The thing with the kandra naming, with two parts. Is that purely a kandra thing, or did it come from the First Generation and the Terris?
Brandon Sanderson
Good question, that’s a RAFO.

The thing with the kandra naming, with two parts. Is that purely a kandra thing, or did it come from the First Generation and the Terris?
Good question, that’s a RAFO.
Is there more significance to the 10 other planets around the Rosharan star system and them being gaseous? We know that Roshar's moons have unnatural orbits; so there seems to be some astronomical manipulation in the system.
Yes there is significance of 16 in cosmere and 10 in Rosharan system.
The outer 10 gas giants in the Rosharan system suggest a tie to the number 10 that predates the arrival of the current Shards. Is the prominent numerology we see around the cosmere an inherent property of the planets, rather than the Shards who invest them?
Big RAFO.
Would Ashyn/Braize share the 10-centric numerology of Roshar?
Yes 10-centric is for the entire Rosharan planetary system...wait Braize is 9-centric.
How do Bondsmiths use the Dawnshards?
RAFO.
In Oathbringer, Taravangian tells Dalinar that there is metal falling from the sky, anything more on that?
The rainfall on Roshar is full of elements; and metal is not maybe not 100% accurate. But crem, that solidifies, comes down with the rain water.
He says that's what they were using to make half-shards.
Oh, you're talking about that! I'll RAFO that for now.
In the Cosmere, as space becomes more developed...*inaudible* outer space.
It's an interesting question that I've had to ponder. Would the space race happen more slowly because there's an alternative, or would it happen more quickly because you know other planets are inhabited. I'm not going to answer what I came up with, because it's a plot point in the books. So I'll give you a RAFO card, but that's the question to ask yourself.
That wasn't my question! My question was, in the Cognitive Realm, with the gap between planets...
Oh! Will the gap between planets get larger as more people travel in between it. So, barring things like space stations, there's going to be so few minds in between, that I don't expect space to become larger because of that.
I don't expect it to be a factor, except--barring--there will be possibilities of certain regions popping up.
What Magic The Gathering colors would the Shards introduced in Rhythm of War or after be?
I have to RAFO that for now, because it kind of depends.
But Whimsy is pure red.
Were there highstorms on Roshar before Adonalsium Shattered?
Were there highstorms on Roshar before Adonalsium Shattered? I'm gonna RAFO that. I'm not gonna answer you, because I'm mean. Maybe someday you shall have your answer to this important question.
In the ancient religion with Trell, the god, he had a brother Nalt. Is Nalt in any relation to Nalthis, the planet?
Hehe, that’s a good question. Hmmm. I’m going to RAFO that for now.
It's mentioned that Stormlight in gems will flicker slightly. Is this the Rhythm of Honor?
Good question, RAFO.
Are we going to go to the Horneater Peaks in Stormlight 4?
RAFO.
In the past, you have said... that we've seen a metal that is from a Shard that we know, on Scadrial. You said Wax has seen the influence of a Shard other than Preservation, Ruin, or Harmony, and that the spike that Bleeder was using was a metal from a Shard we know. It seems like there's another Shard influencing Scadrial. Is Trell an extension of that?
Yes.
And is that Odium?
That's a RAFO.
What's up with Mare? Here's my Conspiracy Wall about her.
TL;DR Paalm was Mare. She spent most of Shadows of Self trying to imitate Kelsier.
This one is a RAFO, I'm afraid. As I've said, there are things about Mare I haven't gone into.
Putting aside whether this theory was accurate...
Have you seeded anything else in the books that this level of newspaper-clippings-connected-with-string thinking would be necessary to figure out?
I have put things in like this, but generally I don't think I'm putting in enough foreshadowing for them to be recognized--I'm just working under an assumption on my part, which then reflects in the writing, which then people put together. (Which sometimes surprises me.)
So, I don't generally put in puzzles this complex intentionally to make people figure them out. But the puzzles do end up in the stories, and can be figured out, nonetheless.
Can spren be affected by emotional Allomancy?
That's a RAFO.
In Shadows... did we see a Shardpool? And was it Harmony’s or some other mysterious god who...
So where do you think it is in Shadows?
In one of the newspaper articles.
I am RAFOing that, the whole newspaper article. So the newspaper articles, who knows what’s going on in them. They're tabloid-ish so maybe, maybe--
If Allomancy works once the planet is left, does that mean that the FTL travel will have the vessels carrying a portable Shard? How will the energy of that Shard affect things where they travel to?
You're just going to have to get a real RAFO on that one, 'cause that book is a long ways away.
In one of the prologues to the first book, the assassination of Gavilar, mentions--I don't have the characters name--mentions his bodyguard or the head of his bodyguard being one of the greatest swordsmen in the realm, right? And then we get into Words of Radiance, which has such emphasis on duels. I kept waiting for this guy to come in again. I don't know if Szeth killed him in the assassination?
A conscious decision on my part. I'm going to RAFO it, but not for any good reason. Just a little reason, I might make reference to it, I might not.
Has Kelsier ever physically been on Sel?
RAFO!
If Tien got far enough to swear an oath, what happened to his Cryptic? Elohkar's was stuck on our side and he didn't even finish his oath, was Tien's stuck on our side?
RAFO, I'm afraid.
Does atium have a "side effect", much like how lerasium has a "side effect" in creating Mistborn?
RAFO.
What would happen if an Elantrian burned or flared aluminium? Would they become Reod or a normal person? Or something else?
Like if they got Allomantic powers?
Yeah, like a lerasium [bead] or something.
Okay, yeah, I'm gonna say RAFO, I knew this one was coming.
Is Lift capable of touching other spren?
I'll RAFO that for now. I could wiggle out of that one easily, but I won't. I'll not answer the question you're asking, rather than the one you're not asking.
Related to Kaladin's abilities and their application to medicine, is a Shard-scalpel possible, or does a Sylblade of any kind have to do the whole burning-eyes deadened-limbs thing that Shardblades do?
(actually, I bet this is going to be addressed in the book, unless my memories of lore are insufficient and this is a silly question that is already answered if I look closely enough.)
It's not a silly question--and while it's not answered in the books, the topic (or at least ones similar to it) is discussed. So I'll RAFO for now.
You're in Houston, questions of Oil & Gas and energy sources will be naturally be bandied about.
Naturally.
Is the gasoline on Scadrial a fossil fuel or biodiesel?
Oh. Hmm. Well It's fossil fue... No. What they're using now is mostly biodiesel, I think. It's not something we really talked out.
Ok, we had a whole thread on 17th Shard and even discussed how scientifically fossil fuels could have been put into place during the Catacendre.
Well, fossil fuels are possible, and I don't want to seem like I'm clearly giving credence to those that believe in a Young Earth, but Scadrial is a relatively young planet. Relatively.
Young Earth doesn't bother me, though I know I'm not the majority.
Where on Scadrial is it being produced? No mention of refineries in Elendel or the Roughs.
Where on Scadrial... Well it's... I'm going to have to RAFO that for now. It starts to touch on questions of the future as they will need more fuels for travel and they'll need to look for different sources.
Has Braize always been 9-centric or did it become so because of Odium?
RAFO.
Is Renarin able to use the Surge of Illumination?
RAFO.
Were the Parshendi based on something the Shards had seen before, in the same way the humans (and horses, and chickens) of Roshar were?
RAFO! You're asking the right questions, though.
When Odium says, "We Killed You," who is he referring to?
*Hands RAFO card*
Two days ago, you read the first chapter of Stormlight 4 and Navani has a homesteward there and he has those rings, lots and lot of rings. Is it maybe... he has...
You're gonna ask if he is a Terrisman, right?
Maybe...
Maybe... RAFO.
Would it be possible for someone to store Stormlight in a nicrosil metalmind?
I will RAFO that for now, but you're thinking the way I want you to be thinking.
What is the First Ideal of the Elsecallers?
The First Ideal of all the... all of the Orders is the same. She's actually asking what the Second Ideal is and the answer is actually a RAFO, which means "Read and find out". I will reveal that... when... eventually.
What is the metal used by El when substituting his carapace? Is it just regular steel to make armour or is it something like aluminium, to make him less vulnerable to Shardblades, for example?
RAFO!
Will Kelsier be in Stormlight Archive ever?
That is a read and find out, you know a RAFO? Give her a card.
How does Hoid’s prediction work?
RAFO.
The person who meets the person who gets Epic powers, has he become an Epic?
I have no idea who you're talking about. Plug your ears again guys. Ask it very quietly.
The main character.
David. Has he become an Epic? Well, so, so...that's a RAFO.
If a tribe of singers were to worldhop to Nalthis, and live there for a few generations, would their pure singer offspring begin to be born with Breath?
RAFO. Good question, though. Excellent question!
Did the kandra that's running around on Roshar have a speaking role in Oathbringer?
RAFO!
Does the painting from Nalthis seen by Kaladin appear elsewhere? Will it?
RAFO!
Can you use Hemalurgy to power machinery?
He was initially confused as to what I meant, so I said I got the idea from thinking about FTL travel, and he said that it was a RAFO, but that I was thinking along the right lines, there needs to be a merger between magic and technology.
Everybody talks about steel-steel twinborns. A big topic of discussion. What I'm thinking about, I haven't seen anybody ask, what happens when somebody who's tapping speed, does a steelpush, does the steelpush react in realtime or accelerated time? And the object-- is it like a railgun?
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm surprised that no one's asked me that before. This gets really dangerous really fast... It's RAFO territory, but you are thinking along the right lines.
Is that theory correct where, like, the Heralds are basically, like, reversed now. Kind of going against their thing or...
*laughs* He won't tell us.
I know, I know. That was my question, which I knew you wouldn't *inaudible*.
I just wanna know more what Szeth and the stone is?
You get-- you get a RAFO card. There you go.
Brandon has said that the Ashynite disease-based magic was related with the Old Magic. Did he mean it in a direct way? Like this magic from Ashyn was a branch or a variety of the Old Magic system?
I do have to RAFO this, for the most part. Suffice it to say that the disease magic is related to a symbiotic bond between spren-like Investiture and microorganisms.
Is Marsh a worldhopper? Can he worldhop? Does he have the ability?
Ah, yes, yes.
Will we ever see him do anything on the other worlds?
That's a RAFO. There's your card. But yes, no his Investiture would not prevent him from going offworld.
Could you tell me when the Ghostbloods were founded?
Yeah. I’m gonna RAFO that.
Are there any detrimental side effects to worldhopping, and if so, have we seen/read it in any of your books?
Uh, it depends on what method you're using to worldhop.
And the second half of that question?
And the second part of that is RAFO. *laughter*
What happens when you flare copper?
What happens when you flare copper? Various different things can happen when you flare copper. I'll RAFO that for now. [...] I'll delve into that more, I don't want to delve into it too much right now, you'll find out, probably in Era 3, some of the things that can happen with copper.
1) Will the truth of how Evi really died matter to Dalinar's sons? In other words, is it reasonable to expect Adolin, most notably, will react negatively given he believes his father would have never burned the Rift?
2) Dalinar claims he could forgive Adolin for not being the man he thought he was. Is it reasonable to expect this is easier said than done?
1) It would be reasonable to expect that many people (Adolin foremost among them) will react negatively to the truth--which is indeed contained in Dalinar's book.
2) Yes, I would say that's a reasonable expectation as well.
Thank you for the answer, I much appreciate it. Can I ask if it is reasonable to expect some ramifications with respect to those elements within the next book or if this won't be on topic?
We're getting into RAFO territory, I'm afraid.
One question, two parts: If a double nicrosil Twinborn started Compounding and storing Investiture in a nicrosilmind, could they do something cool by tapping a whole huge bunch at once? And since Scadrialians have both Ruin and Preservation in them, could they store both those qualities in a one nicrosilmind, or would it require two different ones?
Ha. All things regarding Investiture (particularly in regards to Feruchemy) are instant RAFOs at this point, I'm afraid. I've got to save SOME things for future books.
With Hoid, we know that he's got some sort of Lightweaving, Yolen magic. If we're gonna hypothetically say that he bonds with the Cryptic, at the end of Oathbringer. Talking about resonance between magic systems, what are we going to see if he tried the two together? Would they be separate? Or would they form some sort of resonance magic system?
So, I'm gonna go ahead and RAFO that.
Um, Dawnshards. So, they obviously predate the arrival of humanity on Roshar. Are they of Odium? Are they Odious Investiture?
I will RAFO Dawnshards.
Feruchemists that can store Investiture, would they be able to then use that to power Allomancy with say Stormlight?
RAFO.
