Questioner
I was wondering if it is possible to steal Surgebinding with a Hemalurgic spike?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, but if you're stealing it from a Radiant, you're going to be stealing the bond, which the spren has an influence over. So, it's maybe not going to work as well as you might hope.
Phantine
Would giving a Lifeless a pair of Kandra Blessings make it more intelligent? Similarly, could Blessings make a Parshman more parshendi-like?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Questioner
Atium spikes, they can hold a lot. Can they hold multiple different abilities, can they hold Surgebinding and--
Brandon Sanderson
Usually you've gotta use a spike for one thing at a time.
Questioner
I was wondering a little bit about the kandra and they're made by Hemalurgic spikes. I was wondering if their Blessing comes from the effect that the Hemalurgic spike steals?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
Would Inquisitors' kids have Allomancy?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Not usually. It happens sometimes, but not usually. He then mentioned a little about sDNA, but that it's not inherited as much as it is when it's natural.
Kythis
When you spike somebody, say a full Mistborn, with a steel spike, it could end up with four different charges. Does it get all four of them it just depends on where you place it?
Brandon Sanderson
Where you place it it can get all four. Spiking a full Mistborn wastes a lot of power and the way that it's known, I mean, it doesn't have to, but the way that it's known to do it right now.
Wyrmhero
(paraphrased)
Can you Hemalurgically spike a dead thing, similar to how Breath goes into dead things? Could you spike a Lifeless?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, if there was enough of the soul left for the spike to take.
zas678
You've said that Inquisitors could have children. Would those children have a better chance at being Allomancers compared to if they had the kids before they were Inquisitors?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, but there also could be...complications.
leinton
(paraphrased)
Would a person who had enough spikes to have all the Allomantic powers would be considered a Mistborn?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
They probably would be called a Mistborn.
rxience
(paraphrased)
Would a single spike be sufficient to staple a Cognitive Shadow to a mistwraith?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, that could happen.
rxience
(paraphrased)
Did that happen in the past?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
That's a RAFO, I'm afraid. Who are you thinking about?
rxience
(paraphrased)
Kelsier of course!
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Well, he is somehow in the Physical Realm. And he does look like himself, doesn't he?
Aerlion
Is it possible to use Hemalurgic spikes to steal multiple attributes from the same person?
Brandon Sanderson
No. At least, this isn't thought to be possible
theleadingman
Could a hemalurgic spike be used it ways other than just sticking it into a bind point?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
yulerule
Are Inquisitor spikes, kandra Blessings and koloss spikes interchangeable? Like if you it spiked in a different way--
Brandon Sanderson
*Hesitant* You could make that work and it wouldn't be that hard. But just as they are, no.
yulerule
Would nothing happen or would weird stuff happen?
Brandon Sanderson
Weird stuff would happen
*pause*
But that one's not very hard to make work.
Questioner
I was wondering if the size of a piece of metal determines the amount of Feruchemical charge that can be stored in it.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
So how does that scale, like, in terms of the volume or mass of the metal or...
Brandon Sanderson
It-- So I've talked about this before, I'm trying to remember exactly what I've told people-- It does not scale as logically as you think it does. How about that? It's more like certain thresholds. You can have a-- You can store a Hemalurgic or Feruchemical charge even in very small pieces of metal, but larger pieces of metal will let you get more.
Questioner
So it's kind of like there are different classes of sizes?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, kind of like that.
Argent
The Lost Metal Ars Arcanum calls Hemalurgic decay a thing of the past. The term has been used to describe the loss of power in spikes outside of bodies, as well as the small amount of power that is lost at the moment a spike is created. Which one of those things no longer happens?
Brandon Sanderson
The first one, the decay of spikes outside of a body. They have figured out how to make that no longer a thing.
Argent
So it's still a thing that happens in the cosmere, they just know how to avoid that completely?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Argent
In the different worlds, can you spike people Hemalurgically with materials other than metal? Say, you create a wood spike for Breath, or a gem spike for Surges?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
RoboChrist
If you have a Hemalurgic spike made of atium, that grants atium Allomancy, could you use the spike itself as a source of atium to burn?
Brandon Sanderson
Briefly.
Questioner
If you Stamp yourself, to have another, overwritten spiritweb, and you get Spiked-- *laughter* What would happen?
Brandon Sanderson
We actually worked this out. *laughter*
Questioner
Well, you'd die, or very close to it, but would it revert when the Stamp reverts?
Brandon Sanderson
So what’s probably going to happen here is that you’re going to rip off the Investiture you’ve put on your soul, and your own soul will have less damage. Now, the spike is only gonna get the-- the spike, you're like "What will it do?" It will do what you've been overwritten with, but again remember, becoming an Allomancer takes so much energy, and things like-- But it is theoretically possible in the cosmere to rewrite yourself "You're an allomancer", someone spikes you to get this. The Investiture doesn't care that it was fake on you, you have managed to get that Investiture to work. Uhh, this is really tough. And really, like, you need Connection, and you need, like, the right kind of Investiture, but then it rips off and yes you have made a spike that makes you an Allomancer, even though the person was a Forger. So yes, okay? But this is the kind of stuff that is like the thought experiments for physicists in the cosmere as opposed to, y'know--
Questioner
Could one, using a Hemalurgic spike, acquire a Divine Breath from one of the Returned?
Brandon Sanderson
...This should be possible.
Questioner
Will there be a Hero of Ages leatherbound edition?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, it will be this Christmas. Isaac just turned in the Hemalurgic Table artwork. So we shipped it to the publisher last week, so we should have them in time for Christmas. And the Hemalurgic Table, he knocked that one out of the park. We've been waiting a long time to get that one.
Kurkistan
If you spiked out Miles' Feruchemical gold, would he be able to burn his Allomantic reserves [read: Feruchemical reserves using Allomancy] and heal it back?
Brandon Sanderson
If you spiked out his ability to heal gold and somehow left him alive?
Kurkistan
Yeah, but still having Allomancy.
Brandon Sanderson
Still has Allomancy...
Kurkistan
And he’s like in the middle of burning a goldmind.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, that would still work. It'd still have a Spiritual Connection to him.
Kurkistan
So if you're a Coinshot and you get [spiked] to have Feruchemical steel, and then you lose the spike after making a store, you can still Compound that for speed?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes... Yeah, that should still work.
Kurkistan
Was Paalm doing that?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO.
Mason Wheeler
We’re told that anyone pierced by metal is vulnerable to the influence of Ruin and Harmony, but in every case that we actually see it’s not just pierced by metal but an active Hemalurgical spike.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, that is what they mean. So “Anyone pierced by metal can’t be trusted” means “That might be a spike”.
Mason Wheeler
So why does the Path say “everyone wear an earring when you pray” if it’s not...
Brandon Sanderson
It’s tradition. Just in the same reason that you wear a cross when you’re Christian and things like this. Like this has become part of the religion.
Nethseäar
If you were to Hemalurgically give a fallen Elantrian Feruchemic gold, would they be able to store Health?
Brandon Sanderson
A fallen Elantrian store Health-- And you gave them a Hemalurgic spike-- That’s a good question, I would think-- *long pause* You know I think they would not be able to, that’s an excellent question.
Nethseäar
Would it suddenly store up the moment they were restored?
Brandon Sanderson
No, it would not suddenly recover everything. Unless you wanted to channel-- You could do some goofy things but it would kinda ruin their connection to the Dor. But I don’t think it would suddenly-- Y’know. You might be able to do something where you steal it away from them, that could possibly happen. If they were spiked while they were full Elantrian you could probably get more out of them than your average person.
Questioner
Could you spike a hordeling?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Spike means getting something out, spike means get(ting?) something in? I think that both is viable. I think you can, yeah.
Questioner
If you would spike something in, would the whole Aimian get maybe an Allomantic ability?
Brandon Sanderson
Mostly, this would probably change the hordeling. And they may lose contact to it. It could fiddle with the Connection to the point that they can no longer link. That's gonna be my answer right now, that spiking a hordeling would separate it from the group mind.
Questioner
I know savantism isn't transferable but if you were-- If you were to be spiked, would you be able to call it savantism?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Chaos
(paraphrased)
In the future when atium is rare again and we have a good Table of Allomantic Metals, which metal steals Allomantic Temporal powers?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It will be on the table when Brandon brings them out. Feruchemy is the next poster to come out. Until then RAFO.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
To make an Hemalurgic Spike you don't need "external Investiture".
Yata
(paraphrased)
(this answer was about my theory about the need of Ruin's Investiture to create Spikes...but I have to re-listen the question and the actual answer...it was quite confusing.)
Questioner
Can Kandra blessings be any spikes or just the four.
Brandon Sanderson
They were created specifically to do what they do.
Questioner
So you couldn't have a Kandra with, for instance, Allomantic powers?
Brandon Sanderson
I wouldn't go that far, I will say the Kandra spikes are specifically created to do what they do and the Kandra don't know how to make ones that do other things.
Lhyonnaes
(paraphrased)
Alright, thanks. Last question for me tonight - so, when a Hemalurgic spike steals something, then it's storing Investiture in it, yeah? So could you - could you do something with that Investiture? Like... say I'm on Nalthis, and just theoretically, I use a Hemalurgic spike to steal a lot of Breath - can I use that Investiture to Awaken something? Could I Awaken the spike?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
That... you'd need a lot of Investiture to Awaken a spike.
Lhyonnaes
(paraphrased)
Because it's already charged up with something else?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yeah.
Snipexe
Would a primate be turned into a koloss if the spikes were placed in the correct bindpoints?
Brandon Sanderson
Something like a koloss, but you would not call it a koloss.
Snipexe
Would they lose intelligence or gain, if they were?
Brandon Sanderson
You could do it either way.
Czanos
Would anything interesting happen if an Allomancer Burned a Hemalurgic spike, or a Feruchemist Tapped one?
Brandon Sanderson
Er, well, it’s possible. But you’d have to be burning a Hemalurgic spike that killed you and took your power…
Just like you can’t gain anything by burning a metalmind unless you infused it yourself.
tay95
A theme throughout a lot of the Cosmere novels is that form, of one sort or another (patterns, aons, etc.) has a crucial role to play in unlocking or using Investiture.
As a chemist, I'm curious about the role of form in Allomancy and Feruchemy. Does the underlying molecular or crystalline structure of the metal or alloy play a roll? Different processes, doping ratios, and metal mixtures result in different molecular packing, lattices, and ultimately structure. It seems like that kind of very defined, orderly matrix would be right in line with other forms of unlocking Investiture.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes! I've actually mentioned to people before that the chemistry of the various metals acts, for Allomancy, in the same way that the Aons work for AonDor. It's more a key than it is a source of power itself.
Sorana
(paraphrased)
Would a spike charge if I threw it at someone with the intention to spike something out of him and hit the right bindpoint?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes.
Sorana
(paraphrased)
So spike darts are a thing.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, and spike guns are a thing as well.
PhantomMonstrosity
Could you steal any trait Hemalurgically that can be stored Feruchemically?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, you could steal any trait that can be stored.
How much power does a Breath and a freshly charged Hemalurgic spike have relative to each other?
This is a RAFO. I don't want to be pinned down on this one quite yet.
Trae Cooper
(paraphrased)
Why are Invested objects like metalminds and Hemalurgic spikes able to be Pushed and Pulled on, but Shardblades and Shardplate, which are also invested, are not susceptible to Pushing and Pulling?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
There were a few concepts that he outlined in answering this question.
1.) The ability to Push/Pull an Invested object is predicated to the amount/power of the Investiture.
2.) Further, Invested objects also gain resistance to pulling/pushing based on proximity to soul possibly via the soul. An example given is that a Hemalurgic spike touches the blood of the person, and from there is now part of both the Spiritual Realm and the Physical Realm. This provides what Brandon termed a kind of "soul interference," based on its proximity to the soul.
This further explains why Vin required more than normal power to Push/Pull the metalminds from the Lord Ruler, because of their proximity to his soul, via the Spiritual Realm.
3.) The amount of Investiture is relatively low on Scadrial, whereas worlds like Sel and Roshar are pushing around "high power" according to Brandon. I interpreted this to mean that Hemalurgic spikes and metalminds have low amounts of Investiture compared to Shardplate and Shardblades.
Brandon said that theoretically you can Push/Pull Shardblades and Shardplates but you would need to wield an incredible amount of power. One example he gave that could so such as a thing is that if you were a Mistborn wielding the full power of the Well of Ascension, you could Push/Pull Shardblades/Plate.
Questioner
I was wondering if a bond to a spren, a Nahel bond, may be taken with a Hemalurgic spike.
Brandon Sanderson
This is possible but it's gonna-- Since the spren has free will it's going to be-- Yeah it's going to have weird ramifications but it is a possible thing.
mail-mi
Could you spike Elantrian-ness? Like, could you Hemalurgically spike Elantrian-ness?
Brandon Sanderson
Theoretically, yes.
mail-mi
Could you out of a Reod Elantrian? The zombie ones?
Brandon Sanderson
Um, yes you could.
mail-mi
You could?
Brandon Sanderson
So what you would be spiking there is their Connection to...to the planet, first. That's gonna be the big important thing. So you're going to overwrite your Connection. Um, and then you're going to....it's going to be a complicated process because you're going to have to spike the actual ability to have been transformed, that's gonna be harder.
mail-mi
Okay.
Brandon Sanderson
Does that make sense?
mail-mi
Yeah, so it's gonna take two spikes.
Brandon Sanderson
It's gonna take two spikes.
mail-mi
Alright.
Brandon Sanderson
And you gonna have to get the right Connection to the right place. Let's say you spike somebody from MaiPon, and then you spike an Elantrian, you're not going to be able to use it, you're not connected to the right area.
Silasary
Is there a difference between spikes from someone who is say, an eight year old and someone who is in their forties?
Brandon Sanderson
I've never been asked this before. My instinctual answer is no, but that's not written in the notes, that's just how I would answer right now.
Questioner
Could Nightblood theoretically be turned into a Hemalurgic spike?
Brandon Sanderson
The problem with that is that Nightblood is already invested, so it depends on your version of ' Hemalurgic spikes'. Piercing someone's body with Invested metal can have weird effects all through the Cosmere, but ripping off a piece of a person's soul using an un-Invested spike to Invest it and create one is different... we're talking about two different things, right. So there's the.... so what is a Hemalurgic spike? For instance if you've got a spike that's Invested and you stick it into a Kandra on Scadrial it will still work as an Invested Hemalurgic spike. Making a new Invested spike by ripping off a person's soul, that's a different process and a little more difficult to accomplish and requires some specialized knowledge.
Questioner
Has a Hemalurgic Feruchemist ever used a Hemalurgic spike to tap power into it? Have they ever done that yet?
Brandon Sanderson
So a Hemalurgic spike is already Invested, so it's going to resist sticking anything else in it, particularly a magic like that.
Questioner
So if there's a pewter spike then a Feruchemist couldn't store strength in it?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah. It would be difficult.
Questioner
If someone had a Hemalurgic spike and they burned aluminum, would the negation of-- am I going to get RAFO'd?
Brandon Sanderson
You're asking if it would destroy the Hemalurgic power? Burning aluminum at that point would not destroy the Hemalurgic power. It would pull the Investiture through whatever you're doing. It would blank your power, but it wouldn't destroy you being an Allomancer with the spike...
I actually considered this in building it and that would be too easy a way to remove Inquisitors, particularly if there were dissension between them.
yulerule
Have all the spikes been collected? You have a bunch of dead Inquisitors, you've got the koloss at the end of Mistborn.
Brandon Sanderson
Have they all been collected?
yulerule
Or are they just lying around, or did they--
Brandon Sanderson
There are some that have been lost.
Dairetron
If a Hemalurgic spike loses its charge, does that mean the remaining part of the person's soul trapped will move on to the Beyond?
Brandon Sanderson
Yep.
Miss_Silver
Is there a maximum number of spikes a person can have? Would having more spikes eventually cause issues, be it mental or physical limitations?
Also do the benefits from spikes have some form of diminishing returns, or could some one have like, 200 bronze spikes and be able to sense a person burning metal through copper from 50 miles away?
Brandon Sanderson
1) Yes, it would cause big issues.
2) #1 interferes greatly with what you would like to do here, but there are other ways of magnifying the powers to the extent you postulate.
Kurkistan
When you a get a Hemalurgic spike, if you just immediately... tap gold, do you lose the spike, or is the spike already in there and can't get out?
Brandon Sanderson
Okay: so hemalurgic spike, tap gold? RAFO.
Brandon Sanderson
*reading a personalization request* Could a Rosharan be--
Melissa
Hemalurgically spiked with a gem or fabrial?
Brandon Sanderson
*presumably writes RAFO in book*
Questioner
*exasperated "ugh" sound*
Ben McSweeney
Haha.
Dragon13
Are the Hemalurgic constructs in Shadows of Self as twisted as they are because... something was spiked out of them?
Brandon Sanderson
Okay the Hemalurgic...
Dragon13
Or something spiked into them?
Brandon Sanderson
We're talking about who?
Dragon13
The Hemalurgic constructs in the catacombs.
Brandon Sanderson
There's something spiked into them.
Dragon13
Is there anything spiked out of them? Making them more feral?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO, but-- Let's just say this it's a RAFO with the star of "Nobody knows how spike someone without killing them right now." So it's a "Most likely, just spikes in."
Snipexe
Could you spike the ability to grow a gemheart out of a singer?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, I think you could. Yeah.
Questioner
Supposing that a skilled Hemalurgist got hold of some a Shardblade or some Shardplate, how would he best use it assuming that the best way isn't to put it on and kill people with it.
Brandon Sanderson
That's probably the best way, to put it on and kill people with it. I'm not sure why a Hemalurgist would want one more than anyone else would because the metal is already Invested which means its not useful to him.
Questioner
So there is no way that he could use a Hemalurgic spike to take some power from the Spren that's crafting it.
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, that's what you're saying. You want to grab something off the Spren? That's gonna be way harder than grabbing one that's not already made into something. So I don't see why he would want the Blade, just go grab it from them. Even then its going to be worse then, probably in most cases, a person. Maybe its possible that spiking yourself with a Spren would be valid, but you don't want to take it out of the Shardblade. That's gonna be harder, but you would probably have to go to the Cognitive either way to make it work, so yeah.
