Questioner
In The Emperor’s Soul, Forgery allows you to Forge your soul to create a different past. My question is, would on Scadrial burning gold in a controlled way allow you to do something like that?
Brandon Sanderson
Wow, you guys are good. So, they are similar but different. I would say that no, gold is not gonna do this exact thing. They're working from the same fundamental roots, but gold is a lot more bounded in what it can accomplish.
Argent
(paraphrased)
Why can lerasium be burned by anyone in the cosmere, while atium is restricted to a small portion of the population of one planet?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
RAFO.
Questioner
If a Listener were on Scadrial, would they be able to hear Allomantic pulses, like a Seeker?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO
Titan_Arum
If a coinshot were to drop a gold coin of size X or an iron coin of the same size X, would the coin with more mass (the gold coin), under normal circumstances, allow the coinshot to vertically push themselves higher than they could with the coin with less mass (the iron coin)?
Brandon Sanderson
Mass is indeed a factor in anchors.
Kurkistan
Is there- have you come up with a Realmatic explanation for why light isn't affected by time bubbles besides handwavium "please don't burn people with microwaves"?
Brandon Sanderson
Peter's got one for us. 'Cause we were going to do redshift: like the actual original writing for it had redshifts; Peter's like "Dude, you will microwave everybody" I'm like "Oh man". So the handwavium of that: there is a real- there is an actual explanation, but it...
*they move to outside the store*
What's the middle of this question?
Kurkistan
Middle of the question was you were thinking about explaining the Realmatics behind light for time bubbles.
Brandon Sanderson
Oh right, right right right right. I can't because it spoils future books; like that's spoiler for Mistborn... 10?
Kurkistan/Argent
*laughter*
Brandon Sanderson
So... if you count the four Alloys, so really gotta stay away from stuff like that.
Kurkistan/Argent
That's fair/fine.
Kurkistan
So time bubbles... How much control does a bubbler have over the bubble before and after it's cast? Can they just grow and shrink it or...
Brandon Sanderson
Not very much.
Kurkistan
So Wayne could flare his metals make time go faster--
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Kurkistan
But if he'd stopped flaring--
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, but-- they have a bit of control over the speed of it, but once it's up moving it or anything like that, not much. The flaring of it and things like that, yes they can-- it's mostly set when they start.
Kurkistan
But they have some discretion when they start it.
Brandon Sanderson
They do have some discretion, yes.
Lurcher
Can you burn a metal wrapped in another metal, if both are Allomantic? Like, the inner metal, could you just burn that before?
Brandon Sanderson
No, you're gonna have to work your way through the outer one.
Lurcher
And what if it was a non-Allomantic metal? The same?
Brandon Sanderson
It's gonna depend on how thick it is, and stuff. But I would say, if you wrap it in a non-Allomantic metal, that's not good for getting to the metal. It's viable, but it just depends on how thick it is, and things like that. Like, sometimes things have been plated to keep the access to the metal off, but usually you would want to do that in aluminum, to make sure.
otomo
(paraphrased)
I asked to confirm whether after Sazed's Ascension if there were any more atium or malatium Mistings.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
There are no more, in that way...
otomo
(paraphrased)
In that way, huh?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
*ominous look*
Brandon Sanderson
Burning metals by instinct, by the way, is something I had to add to the book for scenes like this. I had to be able to have characters be able to heal quickly–in a relative sort of way–so that I could keep the pacing where I wanted it. That meant long term, quick healing, if that makes any sense. I made it possible for an Allomancer's body to use metals–particularly pewter and tin–when they needed them.
Questioner
Is there a metal that's the opposite to aluminum, that can store pure Investiture rather than blocking it? And is that metal dragonsteel?
Brandon Sanderson
Innately store it? RAFO! Not Feruchemically? Good question.
Kurkistan
Speaking of interfering, if you shot an aluminum bullet through a time bubble, what would happen?
Brandon Sanderson
Ooooh, that's a good question. I'm gonna RAFO that one. It's an excellent question.
Questioner
If an Allomancer drew Nightblood, would it eat the metals first?
Brandon Sanderson
Only if they were burning it.
Questioner
At the time, otherwise it would go straight through and eat them?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah it would just eat them. Yeah. If they were burning the metals, it would burn through the metal, and he would take the power instead of you gaining whatever ability you were trying to get from it.
Questioner
Who he be able to use the metal power or would he just eat it as...?
Brandon Sanderson
He would just take it as raw Investiture.
Oversleep
Would Mistborn with mixed [Threnodite] blood be able to burn silver? What would happen?
Brandon Sanderson
No, blood line would not change which metals are allomantically viable and which were not. (Sorry.)
Questioner
Can any Allomancer burn atium?
Brandon Sanderson
Can any Allomancer burn atium? Atium, no. Asterisk but no. There is a reason why. But no, they cannot.
mmm_burrito
You snake. I just finished Hero of Ages, and come to find out I'll never know the last 2 metals. Grr.
Brandon Sanderson
Cadmium and Bendalloy are what you're looking for. They create bubbles of warped time around the Allomancer. I will be doing more books in the world, though not with the same characters, and you'll see the other metals.
TheDeathlessHorsie79
Bronze is an alloy of Copper. Maybe the cloud Smokers gives is in actuality the complementary rhythm to nullify the rhythm from the metals they are in close proximity with
Brandon Sanderson
I have to RAFO, I'm afraid, but I like this direction of theorizing.
Atium is the best metal to use for Hemalurgy. Does *burning* atium help you figure out where to put the spikes?
Anything that gets you a glimpse of the Spiritual Realm could help with placing spikes.
Would flaring iron and steel also help?
No, not without additional help.
Questioner
If a nicrosil Ferring and Misting Twinborn burned a mountain of nicrosil, would he become Harmony?
Brandon Sanderson
A mountain?
Questioner
Yeah, like, he burned literally tons--
Brandon Sanderson
No, he would not. It wouldn't work that way.
Titan Arum
Can iron/steelsight lines be used to identify specific metals? If yes, for only savants?
Brandon Sanderson
This is possible. Not just savants.
Does aluminium have any effect on the other Allomantic metals aside from iron/steel and zinc/brass? If yes, does that include god metals and their alloys?
Yes and no.
Brandon Sanderson
Chapter Twenty-Five - Part One
I hope that pewter dragging doesn't seem like something I just pulled out of my hat. I hate it when authors just suddenly come up with new elements of their magic systems. (See my recent article on how to write magic systems for more.) Instead, I find it better when the characters find new ways to apply what they can already do.
This seems to be a natural outgrowth of pewter to me. Plus, I did need a way to get Kelsier and Vin to the battlefield with some manner of speed. In these books, I've found getting people where they need to be at the right time to be one of the most challenging aspects of the series. In book three, I have one character crossing half the continent, then having to run back the other way, just so he can get where he needs to be for the end of the book.
Comatose
What would a fully trained Seeker sense from Nightblood when it is influencing emotions?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO!
William Anderson
Can a Seeker inside a Coppercloud Seek someone out of one?
Brandon Sanderson
It is possible.
William Anderson
What about a Soother instead of a Seeker?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, again possible.
Questioner
What's lerasium?
Brandon Sanderson
That is the bead of metal that Elend finds at the end of Book 2, that Vin finds and gives to Elend.
Questioner
Oh so there were only two and the Lord Ruler kind of left it there?
Brandon Sanderson
There actually were a bunch of them, and the first Mistborn came from people who ate that. The Lord Ruler took one for himself and he left others there to use if he needed them.
Questioner
Cadmium or bendalloy with duralumin or nicrosil?
Brandon Sanderson
That's a RAFO.
BartimaeusTrilogyFan
Can Feruchemists store more than the five ‘traditional’ senses, and does Allomantic tin enhance more than the traditional five senses?
Brandon Sanderson
More is possible.
Questioner
I actually have a weird question. From the Mistborn series it says there are 16 Allomantic metals but then you go into Alloy of Law and the 16 are listed there, minus the atium and another one, so are there really 18 metals?
Brandon Sanderson
Well, you see those two were not really metals. Those were pieces, fragments, of a god.
Questioner
I thought that might be it but the symbols are the same above them from-- the atium symbol is the same as--
Brandon Sanderson
No, it's a different symbol, it might be reversed though.
Questioner
How does electrum work?
Brandon Sanderson
Electrum can see future shadows only as far in the future as is done with atium in the books. They use it to counter atium in that they see their own future shadow fighting, and if they see their shadow get hit by an attack, they know to avoid that attack, and they change their own future. This compounds the future shadows they see, which makes it practically as effective at countering atium as atium itself.
While the scope of an electrum shadow is very limited, it could be useful in many situations. Like if you were playing tennis, you’d be able to look at your shadow and tell if you managed to hit the ball or not, and adjust accordingly. That would still take a lot of practice to master, but it could be very effective.
Oversleep
(paraphrased)
Allomantic strength. There are stronger Allomancers, they can burn metals faster, right?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, they can also squeeze more power out of it. They can use it more efficiently.
Oversleep
(paraphrased)
So there is some loss of power along the way? How do savants work into that?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Savants can use it way more efficiently. They are more Connected to the Shard. Closer to Spiritual Realm.
Questioner
If a Mistborn were to burn a piece of a Shardblade, what would happen?
Brandon Sanderson
This would be hard to make happen, but it would be possible. A Shardblade is going to act as, basically, an alloy of the god metal of Honor and so what would it do? RAFO, but it is possible and it would do something. It would not be inert. It would be Allomanticaly viable.
Dirigible
Can you store....like if there is a Twinborn, who is a gold Allomancer and a duralumin Ferring, would his goldshadow change based on what his Connection is?
Brandon Sanderson
I'm going to RAFO that.
Questioner
And then is there a connection between Aviars, copperclouds, aluminum, and the yellow spren, life sense, seeking?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, yeah all that, there are some relationships there.
Questioner
So they all pretty much would affect each other?
Brandon Sanderson
Ummm, yes, yes.
Questioner
As a physicist I appreciate you being so consistent with your magic systems.
Brandon Sanderson
It is something I try very hard to do, though I do recognize that we do bend a lot of rules. When we were doing the time-based one in this [The Alloy of Law], I'm like, "Oh, boy, redshifts. Oh, no, conservation of energy." We had to do some bending to make it so that the radiation from the light passing out of the time bubble wasn't deadly.
Questioner
Do you have plans to have anything to do with nicrosil and chromium? They seem like they have a lot of potential to them.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, I am planning to do a lot more with nicrosil and chromium in the Mistborn books. You’ll find out a lot about what the Feruchemy of those does.
relient23
(paraphrased)
Are the lines that an Allomancer sees when burning iron or steel are in the Physical Realm, the Spiritual Realm, or the Cognitive Realm.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
It is more Spiritual Realm than anything.
Questioner
Can an Allomancer burn any god metal? Or is it specifically Preservation and Ruin?
Brandon Sanderson
That is actually a RAFO. There's some funkyness going on there.
Is it possible to be a full Feruchemist and a Misting or vice versa, like a lopsided Twinborn?
Possible, yes. Highly unlikely, but possible.
Questioner
Could a Leecher take away stores in a metalmind?
Brandon Sanderson
You’ll have to find out. That’s a RAFO.
Czanos
Would anything interesting happen if an Allomancer Burned a Hemalurgic spike, or a Feruchemist Tapped one?
Brandon Sanderson
Er, well, it’s possible. But you’d have to be burning a Hemalurgic spike that killed you and took your power…
Just like you can’t gain anything by burning a metalmind unless you infused it yourself.
Necarion
Would a Mistborn have to worry about accidentally burning her copper IUD?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes she would, absolutely *laughs*
Questioner
Can Allomancers be anemic?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
So as I was researching all the stuff for trivia, I must say I was-- I became intrigued with the idea of duralumin and bendalloy or cadmium and whether or not it might have something to do with your FTL?
Brandon Sanderson
It's a good theory. That's a really good theory.
Questioner
Would you like to expand on that?
Brandon Sanderson
No, that's it. That's a good theory.
Oversleep
Could you write [sign] the Alcatraz like Alcatraz?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. He signs upside down.
Oversleep
Would tapping Connection increase the steelsight?
Brandon Sanderson
No, probably not, there are arrangements that could make that happen but just tapping it, no.
Harrel Rinehart
If a piece of normal metal is in a box of aluminium can the piece of normal metal be sensed by a Lurcher/Coinshot?
Peter Ahlstrom
No.
Questioner
Can an Allomancer burn metal that is not from Scadrial?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
PrncRny
(paraphrased)
Is an Snapped Allomancer more likely to pass on the Allomantic ability than an UnSnapped one?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Not necessarily.
PrncRny
(paraphrased)
I asked if it was pure genetics, then.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
He initially said yes, then appended that with "not just genetics. there's a Spiritual aspect to it as well."
Dirigible
In Secret History, we see orbs of Connection that Kelsier uses, and it draws lines between him and other objects. If Vin were to, in the Well of Ascension era, use that orb and also pull the mists in, would she be able to steelpush or ironpull on non-metal objects?
Brandon Sanderson
There are ways to steelpush on non-metal objects, but that's not the method.
Dirigible
Atium alloy?
Brandon Sanderson
What do you mean by atium alloy?
Dirigible
Atium-steel alloy, or atium-iron?
Brandon Sanderson
Hmm, we're straying into RAFO territory. Let's just say that it is possible.
Keeper Exile
Would a Coppercloud at all affect how spren act?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Oversleep
Does it matter how fast are the metals burned in relation to Seeking? For example, would a flared metal be easier to Seek? Could duraluminum burned metal be Seeked through coppercloud by regular Seeker?
Brandon Sanderson
Flaring is noticeable to the right Seeker, and strength does correlate as you theorize.
Kayla
Is it possible to use a Steelpush while wearing Shardplate?
After some confusion re: not Pushing on the Plate, but something else.
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. And we… think the mass of the plate would be what determined the force needed, not its (much lighter) effective weight to the bearer.
