I recently got the opportunity to ask you a question about Feruchemical steel and if it was a temporal effect and you told me to define that better. When tapping steel, the mind of the Feruchemist is sped up and physics affects their actions normally. When storing, their mind is not slowed and the effect seems tortuously difficult to amass. Storing generally seems to be the more dangerous/difficult option in Feruchemy, so does [Feruchemical steel] alter a person's personal relationship to the flow of time, with the disconnect between the Physical and Cognitive as a drawback of storing?
Brandon Sanderson
I see what you're asking. The mind-altering effects of [Feruchemical steel] are similar to the slight strength you gain from [Feruchemical iron]--it is your Spiritual nature adapting to the new influx of an attribute that it's not really expecting, and siphoning some of that investiture to make you capable of actually using it. So there is a slight temporal effect here, but nothing as big as I think you're looking for.
Questioner
Secret History was cool, thank you for that. Do you plan to have a series of that?
Brandon Sanderson
If I can squeeze them in.
Questioner
Would they primarily be in the Cognitive Realm like this one?
Brandon Sanderson
Not always, they’d just be behind the scenes stuff happening with characters who are more cosmere aware.
Argent
I thought, like, at one of the signings you told me that when Odium was on Sel and Splintered the Shards there, the reason he did the Cognitive Realm hack was because he was not yet experienced in Splintering stuff.
Brandon Sanderson
Right. He did not want what happened to happen, but he didn't know that he didn't want what happened to happen.
Argent
What I was getting at is, I could never find a recording of you saying "He was not experienced. He didn't want the power to be taken by anyone, and that's the only solution he could figure out." Does that sound like something you would say?
Brandon Sanderson
That is something I would say, yes... There are better ways to do what he wanted to do, which he later did a better job with. But there's not a lot of experimenting he could do.
Argent
Limited number of subjects, right?
Brandon Sanderson
Mmhmm.

At any point, did you contemplate the possibility that Yumi would actually die at the end of the book? Or did you know from the beginning that she would survive?
Brandon Sanderson
I contemplated it. This was a tough one for me, because the more artistic ending and more appropriate to the source material that was an inspiration to me is the ending where she dies. And Yumi’s been a Cognitive Shadow all along.
But why did I make the change? There’s a couple reasons that I decided to go that way. It’s not like I made a change; don’t take it like that. It’s not like I had an outline for one, and I went the other way. The outline always went this way, but there were times when I was building that outline. And there’s a couple reasons.
Number one: this is a gift for my wife. And as a gift for my wife, I want the ending that she will love.
Number two is: we do have this sense in our society that sadness is artistic. And I’ve rejected that notion, that artistry must be sad. You can see it very clearly in what we give awards to. Sad endings can be very artistic; but you know what has a really fantastic happy ending? Lord of the Rings. Granted, there’s some bittersweetness to it, but you know what? Frodo has been through hell. That’s the bittersweet part; he can never really be part of society again. But they all make it. Lord of the Rings wouldn’t be better if the fire just killed Sam and Frodo at the end. You know what? It’s better that they make it. And I’m okay with sometimes being like, “This is the ending that I want.”
And the last reason, one of the best comps for Yumi is obviously Your Name. I mentioned that in the epilogue. I made some very deliberate choices to make Yumi read differently from Your Name. The story I wanted to tell is: what if you had to watch someone else doing your job poorly; and you, kind of as a ghost, had to learn to coach them along. I also wanted these two to be bound together, so that the romance worked as a romance between them. Your Name is really awesome for its ending; it has one of these kind of more uncertain endings. I won’t say it’s happy; I won’t say it’s sad. More uncertain. It’s really appropriate for Your Name, because the two characters didn’t really know each other, ever. They knew each other’s lives and friends and families, but they didn’t actually have a chance to really get to know one another, and the ending to Your Name is a perfect nod to that. It’s a chef’s kiss sort of ending for that specific story, where two people didn’t actually know each other, but knew so much about each other. And I love that aspect of Your Name. I needed a different ending for this, because it is a very different style. It’s two people who actually got to know each other.

The placement of Taldain, the solar system, was it done by someone?
Brandon Sanderson
So...Taldain, yes.
Paleo
Has it to do with the travel in the Cognitive Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
Not 100%. That's a side effect
Questioner
In the Lighthouse, it seems that it's almost like a fabrial, but not quite, because obviously, it's not a spren, obviously. So, is it like the Cognitive equivalent of what that would be?
Brandon Sanderson
So, what specifically are you talking about? Not the light itself, but the thing that Kaladin sees and stuff like that?
Questioner
Yeah.
Brandon Sanderson
No, I wouldn't say that it is. So, I would go a different direction on that.
Questioner
Are there any Cognitive Shades of Mistborn Llamas?
Brandon Sanderson
Hehe-- In the Alcatraz universe, there sure are. 'Cause, I mean, in the Alcatraz universe it is canon, for instance, that Asmodean existed, and it's canon that Spook existed and High Imperial exists. So in the Alcatraz universe all bets are off.
Overlord Jebus
During part 4 of Oathbringer when they are in Shadesmar. At no point did you depict an Everstorm whilst they are in there, and they were in there several weeks. Is there a specific reason you didn't depict that, or does it just not have a presence in the Cognitive Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
There is a specific reason I didn't depict that. It will be involved in a later book, and I was dodging it for "I'm not sure how I'm going to canonize this yet."
Kalinque
Wait, Hoid can't eat meat, despite the fact that he loves bacon? That poor, poor man.
Makes me wonder if this extends to Soulcast meat, though.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, that's usually part of the joke when I mention his love for it.
There's a cognitive aspect to it, though--but whenever he's around food, you'll often note him acting a little oddly.
kaggzz
So does that mean he was extra mean to the Alethi because he had to show up to all their feasts as Wit?
Brandon Sanderson
No, taking on the Wit persona was his choice.
neonmarkov
Is that inability to eat meat and harm people related to the Intent of the Dawnshard he took up? Is he like a Sliver in a way?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO, I'm afraid. But these are the right questions to be asking.

If you cloned someone using real life technology (so not magic) would they have a normal Cognitive and Spiritual make up or be something like a Drab?
Brandon Sanderson
Cloning would most likely work like creating a twin--the body would pull Investiture for a soul, and you probably wouldn't have a drab. Though it would be possible to do it in such a way that you did create one, if you're simply working from our current cloning technology, you'd get a fully invested human being.

Dumb personal-obsession question - mistwraiths are people with "a blockage between the Physical and the Cognitive Realms" - does that mean if they set foot on Threnody they turn into actual undead-type-wraiths?
Brandon Sanderson
This is a very cool theory. I don't think I can shoot it down.
WeiryWriter
Something I've recently been wondering about is how responsive is Sazed to people in the Cognitive Realm flagging him down for a conversation. Let's say Khriss, during one of her trips between Scadrial and Silverlight just shouts "Yo Harmony, do you have time to chat?", how would he respond?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO on this one. :)

Just had a question, when a Returned consumes a Breath, is it a property of their body that does so or the Divine Breath itself? It's been contentious in the community. If it's specifically just their body and a hemalurgist were to spike a Divine Breath as indicated was possible here*, would the hemalurgist not need to consume a weekly breath?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a very interesting question. The thing that requires the Returned to continue gaining investiture is their nature as cognitive shadows--they are dead, and in this case, need a power source to continue persisting in the physical realm. The Divine Breath is part of this. Imagine the Divine Breath as the thing that Infuses their soul, making it persist initially, and then and sticks it to the body. So if you stole it, but you yourself were not in need of being kept alive, I would say that you wouldn't need to be fed a new breath each week to maintain the Divine Breath.

Is the Nightwatcher a spren of Cultivation in a similar way that the Stormfather is to Honor?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
The Nightwatcher is not Cultivation but is related. You're on the right track.

What would a Hemalurgic spike granting atium do for an Allomancer already able to burn atium? Does it function similarly to bronze, granting enhanced atium-ing? Along this line of thought, would enhancing electrum burning via spike be of any advantage?
Brandon Sanderson
A spike of something you have would enhance your ability, giving your more strength. With atium, more strength makes for a minimal edge--the length you can push out the atium shadows. However, there's a certain breaking point where you kind of crack the whole system, peer straight into the [Spiritual Realm], and kind of have a "It's full of stars" moment.
Electrum could reach this same moment, potentially, though there's more interference to fight through. Extra strength in electrum isn't going to be terribly useful up to that point.
Alsadius
Is that what happened when atium was burned with duralumin?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
Obviously the world covers different planets, but most people on all the individual planets don't know about the other planets. Is there a planet within the cosmere where worldhopping is common knowledge?
Brandon Sanderson
Is there a planet in the cosmere where worldhopping is common knowledge. Um… it's not a planet.
Bystander
It's a space station? *laughter* That's no moon!
Brandon Sanderson
That's not as far off as people laughing think that it is. *laughter* It's not a space station, it's not that futuristic, but there is a place in the cosmere where a lot of worldhoppers have settled, is where Iyatil is from, even though her ethnicity is not from there.
Moderator
Clarifying question… Is that place in the Physical Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
*laughs* RAFO!

How could a person from Scadrial access Shadesmar? An alloy of a god metal?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
He RAFOd me on this one and said it was a plot point for future novels.
Questioner
On Sel, it seems like a lot of the magic is tied-in to the location on the planet. Could you take something like Soulforging and do it on another planet, or is it just tied into Sel?
Brandon Sanderson
It is tied into Sel, and there's this distinct reason for that, and it has to do with one of the big differences between the magic there and other places that people haven't picked out of me yet.
Questioner
So is that tied into how you can get Investiture there?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah. It's all tied in. I’ve only made it vaguely - It's not obvious, but I think you could pick it out if you worked at it.

Does the plague on the Purelake has anything to do with the fact that the magic fish form symbiotic bonds with spren?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No, worldhoppers brought a disease to Roshar that they didn't have before. It's the common cold. Rosharans' Investiture makes it so they're usually a healthy bunch so something like the cold is kind of frightening. "It's a plague of the sniffles."
stormfather [Alternate wording from ZenBossanova's report]
(paraphrased)
Another person asked about the plague in the Purelake.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Turns out, that was a pathogen introduced by worldhoppers. People on Roshar normally have greater health than elsewhere in the cosmere because they are more Invested (Stormlight and all that). This plague was what we call… the common cold.

Is Soulcasting blood a valid cure for blood diseases?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Not really, it's super hard to Soulcast people/bodies. You'd have to get it so exact. Their blood. Healthy blood. It's very hard.

The non-cosmere works/series are not related to each other or in the same universe.
Questioner [Alternate wording from stormfather's report]

Are the non-cosmere books related?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No, Earth is just generally non-cosmere, but they're not related.

Have we seen the [Seventeenth Sharders] from the Way of Kings interlude before?
Brandon Sanderson

You have seen two of them, the third is from an unpublished work that will be coming out soon in graphic novel format.

Who are the 3 travelers in [The Way of Kings]?

We've seen 2 of them already.
The third will be in the graphic novels that are coming soon

Will Book 3 [of The Stormlight Archive] be Szeth's book?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
He used to think so. Now it might be Dalinar's. He is going to do the flashbacks for both (and Eshonai) and then decide.
Questioner [Alternate wording from stormfather's report]
(paraphrased)
[The Stormlight Archive] 3 pov character? Some say Szeth others say it's up in the air?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
He said he's not going to canonize it or anything, he's also looking at Dalinar and Eshonai and going to see who's backstory fits the flow of the book best

[Brandon] said in the lecture that he took a programming course in college. He was asked if we will ever see a programming language as a magic system?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
We already have. Reread Elantris.
Questioner [Alternate wording from stormfather's report]
(paraphrased)
He's taken programming classes, and someone wanted to know if he'll apply that knowledge into magic systems.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, see: Elantris.

If the Lord Ruler captured Shai and gave her 100 days to craft a soulstamp that could turn an iron Hemalurgic spike into a steel Hemalurgic spike, could she do it?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, but she would need a boost of power to do it. Affecting an Invested object is hard.
the_archduke [Alternate wording from stormfather's report]
(paraphrased)
Can Shai change Hemalurgic spikes?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, but it costs a lot of power and she wouldn't be able to do it alone.
