One I think might border even further on RAFO - in RoW, Dalinar accepts Kaladin's Fourth Ideal. I'm wondering, is it possible for Dalinar to... power-level a Radiant up to the Fifth Ideal by just accepting all their Oaths without regards to, you know, underlying fitness? Danger and safety issues aside. The Stormfather's comments on Ishar's powers being beyond the scope of what Honor allowed makes me assume he can.
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO, as you expected. But without Honor around, some of the things he could do are kind of up for grabs.
crucix
Probably a RAFO question but why does Syl have an aversion to shard equipment? Is it something inherited from Kaladin's interaction with shardbearers?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. (You'll will find out eventually.)
Questioner
So, at the end of [Oathbringer], a certain Shard says "we killed you." Is "you" Adonalsium there? Or is that a [RAFO]?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a big RAFO!
Mike W
how can you still be RAFO'ing stuff? What is left to read?
Brandon Sanderson
To RJ, RAFO sometimes meant "Read, think about it, and decide." It didn't always mean "I'll give an answer."
Tacticus Prime
Also, what is going on in this chart? Is it all RAFO, or can you hint at anything?
https://www.brandonsanderson.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/twok_endsheet-rear-2-webres.jpg
Brandon Sanderson
That's...I'm sorry, that's a RAFO. But thank you for reading! Answers are coming.
Questioner
Can you tell us why he's called "Death"?
Brandon Sanderson
Because he is seen usually in creepy situations, and looks creepy, and mythology has grown up. Though that one's also a RAFO for the Secret Histories-- that's a real RAFO for the Secret Histories. I might get into that. But you can assume that the allure of... I mean, there's a little more to it. But I mean, let's say you saw him...
Questioner
*laughs* That would be... *inaudible*
Brandon Sanderson
You'd be like, "Ahhhh!" So... But no, I do intend-- there are little things like that, that if I write Secret History 2 I can get into where some of these legends started. So you'll be able to see some of the starts of those and things like that.
Argent
If a lerasium spike is used to steal a trait--
Brandon Sanderson
You're straying way into RAFO territory here.
Argent
Will the recipient of the spike gain anything other than the ability stolen?
Brandon Sanderson
I'm not going anywhere near this one. This one’s a RAFO.
AnubisKronos
If this is all but a guaranteed RAFO question, but, does the fact that the honorblades needing ten heart beats to appear have to do with Szeth's perception on shardblades needing ten heartbeats (like Shallan's case). Or does it have to do with some more innate rule of nature.
Brandon Sanderson
It is a RAFO.
Yata
During the Kholinar's sequence, Kaladin is covered with Shallan's illusions and suddenly the illusion runs off. How that happened ? At first I simply thought he breathed the Stormlight by accident, but that Stormlight had to be keyed to Shallan not him and therefore not elegible for a snack.
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. (But don't read too much into this particular RAFO.)
Jofwu
Are the weird strata patterns in the stone of Urithiru a hallmark of Stoneshaping?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. Stonewarding, but RAFO.
Questioner
I want to know if Kelsier and Hoid will ever get along?
Brandon Sanderson
They, uh-- that's a RAFO, but I wouldn't hold my breath. There are mashing of egos that just don't mesh well going on there.
Questioner
How long will Kelsier's story go?
Brandon Sanderson
Kelsier's story has some more stages to it. I'm gonna RAFO that... But the stuff that's happening right now is set up for a later story with him.
Brandon Sanderson
I will be very liberal with the RAFOs. Just because getting pinned down on things like this-- I always say, I like to answer questions. I like to give you guys the secrets you want to know. But at the same time, I'm a showman. And where I really want it to come out is in the stories. And so there are a lot of things I'm holding.
For those who don't know, RAFO could mean "This is a secret I want to hold for dramatic purposes in the stories." It could mean "I enjoy the fact that the community is discussing this even though the commonly assumed answer is the right answer. I don't want to canonize something 'cause I don't want to kill the looney theories. Because people who love their looney theories really hold on to them tightly for a long time." It could just mean, "You know what, I haven't thought of that," or "I know I wrote it down somewhere, and I don't want to say it right now because I'll contradict myself later."
little wilson
Which eye did Gaz lose?
Brandon Sanderson
Which eye did Gaz lose? Did I go back and forth on that?
little wilson
I have no idea.
Brandon Sanderson
Okay, that's a Peter. I thought it was the left eye but if i did it wrong… It's entirely possible. I have no idea. It's in my notes.
little wilson
How did he lose it?
Brandon Sanderson
Well that is a RAFO! That is definitely a RAFO.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
Can you tell me who the herald is for the Truthwatches.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
RAFO, sorry, good question.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
How about one of the surges?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
I am RAFO'ing the Truthwatchers entirely.
Questioner
At the start of previous Desolations, how long would it take the Fused to get back after one of the Heralds broke?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that for now. I'm gonna be digging into it. We will have some-- I'm just going to RAFO it.
BlackYeti
(paraphrased)
If an Awakener were born deaf, could they Command using sign language?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
RAFO. He initially said yes, but then couldn't remember if he changed it or not, so changed it to RAFO.
Questioner
So, it's not a "why." But how in the world did Vasher get to Roshar. Because I know about Kelsier not being able to really travel too easily outside of his realm, so how did this happen?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, yeah, you're asking, because he's heavily Invested, with Investiture from uh-- yeah. So that's actually a RAFO. I thought you were going to ask a much easier question, this is a much harder question. It's a RAFO that I promise to answer. The books will dig into it, okay?
TheKingOfCarrotFlowers
(paraphrased)
I asked Brandon whether the Heralds were once mortal
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
He RAFO'd me, which I expected, but he explained that the reason he had to RAFO it was because he doesn't want to build anticipation or expectations about the heralds yet, since they won't really be heavily featured until the 2nd set of 5 books.
Kogiopsis
I'm guessing we are going to get RAFO'd on this but is his future-sight a Surge-ability?
Brandon Sanderson
*makes "RAFO" face*
Comatose
Why do rat skulls glow on Threnody?
Brandon Sanderson
*laughs gleefully* RAFO. There's a pretty good reason, but that's a RAFO. We're gonna do a book on Threnody eventually.
blan_Ryan7
loved Way of kings, can you say where shard blades go when not summoned or is it a Rafo
Brandon Sanderson
It is RAFO, but one that will be answered for sure.
Questioner
Glys, Renarin's Spren, is he a Cultivation Spren?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Questioner
Could you say that he is equally bonded to a different entitiy/to a different Shard like Sylphrena is bonded to Honor?
Brandon Sanderson
You're asking... Is his like the windspren?
Questioner
I mean allegion to his aspect.
Brandon Sanderson
Are you still talking about Glys?
Questioner
Yes. Sylphrena is like 100% of Honor. Is Glys like 100% anything?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Questioner
So in Words of Radiance, when Hoid has-- switches places with the carriage driver, who was mentioned as having a hat and a strange accent - is that carriage driver important?
Brandon Sanderson
Hehehehe… That's a-- I'll leave this one to you. It's a RAFO, but it's not a big RAFO.
Blan_Ryan7
Loved Way of Kings; can you say where Shardblades go when not summoned or is it a RAFO?
Brandon Sanderson
It is RAFO, but one that will be answered for sure.
Darkness
(paraphrased)
Is logicspren a type of radiantspren?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
RAFO… but that's a RAFO because that question isn't specific enough, but I'm not going to tell you why.
Questioner
Warbreaker Returned. We know that some of them have been Returned. Has anyone ever been Returned twice?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Questioner
Is it possible?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Ninety
Did Adonalisum leave a Cognitive Shadow? And if so, has Hoid spoken to it?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO; good question. There's an enormous RAFO.
Questioner
How does Odium kill Shards?
Brandon Sanderson
OOOh that's a big ol’ RAFO. It's a RAFO I've promised to answer in the books eventually.
Questioner
We've got a theory… He kills a Shard by destroying the idea of the Shard into a population with hate. So on Sel he replaced the idea of Dominion with hatred of other people…
Brandon Sanderson
That’s a very good theory... I will say-- Yeah.
Luvan
Did Odium have the assistance of another Shard to kill Honor?
Brandon Sanderson
I'm going to have to RAFO that for now, I'm afraid. Too bad it's not in person! I could give you a RAFO card. :)
Ethan
Can Navani leave the Tower and still do Surgebinging? Could someone who bonded the Stormfather before he merged with Honor's Cognitive Shadow do Surgebinging when a highstorm wasn't around?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO! That's a great big ol' RAFO.
Questioner
Could a Feruchemist, by tapping a duralumin metalmind on Sel in Arelon, be able to become an Elantrian? Or would it have to first fill an aluminum metalmind...
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. RAFO.
Questioner
Another “physics” question: We have the Surges of Cohesion and Tension. And I'm really not sure what the difference is in that.
Brandon Sanderson
You'll see when I do this. It's a RAFO. And I play with them anyway a little differently in each order anyway. So what they do... I'll let you figure it out.
Questioner
It's just like when you enhance the tension of a water surface... (..)
Brandon Sanderson
Surface tension is what you're talking about. I'm gonna RAFO. But you're theorizing in correct directions.
Kurkistan
Is it possible to Compound aluminum, or will it all just poof away the second you start trying it?
Brandon Sanderson
I have actually been asked that. And I RAFO'd them, so I'm going to RAFO you.
UndertakerSheep
If I remember correctly, Allomancy is from Preservation, Hemalurgy is from Ruin and Feruchemy is from both Preservation and Ruin.
legobmw99
This is correct. It isn't caused by a shard, but the interaction of two opposing shards
Invisible_Walrus
Would something like that happen between honor and odium?
legobmw99
I just read WoK the other day, I have yet to start in on WoR. That said, my speculation is possibly, but I don't think so. It sounds kind of like Odium isn't from Roshar. Maybe I'm wrong there, but I got that impression. That would mean his form of investiture is somewhere else.
Also, I think that the reason Preservation and Ruin have Feruchemy is also that they worked together to create. There has to be some reason that they interacted while others didn't, and I would guess it is probably their working together
Edit: We could summon [Brandon] but I am almost positive this would get RAFO'd
Brandon Sanderson
...RAFO.
havoc_mayhem
You've once said that there were three sentient species on Yolen: Human, Dragon and [Sho Del]. We've seen a lot of 'people' on the different planets that were either descended from or intentionally based on humans. Frost is known to be a dragon.
Are any of the non-human species we've seen descended from or based on either Dragons or [Sho Del]?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO! :)
havoc_mayhem
What colour is Frost's blood? What color is a [Sho Del]'s blood?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO, more because I'm not ready to canonize Dragonsteel facts yet, as opposed because it will be a huge revelation.
Questioner
I was thinking about the Shardplate in Dalinar's first vision and how it looks different than any other plate now. Would that be like how Syl could only transform after he said that second round... or was it third round of oaths, so is the Shardplate just like the next set, or would that be a totally different set of...?
Brandon Sanderson
I'm totally going to RAFO you. Look you've got a RAFO. You are asking good questions.
yulerule
*Written:* So somewhere it says that the number of Breaths doesn't determine the power of the object. But are the number of Breaths directly tied to how much Investiture is in an object? You're repeatedly said that Nightblood is ridiculously heavily Invested, more so than Shardblades, Honorblades, or the Bands of Mourning. But it only has a thousand Breaths, which doesn't seem all that much from the point of view of the God King--Tenth Heightening, over 50,000.
Brandon Sanderson
So this is a RAFO, but you're starting to ask the right questions there. Okay?
*Writes:* RAFO
Questioner
In terms of character development, I've noticed you you tend to be concentrated on Twinborns and Mistings, in your new series. Are you going to be exploring the full Mistborn?
Brandon Sanderson
Am I going to be exploring full Mistborn in other books. That's kind of a RAFO, which means Read And Find Out. I will-- I am very interested in telling these intimate stories in the Mistborn world right now and Mistborn have kind of fallen out of the world. There aren't many, if any, of them left, but who knows what will happen in the future. So that's what we call a RAFO.
WritesGeekyStuff
1) What is the name for a Tineye/Archivist Twinborn?
2) How would copper compounding work for a double copper Twinborn? Would you relive the memories stored in the burned copperminds extra vividly?
Brandon Sanderson
1) I'm not ready to open the floodgates for giving names to each twinborn combination yet. So RAFO.
2) Another RAFO here. I'll delve into these ideas when/if I do this combination in a book series.
Trae Cooper
In the past we deeply discussed the mechanism with which Breaths are decided to be doled out or endowed on Nalthis. And you said that there is an intellect that is doling them out, but that their intentions or that their goals are difficult to predict or nonstandard. And my question is: are they nonstandard because the base Vessel behind them does not have, at its core, a standard human psychology?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO! Good question. Excellent question. RAFO, I like the way you're theorizing. I have said before, that there are multiple nonhuman Vessels in the Cosmere. So, your theorizing perhaps is going to bear fruit.
Did someone say "chulls"? No, it's not the chulls. There are no chulls that are holding Shards in the Cosmere.
Questioner
Are the Sleepless Invested? And if so, is that in every hordeling or is it like the hive mind is an Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
I will RAFO that. All things are Invested. So-
Questioner
Un-Innate Investiture, like extra...
Brandon Sanderson
Extra? I will RAFO that.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
Hoid was once offered a Shard, but he refused it, right?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
Was it right after the Shattering?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes. It was during the events. I wouldn't necessarily say "right after", it was during this process. I would say this is a RAFO before I finish writing at that time. (Not sure if I understood the last sentence right, but I think that's what he said)
Questioner
(paraphrased)
And who took this Shard instead?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
RAFO.
Questioner 1
So the orb thing in a Secret History, that he breaks?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, mhm.
Questioner 1
How does that work? Like is it-- is Connection a Shard and it has the essence of Connection in it? Or...?
Brandon Sanderson
*sighs* It is more complicated than that.
Questioner 1
Okay.
Questioner 2
<In> email then. *questioners laugh*
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO, without being a RAFO.
Tyetnic
As another note, I think it's cool that the Cognitive Realm on different planets have similarities, but different styles, like the beads on Roshar vs the Mist on Scadrial. I assume all worlds have something related to this. (?)
I'm reading (listening to) Warbreaker currently, and I'm curious as to what the Cognitive Realm on Nalthis looks like. I imagine a neutral gray wasteland to represent nonliving matter (metal/rocks) and glowing clouds of color to represent people--glowing more powerfully if they have more breaths, no color if they are a drab--and less colorful more solid structures for once-living-matter. Similar situation with the whole "water is land, land is whatever the fuck the planet wants".
Brandon Sanderson
You'll eventually figure out what Shadesmar looks like on Nalthis.
elendeldailyplanet
Are there any big plans for the world of Warbreaker beyond the sequel? Or would that be a RAFO (equally exciting)?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO.
Questioner
Worldbringers and Worldsingers, similar mission?
Brandon Sanderson
The similarity of the names is intentional.
Questioner
Similar origin?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
Did Hoid start them?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO. That's a RAFO, but definitely they have a similar origin.
CephandriusTW
We know for previous WoBs that Truthwatchers are worried about knowledge and helping people with it (wob#8500). In the test you recently released, the new info about them says that they are worried about the use of the knowledge and the leaders trying to deceive the people they lead. So, I think they have some things in common with Windrunners and Edgedancers, because the three Orders are more worried about the common people than about the elite. Protecting those who can not protect themselves, remembering those who had been forgotten; both of this Second Ideals refers to the common people, that people that the leaders don't really care about.
Considering all of this, and following the example of the Second Ideal of Windrunners and Edgedancers, which are the most worried about the common people with no epic powers, I wrote a theoric PURE (without corrupted sprens like Glysn) Second Ideal for Truthwatchers:
"I will seek truth, to prevent others from being deceived."
I know you are RAFO'ing this, but I would only like to know if my approach of the Truthwatchers Order is correct.
Brandon Sanderson
[That] is, I'm afraid, a RAFO as I don't want to talk too much about the oaths of given orders until I write books about those orders, as it would constrain the story a little too much. Your theorizing is sound, however.
Lerasium Mistborn
Dalinar had two non-Stormfather visions. First at the end of Words of Radiance, and second with Nohadon in Oathbringer. I'm curious if these two are related or they come from different sources?
Brandon Sanderson
So, by even answering that, this is one of those questions I tend to RAFO because by answering it I'm implying that your postulations are correct, which I am not even willing to do. It's more of a RAFO in that... let's just say I'm not even willing to confirm the postulations.
Jofwu
Continuity question:
Just prior to meeting with the Nightwatcher 5.5 years ago, Dalinar wakes up at the end of a highstorm and seems to have experienced a vision from Stormfather. But in The Way of Kings, Dalinar says that the visions only began "a few months ago." He also seems to have specific memory of the "first" even if he can't recall all of the details, and it seems unlikely he would have visions for several years without anyone having noticed.
So, should we assume that (1) this strange "dream" in Oathbringer was not actually a one of Honor's visions? Is that just a weird dream, or perhaps some OTHER vision from Stormfather?
Or, (2) this is one of Honor's visions and any contradictory details from The Way of Kings are superseded by Oathbringer?
Or, (3) this is one of Honor's visions, and Dalinar just doesn't remember his history of the visions very well.
Brandon Sanderson
So, I did this quite intentionally, it's not number two. But I expected these questions to be asked, and it's a RAFO, but it's one of these RAFOs where I wrote it very deliberately the way I did on purpose, and I'm going to leave it to your speculation as to what it means.
Locke219
I know it's a RAFO, but how the eff did Wyrn see into the future? That seems above even a Shardholder's abilities! I bet that sucker's tapping into the Shadesmar. But I digress...
Brandon Sanderson
Ha, wow, that is indeed a RAFO. Note that we have seen temporal abilities in the cosmere before. Most of the time these are related directly to the pure essence of a Shard or to a Splinter.
Questioner
If you used Hemalurgy to steal Allomancy, Harmony gets some kind of insight into the person that was spiked? He can talk to them? And with enough spikes hear their thoughts?
Brandon Sanderson
Mmhmm. Yes. With enough spikes, take them over.
Questioner
So if you use a spike to say, steal Breath, would Endowment?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that for now. Good question though, I haven't been asked that yet.
Questioner
If you stole Breath, would Harmony still keep the same effect?
Brandon Sanderson
That's why I'm going to give a RAFO.
