Could a Shard like Harmony create new elemental metals, like harmonium, or is that unconscious--
Brandon Sanderson
So, unconscious isn't the right word, but a manifestation of his will being the same as manifestation of the laws of physics in the world, if that makes sense. It's not like a choice, it's not, like, not a choice either, to create others, it is theoretically possible, but what has happened is more in line with the laws of his realm.

Shallan explains the theory that all spren can be divided into two categories (emotions and forces). Jasnah then links these to Cultivation and Honor, and also notes that voidspren are of Odium.
Is this theory maybe a little incomplete? Is there a third category of spren for "sensationspren" like painspren (which don't seem to involve emotions or forces)?
Brandon Sanderson
In Vorin thought, those would be emotions, but that doesn't mean that the scholars who think about these things are right.
What would happen if you gave [a mistwraith] a spike imbued with steel Allomancy? I'm assuming that wouldn't be enough to grant it sentience but could it then use steel powers? Can you give Allomantic powers to a kandra?
Hemalurgy can give Allomantic powers to a kandra. The process to do so is not known to anyone but Harmony.
goody153
Are we gonna get more hints or insight about Harmony's involvement (the dudes he sent) or other non-Roshar shards involvement in the next book ?
Brandon Sanderson
There will continue to be hints in the books.
goody153
Ah thanks ! I wasn't expecting for you to reply . Good to know, i always found it interesting how many world hoppers are there in Stormlight so i figured there might be shards like at least watching Roshar events.
Might i ask if there are one or more non-Roshar shards that would be poking around?
Brandon Sanderson
I'm going to have to RAFO this. Watch and see what you find! :)
Some dictionaries list two meanings for the word "odium": the feeling of strong hatred, and that which provokes hatred from others. Do both of these apply to the Shard with that name?
Yes.
KingSloth
Is Odium's method of smothering shards inspired at all by the way Adonalsium was originally shattered? Or of his own devising?
Brandon Sanderson
It is not obvious to other Shards. But there are relationships.
athos45678
Did Honor and Cultivation interact with Odium when he first came in a neutral way or was it immediately an all out conflict?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Argent
...The reason Odium dealt with the Selish Shards in the way that he did, whether that was primarily because he was inexperienced in Splintering and so he knew that he wanted nobody to take the Shards--
Brandon Sanderson
There were better ways he could have done what he did.
Argent
And he then learned at least a little bit better?
Brandon Sanderson
He learned at least a little bit better.

(paraphrased)
Is Odium influencing Kaladin in a similar way as Ruin was influencing Vin?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No.
Questioner
Does Odium know about Glys?
Brandon Sanderson
Who? Oh, Glys. *sighs* Yes, he does. But.
Mason Wheeler
If Harmony could make it so that koloss can reproduce, why is it he did not do the same thing for the kandra?
Brandon Sanderson
*long pause* I'm not sure how to answer this without straying in directions I don't want to go. It was a conscious choice, I'll tell you that.
Paladin Brewer
Out of all the Shards, why does Odium go for Devotion and Dominion?
Brandon Sanderson
He targets people with two kinds of ideas. Number one, he can argue they're breaking the rules they set out. And two, people he thinks are a good match for him, or a challenge, or a danger.
fletchershair
How long has Odium been on Roshar?
Brandon Sanderson
I would have to grab the timeline and pull it out. That's one of the ones I'd just have to eyeball. It has been a while. A long time.
fletchershair
And has he been on Scadrial or Nalthis? Because we know he's been on Sel.
Brandon Sanderson
He is aware of both of them. But I'm not gonna say if he was on them or not.
Valhalla
Ruin and Odium, they both talked about their passion, and it was italicized both times. Would any other Shards talk about passion in that same italicized way?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes they would.
Valhalla
Would any of them not talk about it that way?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Excellent, good questions.
ericth
What is Odium's edge? Vin and Ati killed each other, but Rayse has downed 3 shards and survived. Was it skill, ability, numbers or possibly un-dispersed power?
Brandon Sanderson
Some combination of the above.
Dev_Chatelain
Have we met Odium's champion yet?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO!
Kogiopsis
(paraphrased)
How long before the events of Elantris did Odium kill Aona/Devotion and Skai/Dominion?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Same time as the origins of the seons.
Are Odium and Devotion opposites?
One could make that argument.
Questioner
Saying that, "Odium did not leave his power behind on Sel. He left several other powers which are now, to a large extent, mindless." So, is another power- did he have some kind of *inaudible* under control or--
Brandon Sanderson
So I dodged that one very easily. I was talking about Dominion and Devotion, which he could have taken up and left behind. It technically answered the question. That was the answer. I even said on a tape later on "I wiggled out of that one real well," but they didn't know how I wiggled out of it. When they said "Did he leave behind any powers?" Those are the powers he left behind.
Questioner
But they weren't his powers?
Brandon Sanderson
No, but they were-- As soon as he killed them, he could have had them, right? So it definitely gave me wiggle room.
Blightsong
(paraphrased)
Is it normal for people to become Connected to an area after being there for a bit, like with Kel and wherever he was when he found the Ire, or is something special going on?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It is normal for a Cognitive Shadow to get stuck to places, because they exist through investiture it is normal for them to get tied to an area. Kelsier was still in Scadrial when he found the Ire. This happened with Odium and the two shards on Roshar, Preservation to Ruin, and the Heralds.
Questioner
Have we seen a physical personification of Odium like how Vin was...
Brandon Sanderson
You have not.
Questioner
Is there any reason why Odium's known as the Broken One? Has he got some part of him ripped off? ...Has he had any Investiture ripped off of him?
Brandon Sanderson
Has he had Investiture ripped off of him? Yes, asterisk.
R'Shara
Has Braize always been 9-centric or did it become so because of Odium?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Questioner
When Odium says, "We Killed You," who is he referring to?
Brandon Sanderson
*Hands RAFO card*
Questioner
Is Harmony only able to see and watch over Scadrial or will he be able to see the potential of other parts of the cosmere?
Brandon Sanderson
We'll talk about that in an upcoming story. You'll get more clues about that very soon.
Questioner
Very soon?
Brandon Sanderson
Very soon.
Questioner
Like before the end of the night?
Brandon Sanderson
Poten-- Well not-- Potentially before the end of the night, yes.
Questioner
Is there anything I should look at as a hint for something we haven’t figured out yet?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, that's a good question too. There are moments through the entire original trilogy that people haven't figured out yet. But they've picked out most of what they are, they just don't know why. Like they know something weird is happening, they don't know-- They haven't guessed why the weirdness is happening. The weirdness is figure-out-able, but it would be hard. But it's not outside of reason for you to figure out why these certain moments-- these moments people have not yet figured out.
Questioner
Because Odium had influence on Scadrial.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Not a ton, but yes.
Questioner
...Kelsier had an irrational hatred for Nobles.
Brandon Sanderson
He did, he did indeed.
Questioner
For spoiler reasons... is the Thrill at all attached to Odium?
Brandon Sanderson
Book three will give more explanation to this. But attached, you could say, that is related.
Seonid
If Cultivation and Honor were romantically involved, why did Cultivation not help Honor against Odium?
Brandon Sanderson
She did.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Odium locked the Selish Shards in the Cognitive Realm to keep them from achieving sentience or someone Ascending.
How is Harmony balanced when a part of Preservation's power is expended on human sentience? Isn't that what caused all the trouble to begin with?
Indeed. Hm... What could Sazed be doing with that extra power...
Valhalla
(paraphrased)
Did Odium Splinter all the Shards for the same reason?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No. Some Shards he Splintered because he feared the Shard itself, and some Shards he targeted because he feared the Vessel. He was working his way down his list in order of the Shards and Vessels he felt would be most dangerous to his plans until he got stuck on Roshar.
Ace_of_Face
How was Sazed/Harmony able to communicate with Waxillium near the end of the book? During the original trilogy, Ruin could occasionally implant thoughts into people's minds, but he couldn't just listen in whenever he felt like it. Is Harmony just way more powerful?
Brandon Sanderson
There is interesting discussion about this one below, which I like to see. I thought this might spark some discussion. Remember that human beings were given more of Preservation than Ruin during their creation, which led to Preservation eventually being overwhelmed by Ruin. That was the bargain; people would be of Preservation at their core, but in turn Ruin got to claim the world once Preservation wound down.
Another factor to consider here is that Wax was given a special earring designed for communication with a being that he actually worships.

Did Bavadin in any way help Odium splinter Dominion and Devotion?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Uhh...
Moridin997
(paraphrased)
(sensing an incoming RAFO): In any way...
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Uhh... Yes... Yes, you could say that...

Can you write in one of my books about something we don't know about the Shards, or at least one of the Shards?
Brandon Sanderson
*written* Odium has killed at least one more Shard than the ones we know about.
Kiiyashi
If Rashek had been in a position to claim Preservation and Ruin simultaneously, as Sazed did, would he have been able to to Ascend to Harmony, another combination of the two Shards, or just one?
Brandon Sanderson
All three are possible.
CrypticVoidbringer
(paraphrased)
When Khriss visits Scadrial, does Harmony know it?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
*written* Some times He does. (more often than not, these days...) But it is possible to hide.
*spoken* Khriss doesn't have a lot of reasons to hide. She doesn't mind the attention, usually.
Questioner
Can Odium or any other [Shards] edit text like Ruin could? ...Or is that a special Ruin thing.
Brandon Sanderson
This is possible for others as well. The trick about it is, [Ruin] saturated everything on Scadrial in a way that not all Shards saturate their planets.
Questioner
Okay, what do you mean "saturate"?
Brandon Sanderson
Creating it, does that make sense? And so this was partially an aspect of the fact that everything on that planet, every atom was, y'know, had him in it... I mean he didn't create the atoms, let's say that, but yeah... The whole planet's existence and particularly the people on it are [Ruin], attuned to [Ruin].
Questioner
When Odium says "We killed you." Is that RAFO, or?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO... I'm just not confirming it or denying it, what it means.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Odium is able to influence all 3 [inhabited] planets in the Rosharan system.
Paleo
(paraphrased)
Is Tashi a Herald and if so, which one? Is Nun Raylisi Odium?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes to both. I think the Herald is Ishar, but I'd have to double check.
Questioner
When is the official timeline gonna get released for the whole cosmere?
Brandon Sanderson
So, I only gave it to Peter, who is my continuity editor, like, in September. And that's the first time he'd seen it. I think it's gonna take a little while, he says he wants to go through in minutia and make it work. Plus there's major spoilers for things that Odium has done, and stuff like that.
Mason Wheeler
(paraphrased)
You know the principle where someone who has two powers actually has three powers, because of resonance?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yeah?
Mason Wheeler
(paraphrased)
How does this apply to Harmony, who has two entire Shards?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
RAFO.
Questioner
Odium has, as I understand it, something like the meaning of God's divine wrath. How is wrath on its own able to cause such terrible destruction? I mean, he primarily attacked di-Shardic worlds like Sel and Roshar, so could he just have sowed discord between Shards there to an extent of them actually fighting against each other and then just *inaudible*.
Brandon Sanderson
That is a good theory, that he got them to fight against each other. I won't tell you whether it happened or not, but it is a very valid theory. It's fully within his capacity; that's the sort of thing that he does.
Does the Shard Odium seek to separate things, much like the Shard Honor seeks to bind things together?
An interesting theory.
Questioner
*asks for a "future quote of Harmony"*
Brandon Sanderson
This is clever, I've never had this before.
Questioner
I wondered whether I could challenge you to do it...
Brandon Sanderson
*writes* "It is yours."
I don't know if that will actually be the quote, but you can come ask me after Mistborn 9?
Questioner
Did Odium go directly to Roshar from... after he destroyed Devotion?
Brandon Sanderson
No. There were other places.
Argent
I thought, like, at one of the signings you told me that when Odium was on Sel and Splintered the Shards there, the reason he did the Cognitive Realm hack was because he was not yet experienced in Splintering stuff.
Brandon Sanderson
Right. He did not want what happened to happen, but he didn't know that he didn't want what happened to happen.
Argent
What I was getting at is, I could never find a recording of you saying "He was not experienced. He didn't want the power to be taken by anyone, and that's the only solution he could figure out." Does that sound like something you would say?
Brandon Sanderson
That is something I would say, yes... There are better ways to do what he wanted to do, which he later did a better job with. But there's not a lot of experimenting he could do.
Argent
Limited number of subjects, right?
Brandon Sanderson
Mmhmm.
Mason Wheeler
Harmonium is ettmetal... Its chemicals properties are sort of analogous to cesium. It explodes in contact with water. People are made out of water. You try to spike someone, you try to swallow it, you try to wear it as jewelry, it will not end well. Why in the world would he pick something so inharmonious?
Brandon Sanderson
He didn't pick it. It's unstable because of the two halves of him not meshing well.
faragorn
When I asked you during a signing about how Rayse took down the other shards, you RAFOd it. Was that because it will be explicitly covered at some point in the series, or more because the subject will affect things later (possibly vaguely answering my question) and you dont want the info to get out too early?
And can you give anything on when it might be touched on? Front five, back five, book five?
Brandon Sanderson
There are a ton of reasons, and you've touched on several. It will be touched on increasingly going forward, but I'm not going to say when (firmly) it will be discussed in depth.
Slowswift
Has the Cognitive Realm of Scadrial changed at all since Sazed redid everything?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that, I'll RAFO that.
