Mason Wheeler
It seems that taking something metal that is Invested and melting it down, and reforging it, does not destroy the Investiture in it. For example the spike that got turned into a bullet.
Brandon Sanderson
Well, and the-- yeah. There are other examples as well.
Mason Wheeler
If that doesn't ruin its Invested nature, what would happen if Wax were to take one of his ironminds, have that melted and alloyed into steel, and then tried to burn it?
Brandon Sanderson
So you are saying mixing in-- right. Um, this would probably not work. But I'd have to go to the document on this one, because I've theorized in it. So I'm going to say probably won't work, but I have to go to my document, so Notes And Find Out. As soon as we get into the really detailed-- One of the things I want, even when I was building the Mistborn magics, is I wanted it to get really complicated. Because, my philosophy was making a wheel is easy to understand what's going on. Making a car uses all the same physics and simple tools, but is infinitely--well, you know, not infinitely--hugely more complex. Making a spaceship goes beyond that. And I wanted when we dug into all the actual mechanics it all works, but it's like the difference between making an abacus and making a computer. And we're starting to stray-- not into computer-making realms, but starting to stray into combustion-making realms, and so these are the sort of things that I just can't talk about off the cuff as easily. Because I have this document and I'm like "this, this, this, this." Does that makes sense?
So I'm going to say that probably wouldn't work. I believe what is going to happen there is you're probably going to end up with one of these things where you see a reservoir there but you can't access it that happens quite a bit when things get muddled once you mix in other metals and things like that. But I can't give you 100% on that without the notes to double check myself.
1) What benefit does Compounding copper get? Exceptionally clear and detailed memories? Memories that can be split into a new coppermind while still remaining in the Feruchemist's mind? Something else?
2) How does Feruchemical luck work? If a chromium Compounder tried his hand at day trading on the stock market, what would happen? Would it make him choose stocks that were coincidentally going to go up anyway? Would it change stock prices by altering the world around him? Would it fail because the required scale of action is too large? Something else?
So, I've said before that I want to hold off on talking about different forms of compounding and types of twinborn until I can address them in the series. So I'll have to RAFO the first two.
Dirigible
(paraphrased)
If you were on Roshar, and tapped Connection, would you be unable to use Scadrial magic?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No, but that's a good question. You would not be able to use Selish magic though, because that is dependent on location.
Argent
Can tapping enough Feruchemical zinc allow one to match Taravangian's intellect on the day he created the Diagram? Or are the effects different somehow?
Brandon Sanderson
The effects are similar, but not exactly the same. Zinc is speed of thought specifically--while what happens to Taravangian increases multiple types of intelligence, not just raw 'processing power' so to speak.
AltF4WillHelp
Sorry if this has been asked before; I haven't been able to find a direct answer anywhere. It came up while playing the Mistborn Adventure Game (which has been very fun, btw!).
A Feruchemist can easily determine whether any metal is a metalmind, regardless of whether it's theirs, simply by touching it. And a Ferring can definitely determine the same, but for their own metal.
But, a question came up: can a Ferring also—perhaps with practice—tell whether any piece of metal has been stored in/is a metalmind? Would this be easier for certain kinds of Ferrings? (Ones that are more directly in tune with Investiture, perhaps?) And, if they can determine that a piece of metal is Invested, would they feel something similar to what Vin did when she was examining Sazed's metalmind? Would they be able to tell what the metal it is based on how that power feels? (That last bit might be infringing on what skilled/savant bronze Mistings might be able to do).
Brandon Sanderson
So, bronze Mistings are really good at reading investiture that is being used--it's harder to simply "detect investiture" as all things are made out of investiture in the cosmere. That said, I could see your game allowing this, as it's a natural extrapolation of the magic--and it could make for some good gameplay. Don't be afraid to extrapolate the magic for your own uses, even if it doesn't fall right in line with the way I do things.
Questioner
If someone were to create a human shape, with full articulations, made out of the four Feruchemical Spiritual metals and copper and do like a full dump into them, would it be able to-- I mean, Investiture attains sapience on its own. And then with-- If those were mixed with the memories in the copper would it be able to effectively become an android of the person who created it?
Brandon Sanderson
So we got a couple of issues you have to overcome in creating this. Number one, the memories are not going to attune to the Investiture itself, they're going to be attuned to you. The Investiture as it attains sapience is gonna create its own Identity, which is then going to be a mismatch for those memories. So you would have to find a way to get those memories to work for that creation.
Questioner
It wouldn't tie with the Identity that was stored in the aluminum?
Brandon Sanderson
No, it would not... The other thing you were getting at there though, is that just Investing it alone, you would have to leave it alone for a long time, naturally, for it to start developing anything. And so we're looking at thousands of years, probably. There are ways to speed that process along, but just doing that and leaving it, it's gonna take a while.

Does a Connection medallion account for heavy sarcasm?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It would. Maybe not the heaviest, most deadpan sarcasm.

Does the loss during the withdrawal of large amounts of attribute depend on the rate of original storage?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No.

And finally, whether a duralumin compounder could break into a kandra?
Brandon Sanderson
Um... yes, possible, yeah.
XMikethetrikeX
A question regaurding Feruchemical iron:
So, while Sazed was guarding one of the gates to Luthadel, he tapped weight to compensate, he had to tap pewter as well. Also, when he was climbing a tree, his strength to weght ratio rised, making it easier for him to climb it. Wax doesn't have to do this- when fighting Miles on the train, he's fine without any sort of muscular enhancement, and when he is climbing in the sets base, he notes that he does not make himself lighter because it would simply decrease his weight and strength equally (in contrast to Sazed climbing the tree).
So, is this difference for the same reason people can push/ pull on atium, being the you hadn't fully developed your idea for the cosmere yet? Or is it some other reason?
Brandon Sanderson
Hmm. I think the mistake is more on me writing the Wax scene than in the original. (For him climbing, specifically.) I'll put Peter on this and see if it's a continuity error we want to fix.
Czanos
If a Feruchemist Taps warmth, does it actually warm them up physically, or do they just feel warmer?
Brandon Sanderson
It actually warms them. It’s not just a feeling.
Questioner
Is it possible to Compound your Spiritual Connection to a location on a planet while storing your Spiritual Connection to all other locations on the planet to kind of pull yourself through the Spiritual Realm to that location?
Brandon Sanderson
That's not how that would work. Parts of what you say are possible, but the teleportation aspect wouldn't actually do anything.
Questioner
Was Hoid trying to Compound his Spiritual location in the scene you added in the 10th Anniversary [Elantris]? Was he trying to Compound Connection to that location to try to become Elantrian?
Brandon Sanderson
...So at that point chronologically he was not an Allomancer.

Do Gasper Ferrings and Surgebinders holding their breath use similar mechanisms to hold their breath?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It's not the same, but it is similar.

Can Regrowth do-- accomplish more for healing than Feruchemical gold can?
Brandon Sanderson
*Pause* I haven't decided yet.
Paleo
Somebody also theorized along the lines that a nicrosilmind is a lot like an Honorblade in that you just have, or they said, do you only have to touch it in order for it to work, or do you actually have to tap it?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh... I'll RAFO that.
Alteroden
With [Feruchemical] zinc, you get mental speed. How is that any different from [Feruchemical] steel, except without [physical] speed?
Brandon Sanderson
I think of the mental speed actually turning you into... Let's say you sped up your body, and you wanted to figure out some really complex equations.
Alteroden
So it lets you have intuitive leaps.
Brandon Sanderson
Right. It basically turns you into Ken Jennings. That's how I imagine it.
Kurkistan
So it's not like bullet time?
Brandon Sanderson
No... It'll bullet time a little bit, it certainly will, because you're thinking faster than everyone else, but it has applications beyond bullet timing. Bullet time is really--
Kurkistan
That’s steel’s thing?
Brandon Sanderson
That’s kind of steel's thing. They kind of overlap on that one, because the steel thing... But yeah. It's more like "I think fast, but my reaction speed is not sped up".
Is there any use to being a copper Compounder, from a Feruchemical point of view? I think the same point would also apply to an aluminum Compounder.
Some combinations, like some abilities themselves, aren't really that useful. That said, being able to Compound copper...that could do some things. Aluminum, not so much.
Questioner
Would you be able to use dental fillings as mini-metalminds?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, you totally could.
clyguy
If Wax were to go to Roshar, and--he's a Skimmer, right? So he can change his weight--if he got Lashed in a different direction if he Stored his weight would that nullify some of the Lashing?
Brandon Sanderson
Okay, you're going to make me think through this. *laughter* So Wax actually changes mass. And the Lashing only affects gravitational pull. So the answer is no because different things with different masses fall at the same speed.
Nasa1225
Theoretically, what would happen if one were to compound chromium?
Brandon Sanderson
As expected, this one is a RAFO.

Does Hoid use his Feruchemical abilities with the atium to see the future?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Ah ah ah, I haven't confirmed that Hoid had Feruchemical abilities.
Skaiiwalker
(paraphrased)
You haven't?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
*grinning slyly* No, but most people think he has Allomancy.
Questioner
I remember in, I believe it was Hero of the Ages, when Sazed was helping TenSoon escape. When he had fallen on the guard, he said that, by increasing his weight he also increases his density so he doesn't <hurt> himself. Then in The Alloy of Law, it also says that when Wax increases his weight he said that he didn't.
Brandon Sanderson
So, Sazed is just making a mistake. He's mistaking the fact when he increases his weight his musculature changes to be able to handle the new weight and that was what he was talking about. Strength and muscle tone and things like that. I might have just gotten it wrong in the original one [scene], I can't honestly remember, but this is what we kinda decided it needs to be.
Questioner
And how does Copper compounding work? Memories can't really get (indistinct...)
Brandon Sanderson
Let's just say that some sorts of compounding are more effective than others.
Questioner
Who was the first Feruchemist?
Brandon Sanderson
Who was the first Feruchemist? I don't have their name written down. It's fairly ancient of date.
Questioner
Were they born or were they created?
Brandon Sanderson
The first Feruchemist, were they born or created? Both. I don't see those two as mutually exclusive. See how good I am at dodging questions, now? I've been dealing with the Wheel of Time fans long enough. They've really whipped me into shape for dodging questions.
Questioner
I was wondering if the size of a piece of metal determines the amount of Feruchemical charge that can be stored in it.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
So how does that scale, like, in terms of the volume or mass of the metal or...
Brandon Sanderson
It-- So I've talked about this before, I'm trying to remember exactly what I've told people-- It does not scale as logically as you think it does. How about that? It's more like certain thresholds. You can have a-- You can store a Hemalurgic or Feruchemical charge even in very small pieces of metal, but larger pieces of metal will let you get more.
Questioner
So it's kind of like there are different classes of sizes?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, kind of like that.
kanuut
Why don't Feruchemists wear small metalminds like rings, toe-rings, earrings (Lot of rings it seems), as backups.
Brandon Sanderson
Most Feruchemists do just what you say. Look at the Lord Ruler and Sazed. Both have tons.
In the new era books, you have two Feruchemstis where it doesn't make sense. Wayne's healing stores are very difficult to build, and take a lot of time. He generally burns through them quickly, though sometimes mentions he's got a little stored away. Being Wayne, though, he tends to use these up and push himself right to the edge of running out.
Wax is somewhat similar. He can use iron, a very common metal, to store and make a metalmind. He's generally storing weight everywhere he goes, a little, as the books point out. He's got many metalminds, but he's not as possessive of them, as filling his metalmind is as much of a power as tapping it.
So...I'm not sure what gave you the impression that they don't have lots of metalminds. Also, keep in mind that in your example of someone getting knocked out, they're going to get searched well enough to find a toe ring. Generally, as Wayne has pointed out in the books, sticking a coin or something in your mouth is the preferred way to hide something.
DoritoJH
So, AonDor is super versatile and powerful.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, but region-locked!
DoritoJH
Yes, it is region locked, exactly. If a full Feruchemist using nicrosil were to create an unlocked medallion that allowed an Elantrian to store Connection to Elantris' location, would it let them use AonDor at full power as long as they were tapping that Connection?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. That should work just fine.
...
Just understand that the medallion's going to have to be usable by everyone in order to work. You're going to have to jump through some hoops, but I think what you want there would work. And for those of you listening, that would be the harder way to unlock AonDor. There are easier methods.
Doc_John
Hey, you've mentioned before that for the Lord Ruler to be able to be a Mistborn and a Feruchemist he had to alter his spiritweb in some way because a person can't normally hold all 32 powers. What about a Mistborn Ferring? Would it be possible for someone born with all 16 powers of Allomancy to also be born with a Ferring power? What about a Ferring Misting? Thanks
Brandon Sanderson
This is possible now, when it once wasn't, but would be very unlikely.
Doc_John
Just as getting a Mistborn nowadays is very unlikely but that hasn't stopped people from trying ;) ;)
Follow up, having past a certain number of medallions doesn't work currently in world. Is this because of this same issue? Or is it more of a technical hurdle with the medallion?
Brandon Sanderson
The core root is the same issue, but it's not insurmountable with technological improvements.
Doniac
A nicrosil Feruchemist can store Investiture, could they potentially create something like a Shardblade?
Brandon Sanderson
All questions about storing Investiture are RAFOs for the foreseeable future. (Sorry.)
wiresegal
In post-medallion-tech Scadrial, (i.e. Era 3) is there any cultural awareness of transgender people? Since for some, their biological state would be affected by Feruchemical gold healing, and that would probably be a documented effect.
Brandon Sanderson
The different cultures and subcultures are going to look at this differently, but I'd say yes, there is awareness. And the more they experiment with the metallic arts being available outside of genetic lines, the more this will be understood for reasons you point out.
BlackYeti
Suppose you had a full Feruchemist, who got enough Breath to reach the Fifth Heightening. What would happen if he started storing in atium?
Brandon Sanderson
Hehehe -- I'm going to RAFO that one.
Questioner
If a nicrosil Ferring and Misting Twinborn burned a mountain of nicrosil, would he become Harmony?
Brandon Sanderson
A mountain?
Questioner
Yeah, like, he burned literally tons--
Brandon Sanderson
No, he would not. It wouldn't work that way.
Questioner
Is there a comparable way-- like you can become a Misting by burning an alloy of lerasium and some other metal--
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
Is there a comparable way of becoming a Ferring?
Brandon Sanderson
Uh… *carefully* Comparable within certain limits of the definition of that word, then yes.
Questioner
Just meaning, is there some in-world way--
Brandon Sanderson
There is some in-world procedure yes.
Tehdren
For instance, a person's spiritual component knows how old they are.
Wow. Has this been talked about before? This kind of seems like a big tidbit. Now we have some idea of how Hoid changes his age?
Brandon Sanderson
I haven't said if this is a method Hoid uses or not, but it's part of the reason the Lord Ruler turned to dust when he lost his metalminds. (His body tried to match the age his spirit said he was.)
Phantine
If they somehow killed the Lord Ruler in a conventional manner, would he still have turned to dust?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. The metalminds would have stopped being tapped, and the spirit of the matter would probably still have had this strange effect. Not it didn't happen to the bodies of the shard vessels who died.
Phantine
Would koloss spikes turn off when they die too, so dead ones shrivel up like raisins?
Brandon Sanderson
Hemalurgy changes the spirit. So not necessarily.
Questioner
I'm really curious if a tinmind could store the ability to sense pain.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, that is theoretically possible, yes. Yes.
Nethseäar
If you were to Hemalurgically give a fallen Elantrian Feruchemic gold, would they be able to store Health?
Brandon Sanderson
A fallen Elantrian store Health-- And you gave them a Hemalurgic spike-- That’s a good question, I would think-- *long pause* You know I think they would not be able to, that’s an excellent question.
Nethseäar
Would it suddenly store up the moment they were restored?
Brandon Sanderson
No, it would not suddenly recover everything. Unless you wanted to channel-- You could do some goofy things but it would kinda ruin their connection to the Dor. But I don’t think it would suddenly-- Y’know. You might be able to do something where you steal it away from them, that could possibly happen. If they were spiked while they were full Elantrian you could probably get more out of them than your average person.
mikkomikk
It just stores wakefulness right? I don't think it gives you the actual benefits of a good night's sleep. So after an extended period of bronze Compounding, your body will start deteriorating and eventually die.
Brandon Sanderson
Bronze Compounding will indeed let you never have to sleep. /u/mikkomikk as a good theory, as I haven't really talked about this, and that might be the way to theorize without more info--but it was designed to let people go without sleep, and does give benefits of a good night's sleep.
ElTigreChang1
Alternatively, could you compound copper for a supernatural sleeping aid? or would that just lead to accidentally sleeping for 16 hours
Brandon Sanderson
Copper? I don't see that working, I'm afraid. Did you mean bronze?
You could fill bronze to sleep. (This is actually the very first power for Mistborn I imagined, back in highschool. Wishing, as an insomniac, I could sleep when I wanted to and be rested when I wanted to.)
Steeldancer
Hoid. Does he have more unkeyed metalminds?
Brandon Sanderson
Hoid has access to lots of different things, so, yes he does.
Snipexe
What would happen if Nightblood was swung at a gold compounder?
Brandon Sanderson
What do you think would happen?
Snipexe
They would survive. Maybe.
Brandon Sanderson
Hmmm, I will RAFO it.
BartimaeusTrilogyFan
Can Feruchemists store more than the five ‘traditional’ senses, and does Allomantic tin enhance more than the traditional five senses?
Brandon Sanderson
More is possible.
Dirigible
Can you store....like if there is a Twinborn, who is a gold Allomancer and a duralumin Ferring, would his goldshadow change based on what his Connection is?
Brandon Sanderson
I'm going to RAFO that.
Calderis
In Shadows of Self, in the scene where Paalm is speaking to Wax from a floor above, she rushes out the window and down past him. The window isn't damaged, the earth that she runs on isn't damaged, and she runs down a flight of stairs at speed. Being as "speed" affects gravity, and physics apply to Paalm as if she were moving at normal speed, is Feruchemical steel a temporal effect?
Brandon Sanderson
*laughs* Nice. I'm going to ask for more definition. What do you mean by temporal effect. What exactly do you mean by that? Are you reaching into magic system definitions, or are you trying to use our definitions? Give me more.
Questioner
I was wondering if an aluminum Feruchemist, if he stores up Spiritual Identity, could he survive a hit from a Shardblade?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that. Identity is not the right place to go for that. Exact mechanics are RAFO, but that's kinda along the wrong path.
Questioner
I had a question about [steel] Ferrings. So, I saw that you had mentioned in a previous talk that you could only move so fast with air resistance, like eventually you'd start burning up. If you were to become an Edgedancer as well?
Brandon Sanderson
If you can combine those two powers, Edgedancing and [steel] Ferring, then you are able to do things that would circumvent that restriction. Yes, indeed.
Dirigible
(paraphrased)
If you tapped blank Identity in an area, would you develop the area's accent?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It's part of what you need. You need to both blank your Identity and tap Connection to get the accent.
PhantomMonstrosity
(paraphrased)
Let's say we had a platypus Feruchemist, who can sense electric fields. Could he make a tinmind for that sense?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Platypus tinmind should work.
Is it possible to be a full Feruchemist and a Misting or vice versa, like a lopsided Twinborn?
Possible, yes. Highly unlikely, but possible.
Oversleep
Could you write [sign] the Alcatraz like Alcatraz?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. He signs upside down.
Oversleep
Would tapping Connection increase the steelsight?
Brandon Sanderson
No, probably not, there are arrangements that could make that happen but just tapping it, no.
Bat_Mannington
If a Windrunner lashed Wax upwards, could he dump all of his weight into his metalminds and be unaffected or would the lashing affect his clothes and whatever else he had on him too?
Brandon Sanderson
Wax could mitigate the effect (unless he was in a vacuum) but not eliminate it completely.
faragorn
Vacuum or freefall?
It can be easy to confuse them in the context of surface to orbit.
Brandon Sanderson
I was talking about a Vacuum, but it's good to clarify. What I'm saying is that without wind resistance, his mass doesn't matter--and the books have established that what Wax does is a freakish transformation of his mass, not just his weight.
Kaladin changes how much gravity pulls on someone, and in what direction. Wax (basically, it's more complex than this) changes how much mass he has. The two, then, have some very distinctive effects.
Walin
Can Feruchemists tell whose metal-mind it is, when it's not their own, based on the Identity?
Brandon Sanderson
This is theoretically possible, but they can't tell just as a rule. Like, just automatically.
