Did Kelsier name the Ghostbloods or was that a coincidence?
RAFO
Navani's lecture on fabrial science mentions that a tin cage can cause a painrial to numb painā —presumably a pewter one can enhance it. The same epigraph also tells us that more advanced cages, with iron and steel, can change the fabrial's polarity. What does polarity mean in this context? What effects would iron and steel have on that pain-numbing fabrial?
RAFO! We'll get into it Evgeni. Well, I'll say I intend to get into it, whether I actually will have the chance. I was pushing it in that book with the amount of fabrial and scientific sort of stuff, and I want to be careful not to always be pushing that line. Because while some people love it, it gets very fiddly.
Will Wax end up being one of the champions chosen or end up on Roshar?
*hands RAFO card*
If you took a Parshendi... And they were born outside Roshar and never visited Roshar in their lives, would they hear the Rhythms beyond Roshar?
Would they hear the Rhythms beyond Roshar... If you took one that was not born on Roshar, would they feel the Rhythms off-Roshar or just Rhythms in general?
Rhythms in general.
Yes, they would sense them.
Even beyond Roshar?
What they are sensing... it's something that pervades the Cosmere but on Roshar has specific way of manifesting.
Is it the same thing that Soothers and Rioters are using?
Now you're straying into RAFO territory with your question/good question...
How would a nightmare react to silver?
RAFO
Secondly a theory of mine is around the healing factor of Stormlight. I believe that the healing was added later by Honor because it would heal away the Ashyn diseases that bring powerful Surgebinding - it's Tanavast's way of preventing the Ashyn magic system following Odium and Humanity over to Roshar. Can you confirm healing is a newer addition to Stormlight, or comment on this at all?
For the second, I'll RAFO for now. Interesting theory!
Can we finally confirm what type of spren is used to create half-shards? Is it Radiant spren, Shardplate spren, or something different?
RAFO! This theoretically should be confirmed in the RPG. We should be giving you all the tools that you need for these sorts of things, including all of the armor spren, all the different brands of Fused, and things like that. The stuff we need so that you can roleplay...
People who are making them?
Yeah. This should all get confirmed in that.
Were the Shattered Plains broken before Natanatan fell?
Let me RAFO that one just because there's enough there that I want to... how it was Shattered and what happened is...
Is Hoid secretly a dragon?
Hoid is not secretly a dragon, but he did date one once.
Who is the dragon that Hoid dated?
RAFO!
Did Honor and Cultivation binding Odium to the Roshar system directly cause the death stroke to Honor?
*sighs indecisively for a good ten seconds* RAFO. It's fiddly.
Any chance we get some juicy pages [in Stormlight Four] on this mysterious Sibling that's been consuming all of my dreams the last few years?
RAFO, I'm afraid.
So, you talked about a weapon made by the enemies of Adonalsium, and you said it doesn't exist in it's original form. Do any remnants of it still exist in the Physical Realm?
Yes.
Have we seen any of those remnants on-screen?
*pause* RAFO.
In current continuity (and people would know this), Hoid's immortality comes from this. People who have read Dragonsteel know that.
RAFO on bronze/copper twinborns because I want to leave myself room to create things.
Is Design's noodle shop still in business at the time Hoid is telling [Yumi and the Nightmare Painter], under new management or otherwise?
RAFO
What spren types are Glys, Ivory, and Wyndle?
RAFO, because I haven't decided yet. I know generally what they are, but I don't know how I am going to call them in the books. It happens with other things in my writing, Shards for example - Odium was originally Hatred; the idea was the same, but I decided to change the actual word.
So the reasons the fans...*inaudible* ...because I've found-- there's some authors I've read who allowed that to happen, and it seemed like it could compromise the integrity of the book. However, once in a while someone will ask a question, I'm like, "...yeah," right? Like someone asked about-- if Shallan might have some latent bi tendencies, right? And she'd been admiring women throughout the books. I'm like, "Yes, she probably does." Like that's something that was there that I hadn't vocalized, so that happens. And once in a while they ask me questions I'm just stumped on because I hadn't even considered it. In those cases I'll either say that or I'll just say, "RAFO, I need to think about it."
*inaudible*
Yes, yes. Well, you come up with the fundamentals of a magic... *brief interruption* ...then some questions can be easily answered. If you know, okay-- how-- Like with Elantris the fact that they could do it in any medium. They could chisel it. They could do all of these things to get the-- if they want to get it drawn in the air, says that, you know,... *inaudible*. And so if you have the fundamentals and they are consistent, you can extrapolate. And the fans should be able to extrapolate too.
In Bands of Mourning, after Edwarn has admitted that he is trying to distract Wax from pursuing the Set, he mentions offhandedly that Wax should still look into the man that the Nightstreet gang killed on the train to New Seran, and that Wax would be “impressed.” Who is this man? And why did Edwarn say this?
RAFO.
Did Ati want to take up Ruin specifically?
RAFO!
Do Hoid's apprentices have a relationship with one another or are they complete strangers?
RAFO. That would give you perhaps too much information.
In his current revised in-world framework, would Vasher include the Lifeless in the same category as Shadows in the Type IIs? You've talked in the Warbreaker Annotations about how it was a mistake for the awakeners to keep the Lifeless in the dark:
Lightsong Sees the Lifeless and Takes Command of Them
They keep them in the dark. This is a bad idea. They don't realize it, but the Lifeless are far more aware than everyone assumes. Clod in this book is a foreshadowing of that, and there won't be much more about it in the rest of the novel. It's one of the focus points for the sequel, if I ever write it. (Which will actually have a Lifeless as a viewpoint character, if I can find a way to swing it.)
And then there is the in-story information given to us about how Lifeless retain some measure of their skills from before their death. Would it be fair to say that the Lifeless would be considered by Vasher to be Cognitive Shadows of this nature:
For the weaker ones, just kill the body again, make sure no one Invests the soul with more strength, and they’ll slip away in a few minutes.
This is RAFO material in that it is a possible plot point for a future Warbreaker book. (Sorry.)
Will we learn which Shard is associated with Tress's world, if any, and/or the name of her world at some point in the novel?
You will not hear the name of her world somewhere in the novel. (You heard it on this stream.) It's possible, actually, that I'll add it in now that we've got a name for it. It's possible, in that case.
Which Shard is associated? Well, I'll leave that to you to theorize, so that one is a RAFO, I'm afraid.
Is it possible to forge together Hemalurgic spikes of every Invested metal (both Feruchemical and Allomantic) to create a spike for a single bind point, thereby simultaneously providing the powers of each original metal?
RAFO.
So is there an opposing force to Adonalsium.
Good question, which has been asked before and i haven't answered it so I'm going to RAFO you as well.
I think that I have occasionally said 'yes' with the caveat that, obviously somebody opposed him because he was Shattered. I haven't confirmed if there is like a 'Devil' or something like that if that's what you're looking for.
Is there a way to reverse the Shaod?
Um-- *pause* There is a way to do basically anything.
So it's kind of a RAFO? Will we ever find--
No that's not what they asked, they asked if there is a way. Yes there is but how reasonable a way that is is very... vague...
At the danger of getting a RAFO, I have to ask: will we find out more about [the origins of] (and I quote the source) the " kind of leather bandolier and a backpack"?
That will be answered pretty soon.
When Hoid says that Virtuosity Splintered herself, does that mean "left a lot of Investiture lying around" or full-on "the Shard is no more" Splintering?
RAFO
Are Odium and Cultivation aware of Thaidakar?
Cultivation, yes. Odium… at one point. Depends on… Is Taravangian aware? That part’s a RAFO.
Is Edgli the name of Endowment?
RAFO.
We have now seen Midnight Essence on Lumar and as part of the Unmade on Roshar, should we assume that all the other Unmade have connections to Odium’s other conquests like maybe Sja-anat and Ambition?
Midnight Essence is more like Lightweaving in that multiple magic systems will reach the same conclusion. When something is done to the magic to corrupt it, it becomes like Midnight Essence. So while there are similarities between the two and they work the same they may not have the same point of origin.
So there is no meaningful connection between Sja-anat and Ambition?
You weren’t going to let me off the hook. You are theorizing in a very interesting direction. RAFO!
Is Liss a Surgebinder then?
Ha, RAFO.
can spren go thru walls like ghosts too?
Depends on the spren, and how strongly they've been pulled into the physical realm.
so the ones that cant are the ones people can trap in gems for fabriels?
do they catch them with big butterfly nets and thrwo a gem into the netting? or is it like pokemon where they just throw gems and hope they hit??
Ha. No, neither one. This is a RAFO, I'm afraid.
Is the Ghostblood symbol a stylized marewill flower?
RAFO! No, actually that’s WAFO - wait and find out.
Will steelminds be used in some way for the FTL travel you plan to have in the third trilogy?
RAFO.
Would a lerasium/atium alloy create a Feruchemist, rather than an atium misting?? What with the way that it’s an alloy of god metals, and the way that lerasium can be used to acquire other magics? As far as I know there is no lerasium left currently, so this one is also just for my curiosity!!
You can use the god metals from Scadrial to make a Feruchemist, but I have to RAFO the actual means.
Is Adonalsium a God Metal and not a person?
RAFO! Lot of people... I have been deliberately cagey. So you should assume that if I ever answer a thing where like they're saying Adonalsium - person and stuff like that, I have NOT canonized this and don't intend to canonize it. I try to take people's questions and deal with them and give them a good answer. But you shouldn't take it like, if they ask "When Adonalsium did this was he this?" and I answer it, be like "oh, he's canonizing the HE!" I have not really canonized other than there are plenty of people who refer to Adonalsium that way in the world.
Is Nazh aware of other Threnodites living on other planets, and is he one of an offshoot Threnodite spared from the Evil?
He is aware of others, but I'm going to RAFO what's up with Nazh.
In the Rhythm of War Ars Arcanum, Khriss says she sent her best agent among the Stonewards. Was that Nazh?
Yes.
Has he become a Radiant?
RAFO. But yes, she did send her best agent, and her best agent is Nazh. And he is not happy about it.
Is this Hoid recording a podcast? He kind of seems to be talking to people on several planets at the same time.
RAFO
At the end of Oathbringer, Taravangian makes a deal with Odium about defending Kharbranth, can you please spare Kharbranth. At the end of Rhythm of War, is that still relevant? Does he still have a pact with himself?
RAFO. Excellent question, I like the way you guys are thinking.
In Skyward, Spensa said her mother had purple eyes, and Alanik said she had never seen or heard of a human with eyes that color. Is it possible that Spensa has some UrDail blood in her?
RAFO
If Gavilar was still alive, would he most likely have aligned himself to or taken actions most similar to Dalinar, Amaram or Taravangian? In other words, which of the three is best acting out his will?
I can say he would align with one of them most certainly, but I want to RAFO this for now. (Though I might have made it clear elsewhere and not be remembering.)
What is the origin of Shardplate?
RAFO
If Odium went to Scadrial, would he be blind to metal there? Because I think you mentioned more than once that focuses are actually determined by planet.
I'm going to RAFO that. But that's one of those excellent questions. I'm amused people have figured out enough to be asking questions like that.
What would a kandra look like in Shadesmar, and do they have any special abilities in the Cognitive or Spiritual Realm?
Not sure if I want to canonize what they would look like. I will RAFO what they look like. There is nothing that they would have as a special power over a human being in the Cognitive Realm, except for the fact that they are trained to think of themselves in certain ways. They have mental training, someone else could learn this, but they have over many centuries, this ability. And your ability to perceive yourself in certain ways is very powerful in the cosmere, and the kandra are very good at this.
So it would less limiting than in the Physical Realm, where they have to adopt the bones and persona?
Here's the thing, if they went to the Cognitive Realm, they'd go there Physically, so they'd be under the same rules. There's a theoretical whatever out there that maybe, if they got killed, and their soul, and things like this, but in most cases, a kandra would go like a human would, and they'd be following the same rules. So if you got a kandra who somehow persisted as a Cognitive Shadow, they would have certain advantages over people who had not trained in perception the way they have.
When it is said that Honor started to go crazy towards the end of the Knights Radiant, were those Knights seeing Honor as he was slowly dying, or were they interacting with a Cognitive Shadow of Honor, like how Preservation left Fuzz behind?
RAFO
With all the new avatar lore from The Lost Metal, can and should the Stormfather be considered to be an avatar of Honor?
Ooooh, RAFO! What a wonderful question. There's some fertile ground for theorizing, there. I gave you the prologue of that so you could spend a few years theorizing, guys, so go ahead and go forth.
You have a tendency to write books with theocracies that are legitimately ruled by the gods, and this seems to be missing. Is that a direction that the Knights Radiant might be heading, or is something else going to happen?
I'm gonna RAFO that one. There was a theocracy on Roshar at one point. There was also a mage-ocracy, whatever you want to call it.
Priestocracy?
No, mage, magic-user...A lot of things have existed on Roshar.
Can you put the Cosmere books into [chronological] order?
Here is the order that I have publicly confirmed. There are obviously other books and stories fitting in there. For those, you’ll just need to RAFO.
Is Szeth bounded to the Oathstone (master) with magic/force or just with his honour? As I can remember, in the end of [The Way of Kings] he nearly killed Taravangian.
RAFO. :)
How long before the events of Elantris did Odium kill Aona/Devotion and Skai/Dominion?
Same time as the origins of the seons.
What does the Stormfather think of Cultivation?
He thinks the same as Honor thinks.
Would Allomancers born twins or triplets have the same metals?
It is more likely, but not 100%.
