Questioner
I want to know when we're gonna hear of Denth and his further adventures?
Brandon Sanderson
Further adventures. Denth? You probably mean Vasher. Oh, that's... you will get more. It's not in the immediate future, because I feel like spending four years to get the second Stormlight book out was too long. I will write more Warbreaker in the coming years. More is coming. There's very important stories to be told, but I have to... It's not in line until at least I finish Stormlight Three. Which will be my next adult book that I'm gonna write. I'm writing Rithmatist 2 next, during the summer, and then I'm doing Stormlight next. It will be a couple years. But when I do write the sequel, which is called Nightblood, I will post the chapters online as I write them, just like I did with the first book.
Questioner
When Zahel worldhopped to Roshar, did he ever do that before Warbreaker?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, in fact Roshar was where the idea for Nightblood kind of came from.
Questioner
Will you ever write about that?
Brandon Sanderson
I will probably reference it in future books and maybe I'll do some flashbacks, but I haven't decided. I'm unlikely to write a book that covers that time period on its own.
Comatose
Was Nightblood black before being awakened by Shashara?
Brandon Sanderson
No.
BlackYeti
Regarding Vasher... what was his name before he Returned?
Brandon Sanderson
That is a RAFO, but just a minor one... Vasher's past is a factor in Nightblood the book, and so I'm staying away from all answers about that.
Questioner
What metal is Nightblood made out of?
Brandon Sanderson
Uh, RAFO.
Questioner
I assume I'm going to learn a lot more about this in Stormlight 3 but Nightblood, is he more dangerous or less dangerous now that he-- obviously he needs Investiture that is why *audio obscured* any Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
I'd say more dangerous, a little bit easier to get the Stormlight.
Questioner
I assumed I'd learn a lot more about him...
Brandon Sanderson
You will, and he's pretty dangerous, but he is also less dangerous because other people have Shardblades, if that makes sense.
Questioner
Can you create a Shardblade with Breath?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. That’s what Nightblood is.
onelowerlight
What first gave you the idea for Warbreaker? What was your first inspiration for it?
Brandon Sanderson
WRBRKR came from a lot of sourcres. Siri and Vivenna were side characters in a book I never finished.
Vasher came from the line that starts the book. No space to post it here, but give it a read.
Nightblood came because…well, I just wanted to have a talking sword.
Oudeis16
Could a typical Awakener give Breaths to Nightblood?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Oudeis16
Could it use those Breaths to Awaken?
Brandon Sanderson
No.
Chaos
When Nightblood killed the Fused, are those Fused souls retrievable?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
DoritoJH
What would happen if Nightblood were wielded inside of a perpendicularity for a significant period of time?
Brandon Sanderson
Bad things. Depends on the perpendicularity. He could probably collapse a perpendicularity, so bad things would happen.
It's Just Alex
Why doesn't Nightblood turn people to smoke on Nalthis?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO, but mostly because I want to make sure I get my story straight on that.
Jeremy
(paraphrased)
What are the pre-requisites for someone becoming Returned? Does it depend on how much Breath they have?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It does not depend on the quantity of breath, but I'm not revealing the specific pre-requisites, since I need to save something for Nightblood.
asmodeus
If the only variable we change, during the creation of Nightblood, is to use a different Allomantically-viable metal (say, iron or bronze instead of steel), but keep everything else constant (the same Breaths, same people doing the same visualization, and whatever other factors were involved), would it have manifested different powers/capabilities?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Most likely.
Rillum
Can't wait to see Nightblood in Roshar. Assuming he feeds on Stormlight rather than breath, he's going to be much "cheaper" to use. Loved the interactions with Vivenna.
Brandon Sanderson
Cheaper indeed. But don't underestimate his hunger.
Fluffy
(paraphrased)
When the Five Scholars traveled to Roshar, this happened post Recreance, so most Shardblades would have been dead, how did Nightblood gain sapience?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Shardblades weren’t the only Blades around that were active, there were Honorblades. Honorblades are self-aware, but do not manifest a spren in the Cognitive Realm.
Questioner
Are we ever going to find out who brought Nightblood to Roshar?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
Is the sword at the end of Words of Radiance, is it the actual Nightblood from Warbreaker?
Brandon Sanderson
It is, actually. It's fun because when I first wrote Way of Kings in 2002, Vasher was one of the main characters. And then when I wrote Warbreaker in 2006, I wrote a book about him to do his past. And then when I re-wrote Way of Kings it's like, "Well, time for Vasher to come back." So he's been in Roshar, in my head, since the beginning, for some 20 years. But he wasn't-- He didn't originate there, but... He was one of the worldhoppers that I hid in the very first version. Which was a lot of fun to then be able to go write a book about him and come back.
Silasary
So Nightblood drains investiture from people. How would it operate on Sel?
Questioner 2
Oh yeah, because the investiture's in the ground, practically.
Brandon Sanderson
...On Sel-- I mean Investiture is in everything, right? So I don't imagine it having a difference on Sel in the Physical Realm from what you normally see.
Questioner
If a [Vessel] were to hold Nightblood, who would give up first?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Ashley
Do you ever plan to use bio‐chroma again? It'd be a shame to see such an interesting and original idea left with a single book.
Brandon Sanderson
It is unlikely that I will use this magic system in a different book because it is distinctly tied to that particular Shard. The sequel likelihood is good. There is more to tell in this world, so there is a decent chance I will return and do a second WARBREAKER book (I've been calling it NIGHTBLOOD when I've mentioned it before). That isn't to say that there will never be magic systems that will repeat across series—in fact there's a decent chance that will happen—but I'm not going to say any more on that right now.
Questioner
With your thinking about the sequel to Warbreaker, Nightblood, are you-- Is what is going on in your head going to help set up for The Stormlight Archive?
Brandon Sanderson
And the other books? Yes it is. It is kind of a connecting book for those.
Questioner
Now I just gotta know how [Nightblood] got there.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, you do. There will be some hints in the next book.
Questioner
Warbreaker, you were talking about a sequel. Is that for sure?
Brandon Sanderson
It is a for sure thing. It's not a direct sequel, meaning some of the characters will be in it, other ones won't. I need to get Nightblood into a certain place.
Pagerunner
Is Nightblood like the Tzai Blows... from Dragonsteel, where he pulverizes a Spiritual aspect, and it has a result on the Physical? Is that what he does, popping into smoke?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, he is attacking directly at the spirit.
Questioner
Is there a correlation, at all, between Awakening steel, a blade, and the revival of spren every time a Shardblade is summoned? I mean, I know Invesiture is Investiture is Invesiture.
Brandon Sanderson
So revival of the spren so--
Questioner
Similar.
Brandon Sanderson
Okay. So, are you talking about a live Shardblade or a dead one, or it doesn’t matter.
Questioner
Like Nightblood.
Brandon Sanderson
Okay.
Questioner
Awakening the steel, like that, Shardblades <are like Awakening metal> and stuff.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. The big difference here is that in one you’re using a physical component, right, and Investing it. In another, a more pure Investiture is passing into the Physical Realm and taking on an embodiment, a shape. Does that make sense? And so, similar but different things. There is a correlation, but it’s not--yeah.
Questioner
Is there a limit to the amount of Investiture that Nightblood can hold.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Yep, there is.
Steeldancer
The Heralds, back before Honor died, were they directly powered by Honor?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. You’ll find out more about that, but the Shardblades [pretty sure he means Honorblades here] were pieces of Honor’s soul that he gave them and direct access to his essence.
Steeldancer
Like Vin and Elend?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, a little like that. That’s why Honorblades don’t work like Shardblades do, like Radiants do.
Steeldancer
The second part of the question is, what would happen if they were directly powered by Honor and they were holding Nightblood?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO
Questioner
Does Nightblood annihilate Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
Investiture cannot be created or destroyed. It can only change forms. But, anything more than that is a RAFO.
Questioner
Will we ever find out the when, how, and why Vasher and Nightblood moved to Roshar?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, but I don't know when it will happen. I will get around to it.
Questioner
What happens if a kandra eats Nightblood?
Brandon Sanderson
That would be bad for them.
ethnicallyambiguous
If Nightblood were a Magic card, what would its abilities/stats be?
Brandon Sanderson
Equipment. When equipped creature does combat damage, destroy all other creatures. During your upkeep, pay WUBRG or you lose the game. (Note, I have no development chops, so I have no idea how to properly cost the artifact or the equip.)
Walin
Does Nightblood contain any atium?
Brandon Sanderson
No.
Bridge4AM
(paraphrased)
How significant is it that Nightblood has a metal sheath?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It is significant.
Questioner
Is Nightblood more or less susceptible to damage and/or death when he's satiated on Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
Satiated, he's much less dangerous. More susceptible, I would say by technicality, yes. When he's full, it's gonna be harder for him to pull in things, so all sorts of things could happen. So yes. But it's not that he's weaker, it's not like the metal is easier to break or bend, it's more that he's not as likely to suck your soul.
Questioner
So he behaves more like a regular sword.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, a little bit more. Still, for human levels of Investiture, still really dangerous to touch him. He's satiated, but if he's at 100%, and the amount of you he could eat represents 0.001%, the moment a little of that wears off, you're gone. So still would not be picking him up in most cases, just out of that, "Oh! He got a little hungry again!" But in terms of larger, grand scale Shard stuff, much safer to handle.
morph147
So first and foremost, is there going to be a second Warbreaker?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, but I can't promise when. I want to do a book that deals more with the Lifeless and Nightblood, following Vasher and Vivenna a little further. But the WoT made me shelf this project for now. We'll see. It should happen eventually.
Argent
Can a sentient object be created on Roshar? By just-- In a way similar to how the Scholars created Nightblood?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh?
Argent
No?
Brandon Sanderson
No I wasn't saying no I was saying well that's kind of what the Shardblades are.
Argent
Kind of.
Brandon Sanderson
Mmhmm.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
Why is Vasher on Roshar? Is he trying to get back Nightblood?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Kind of a RAFO. I won't go into all his reasons right now but there is one thing that was difficult to get on Nalthis that is much easier to get on Roshar. Going to Roshar solved that problem for him.
Storming Radiant
Can Susebron break Nightblood's commands?
Brandon Sanderson
Nope.
Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)
Susebron just isn't strong enough.
Questioner
How did Nightblood get on Roshar?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Mason Wheeler
What would happen if someone carried Nightblood unsheathed into a perpendicularity?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Brandon Sanderson
First is Nightblood's mention of Yesteel. I believe this is the first mention of him in the book. If you've been paying attention, you probably realized that there was one person missing out of the Five Scholars. Vasher, Denth, Arsteel, Shashara . . . and this guy. You'll see him in the sequel. (And yes, he's much better at sneaking than Vasher or Vivenna.)
yulerule
*Written:* So somewhere it says that the number of Breaths doesn't determine the power of the object. But are the number of Breaths directly tied to how much Investiture is in an object? You're repeatedly said that Nightblood is ridiculously heavily Invested, more so than Shardblades, Honorblades, or the Bands of Mourning. But it only has a thousand Breaths, which doesn't seem all that much from the point of view of the God King--Tenth Heightening, over 50,000.
Brandon Sanderson
So this is a RAFO, but you're starting to ask the right questions there. Okay?
*Writes:* RAFO
Questioner 1
[Warbreaker] ends on, you could totally write a second one. Is that in the works?
Brandon Sanderson
It is, but it's kind of a distant plan. It's kind of just more for fun. I wrote this-- I had already written Way of Kings, and I wrote this as a prequel to Way of Kings on a different world, and then it got published before Way of Kings got published. But the characters from this were already continuity in Way of Kings, so I just kept using them, because I figured it works out. Really, Warbreaker, I see it as Vasher's (and Nightblood, the sequel), the prequel, to where he came from, who was Kaladin's swordmaster in the first version of Way of Kings back when Kaladin was training to be a Shardbearer in the first book. Vasher was a major part of that, and Warbreaker was a flashback to where he'd come from.
Questioner 2
Vasher is Zahel, right?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, Vasher is Zahel from The Stormlight Archive. Who is still kind of the swordmaster, but he's no longer Kaladin's, it didn't work out that way. But he ends up as Renarin's instead.
Questioner
Is the sword given to Szeth at the end of the book [Words of Radiance] related to Nightblood from Warbreaker?
Brandon Sanderson
It's the same sword.
Questioner
It is?
Brandon Sanderson
Mmhmm.
ebilutionist
Hey, Brandon, is there any chance you could tell us something about Nightblood? I'd definitely love to know more about it/him/her.
Also, I recently went through the Warbreaker annotations and found the part where you mentioned that had Lightsong not done what he did, the Hallandren would have been destroyed by the Idris in another Manywar, with the latter having obtained Awakened blades from Yesteel.
Did Yesteel gain the ability to create Awakened swords from Shashara's own research, or did he discover it independently?
Brandon Sanderson
These are questions that I intend to answer in future books, I'm afraid. So RAFO. (sorry.)
Questioner
So is it possible to Awaken a Shardblade? That's the question-- that's my question for you.
Brandon Sanderson
Um... With the magic system of Awakening, you mean?
Questioner
Yeah.
Brandon Sanderson
So, all forms of Investiture strongly resist other forms of Investiture.
Questioner
Makes sense.
Brandon Sanderson
*brief interruption* Nightblood is essentially an Awakened... Trying to do that.
Questioner
'Cause he shows up in Words of Radiance, right?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. So, it-- let's just say it'd be very, very hard. Because it's like saying, "Can-- I want to turn on a lightbulb that's been turned on." Yes, you can... maybe... I don't know what that even means. It's already Invested. It's already Awakened.
Questioner
We were wondering about Nightblood, if he's sort of out-of-place on Roshar? 'Cause he's sort of the opposite of change, right?
Brandon Sanderson
He is supposed to be really out of place. He is a messed-up, messed-up... sword thing.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
What would happen if Nightblood was drawn in the Spiritual Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Trademark, REALLY bad thing.
Questioner
What would happen if you released Nightblood in a highstorm?
Brandon Sanderson
I'll RAFO that for now. It's an intriguing question though, I approve of that question.
