Who had custody of Nightblood before Nale?
Read and Find Out.
Which universe is [Skyward]?
It IS connected to something else Brandon has written. You'll figure it out when you read it.
Is it possible for spren to move from one planet to another?
It is possible for them to get to other planets. They are tied to certain realms… A lot of them reside in the cognitive realm and are pulled into the physical by their bonds--
Would they bring the same magics?
That you will have to wait and see.
Are the Heralds Rosharan?
Well, you will have to Read And Find Out on that one. Good question.
"Most important words" that Dalinar had to say, were they the Words of Radiance?
You're gonna have to Read And Find Out. That one's not answered yet.
Also, what did Lift get? If she didn't stop aging, what did she get? Read and find out?
Read and find out. It involves the way that she's getting Stormlight.
Would Rock be able to see the Cryptics?
Would Rock be able to see a Cryptic? That is a good question, you will have to see.
So, Shardblades, they're dead spren, but Syl came back. Is there any way for Shardblades, the spren who are Shardblades, to come back?
Mmm... You'll have to read and find out.
Someone else asked if Adonalsium had been self-aware.
Brandon said he couldn't answer that yet.
I saw a quote that said that there were two people who knew how to awaken metal. Is that still true?
Read and find out.
Calamity, it is just, because it talks about it always being in the sky. Is it hovering above North America or is that a global thing?
You will find out in the next book.
If an Awakener imbued Stick with Biochromatic Breath, would it say something other than I am a stick? Would it matter if it was passively stored or given a Command?
I'm going to stay away from questions like this, as the mechanics of Shadesmar is one of those things I'm planning to roll out slowly over the next few books. Ask me again sometime around Stormlight six.
What exactly is needed to make a motivator? In Firefight they operated on Oblivion to build the bomb, yet people still trade with any amount of Epic cells. Does the amount simply relate to power or is there something else?
This is covered in detail in book three. I've been pretty sneaky about some of this setup, on purpose.
So, if someone went to Shadesmar on Scadrial would the whole ground-water inversion, is that a Cosmere wide thing?
That you will have to read and find out about. I will say that there are places in Shadesmar that are different and there are places that are the same as what you see on Roshar.
I've got a more hypothethical question.
Iron stores weight. Pewter stores strength.
What if you both make yourself very light and very strong***? Maybe even throw in burning pewter as well; how does it all work together?
Maybe I should throw this over to askscience..
I have some ideas, and have done some research, but I'm not ready to comment on this yet. I plan to use it in a future book.
But if you do come up with some info from askscience, I'd love to see it.
If Shardblades were spren, then what is Shardplate?
Good question. It's a great question.
And you're not going to say are you?
I'm not going to answer you.
So are there Four Dawnshards that each split into four more Dawnshards? Or just four? Are there 16 Shards and 16 Dawnshards?
This is intentionally vague, I'm afraid. (Sorry.)
Chalklings, we know, can catch rides off of Nebrask. If Melody had chalklings on a slate and carried them around, could she give them verbal commands later, after she had made them?
You will have to find out how her magic works as we progress. Everyone would say "No, that's not possible" but she had done things that are supposedly-- that seem impossible. So what you are proposing is probably likely, probably possible, but it depends on her magic.
In Bands of Mourning, was that Jasnah?
No it wasn’t, good question.
Are they in the same time period?
So, Alloy Era book are happening after Stormlight 5. But not nece--I haven’t said exactly how far off.
What are the Deepest Ones? ...The quote is "God Beyond protect them if the fighting had drawn one of the Deepest Ones" from Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell.
You will find out if I ever write the next book... the next book set on Threnody.
Is something wrong with Roshar's afterlife?
Uh, why do you ask?
Because of the Tranquiline Halls stuff? Needing to reclaim them?
Um. So, I'm... not going to answer anything about Roshar's afterlife.
Is Dalinar's wife really dead?
Is Dalinar's wife what?
Really dead.
Is Dalinar's wife really dead? That is a Read And Find Out, and you will discover it in the third book.
About Bands of Mourning... Marasi finds ReLuur's missing spike, and she describes it as pewter... Which is not one of the four metals conventionally used in kandra blessings...
Yes.
...and is used to steal Feruchemical abilities. Was Marasi just mistaken, or is something going on there.
That you will eventually find out.
Is the Old Magic a Shard?
Is the Old Magic a Shard? That's a Read And Find Out.
The unknown spike, raysium?
I’m not going to tell you. Good question.
I have a specific question about one Perpendicularity, on First of the Sun. You've mentioned that it's dangerous.
Yes.
Is that because there are predators that can sense your thoughts, that can sense your presence in the Cognitive Realm as you're travelling across the Perpendicularity before you cross over--
That's a Read And Find Out.
Who is Kelsier's noble dad?
Kelsier's dad is a secret.
How can everyone tap nicrosil without being a nicrosil Ferring? Is that a Read And Find Out?
That's kind of a Read And Find Out.
I assume the next book, probably?
We'll dig into that.
Adonalsium was 'killed' and split by the 16 who would eventually become shards, so that means there was an original holder of the power, and could their name have been Adonal?
This is a good question...that will be covered in the Dragonsteel series, when I get to it. (Sorry.)
Why do they ride horses, and not like fast insects of some sort?
That is an excellent question. That I'm not going to answer.
Could a bloodmaker heal a Shardblade wound?
Could a...whatmaker? Oh, could a bloodmaker heal a Shardblade wound? Um, yes, yes they could. So, what...so, yes, this is possible. (Long pause) Is it possible? I haven't actually thought about it. I have to work through the mechanics of the magics. Jury's out. Jury's out. I've gotta go and look at the actual mechanics, so I'm gonna "jury's out" on that one. That's a read and find out as, you would think I'd figured that one out, because I'm planning for the conflicts but I haven't, like... So what's happening with the healing on Roshar is that they are using Stormlight to bridge the severed soul and glue it back together, right. So, the magic of bloodmaking is different to an extent, in that it is prompting healing directly from the body, right... I'm gonna go with yes, until I look at it but, jury's out.
The Oathgate fabrial has an opening for a living Shardblade to make it functionable. Does this mean the opening is made from a spren?
You will find more about this in a future book.
Do you plan on having any more mistborns in the Wax & Wayne series?
Read and Find Out.
Does Mongrel know why Spensa's dad broke formation? Will we get a viewpoint of that battle, even just in retelling from Mongrel or someone else?
What happened during the battle is a major plot point, and you'll eventually get a chance to see it for yourself.
What drove Jezrien mad?
You will see firsthand in the series.
Can you tell us something about the Order of Willshapers that hasn't been mentioned?
No, I can't. Because, too many spoilers, in that sort of area. And plus, I don't want to lock down some of the things that... because I'm not sure how I'll represent them yet in books. I know what I'll probably do, but I have... there's certain things about it that, until I write a scene from someone's eyes, using the magic, that then is kind of when it locks down for me. So, we will stay away from that.
Is Hoid using the Lerasium as a metalmind.
That's a read and find out, but I'll give you a card!
Can you please explain what RAFO means?
RAFO, yes! For those you don't know, I inherited from Robert Jordan a phrase that he used with fans when they asked a question that he didn't want to answer. It means read and find out. He would not answer for a multitude of reasons. Sometimes it's too much a spoiler. Sometimes he... Well, I'll just answer for myself, since I am not Robert Jordan. Sometimes I don't want to answer because it's too much a spoiler. That's probably the number one reason, is I am planning perhaps—not a promise but perhaps—to address this in the books. Sometimes I don't answer because I don't want to canonize this yet. Sometimes I don't answer because I like the fandom theorizing along a direction because it acts as a nice red herring for what I'm actually planning to do. I will do all of these things, and sometimes it will just be I don't feel like answering that right now.
When I picked up the Wheel of Time and I went to Harriet and Robert Jordans' house for the first time in December of 2007, she handed me some things. One was of course the big pile of the ending of the Wheel of Time. This is what Robert Jordan had written plus all of his notes for the last book—which was about 200 pages worth of material. Then she also gave me a couple of things. One was one of his pens, which I signed most books on when I was on tour for those books was the pen that she had given me, obviously with ink cartridges that we refilled frequently, but one of his pens—his favorite kind of pen. Then she also handed me a little charm bracelet that said RAFO that a fan had given to Robert Jordan, and she said, "This is yours now," kind of bequeathing the RAFO to me.
Which is kind of funny, that it was bequeathed to me as a physical object, almost. Basically, the ability to be in control of how much information was displayed and basically this was her saying, "The fandom—it's your job now kid to deal with this." I still have the RAFO charm bracelet, my bequeathed RAFO. I started using it judiciously when fans would ask questions and it just started to become a thing that I did with my own fandom as well because it's a very useful tool.
So there you are. I'll have to put that in a shrine and bequeath it to someone else before I pass away and be like, "THE RAFO IS YOURS NOW!"
What's the population of the shardworld's we've seen so far (even in very general terms, like one's much bigger than the others or something)?
Scadrial is certainly the least populated of the major shard worlds. Then Nalthis, I'd guess, followed by Roshar, and finally Sel--which likely has the largest population. I would have to look closely to see which is bigger between those last two.
Does a population of about 100 million during The Final Empire (with 1-2 million in Luthadel), and around 15 million during Alloy of Law (with about 5 million in Elendel) seem right?
Have to RAFO this for now, for reasons I can't explain without giving spoilers.
How about as far as Elend/Wax knows, at the beginning of their respective series?
Then those numbers, if they're off, are at least close.
Interesting that Sel has such a large population, given that the actual numbers of soldiers shown seem to be quite small.
Let's just say that Opelon has an inflated opinion of its own size in relation to the rest of the world.
So, the Shardplate, are those also spren or <specific> spren?
It's a RAFO!
It seems there is a special interaction between silver and Investiture, in at least certain places in the Cosmere. We've seen how silver interacts with aethers, and we've seen over on Threnody. So that makes silver the second really really special metal to interact with investiture. Is the plan now to have aluminum block investiture, and silver destroy investiture?
Yeah, that's the way I'm going with it. To make a distinction between them, that's where we're going.
But silver is still non-Allomantic. No silvereyes.
No, non-Allomantic, yup. No silvereyes. This is my nod towards silvereye-ness, and yeah, there we go.
So would [silver] be effective against spren, just like [anti-Investiture]?
Well, you'll have to find out. RAFO!
What is your favorite question that you had to RAFO at the time that has since been answered? Which current RAFO are you most excited for readers to find in the future?
I can tell you that RAFO-ing about Secret Projects and things and then eventually knowing I was gonna reveal these to everyone was a lot of fun. RAFO-ing, I have to be careful; I don't know if they're official RAFOs. 'Cause usually, when I put out teases about these, I didn't even tease these ones; I was teasing other secret projects, Kingmaker or the as-of-yet-not-announced/revealed 200,000 word secret project that I will someday maybe write. But knowing that I would be able to tell you guys eventually about this was really fun.
And, of course, there have been a whole lot of RAFOs around Stormlight Five's ending, and I am in the thick of working on that now, and it's very fun to imagine you all getting some of these things.
Since it seems like the sibling is more "dead" than sleeping, is the event that caused this to occur from a certain Bondsmith breaking Odium's surges from the Parsh?
RAFO!
Is it more of a 4/5 RAFO, or a 6-10 RAFO?
4/5 RAFO, I'd say.
So the white hair. Did she have white hair or did Shallan just imagine that she had white hair?
That is another RAFO.
There are a lot of RAFO's about The Girl Who Looked Up.
There are a lot of RAFO's.
So, the girl who looked up, could her hair change like the royal locks?
RAFO.
Was her hair long or short? Or does it not matter?
It is long.
Many of my questions have to do with the Dalinar-Adolin relationship because I love families and I find this particular relationship very strained. I wish to know stuff like what Dalinar really feels for Adolin, as I find he treats him more like a tool than a son. Or whether or not we've seen the end of the Adolin murdered Sadeas narrative arc, as no character really had the time to react to it yet.
You have not seen the end of that arc. Dalinar loves his son but has trouble treating anyone as anything other than tools.
What are Brandon's thoughts on the relationship? I'd also die to hear Brandon speak about what to expect for Adolin within book 4 in terms of length, scope—
RAFO! RAFO!
—as I just wished to give Brandon comment on the fact that some readers were disappointed with the outcome of this narrative arc.
RAFO, RAFO.
I have a question about emotional Allomancy and ways it can affect things that aren't from Scadrial. Specifically, I had a conversation about what it would do to Lifeless.
Emotional Allomancy would have a more compelling effect on Lifeless than on a regular person.
Like breaking Lifeless with Allomancy?
Oh... to break Lifeless. This... I'll RAFO that for now, just because the actual details there I'm gonna RAFO. So, you're really asking, "Can emotional Allomancy bring back the person behind the Lifeless," and that I'll have to RAFO.
I meant like breaking the Command.
Oh, breaking the command of a Lifeless. Ohhhh... I'll still RAFO that. *laughter and applause from audience* That's not nearly as difficult a question, but yeah... I would say if you're doing that in a roleplaying game, I would call that a viable use of the magic as currently understood. So you could make that happen and have my authority to do it.
Is Aona's Shard name Devotion?
RAFO, but that's more of a "Email that question to me" because I would have to look at my computer to see which term I settled on, but you're basically there. I think it actually may be Devotion. So I'll have to look. It may be a synonym.
Is Skai Unity?
Um, RAFO.
Passion?
What? RAFO. I'm not going to tell you. You already kind of pulled out of me what Aona was.
Does Lift's metabolic waste include crem?
*laughs* ...That's an excellent question. I'm not going to-- I'm not going to answer that one but it's an excellent question.
Wow, you're RAFO'ing that? I was at least expecting a laugh
I'm RAFO'ing y-- You got a laugh. I didn't say RAFO, I said I'm not going to answer that, which can be considered two different answers.
Is "Trell" Odium?
That's a RAFO. I'm sorry. The cheeky thing for me to respond would be, "Which Trell," but the answer is just it's a RAFO.
Which Trell, huh?
Yeah. The name Trell has shown up multiple times in the Cosmere. But the Trell specifically you're asking about is the one who is invading Scadrial during the second Era.
Is that the same one in Era 1?
So that's a RAFO also but there's also a Trell mentioned on Taldain so the name has shown up multiple times.
If a Mistborn or Misting is Returned, do they retain their Allomantic powers?
RAFO!
Theoretically then, can Kelsier come back to Physical Realm as a Returned?
RAFO. Double RAFO!
