Because of Kelsier's status as a Cognitive Shadow we've been wondering what wonky things you can do with him being like that and so-- Hypothetically, purely hypothetically, could a Surgebinder, could somebody form a Nahel bond with him?
Brandon Sanderson
With Kelsier? We'll RAFO that. We will definitely RAFO that for now
JoyBlu
Both Tien and Kaladin are Radiant, you talked about how that wasn't hereditary, and how that was more because of where they were with association. Was it because they were associated with the same person, or the same place?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, Connection influences spren.
JoyBlu
Right, but was the Connection to a person that they were around?
Brandon Sanderson
Connection to people.
JoyBlue
So not necessarily the place where they were?
Brandon Sanderson
Right.
Joyblu
Because my way of thinking it might be with the people is because, like with the Purelake on the Cognitive Realm there would be more spren hanging out there because that was more land, right; so if you spent more time on that you would have more spren around you. So if you're closer to more water, you're closer to more spren.
Brandon Sanderson
That is not an irrelevant observation.
Questioner
What would a Cognitive Shadow see if they saw Szeth?
Brandon Sanderson
If they saw Szeth? They're going to see his soul kinda trailing along behind him. It's gonna be really freaky to them.
Questioner
Did Nightblood cause the Cognitive Anomaly?
Brandon Sanderson
*Hems and haws*
I'll give you a RAFO card.
Schaaschaa
If Dalinar were to deadeye the Stormfather, would highstorms stop or change? Related, were there highstorms on Roshar before the Splintering of Honor?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO, I'll have to think about that.
Winds Alight
(paraphrased)
In SA the Stormfather refers to several people as "Child of Honor", but only Kaladin as "Child of Tanavast". Is there significance to that?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, there is.
szeth-is-my-son-son
Can every Cognitive Shadow be affected by silver?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO! Good question!
So, firstly, is the Cognitive Realm the only way to access the Spiritual Realm from the Physical Realm, and vice versa?
No.
realhitvz
Could you use the Feruchemical ability to store Identity to heal damage done to you in the Cognitive Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
Um... yes, but it's gonna take a roundabout method to make it happen... Yes, but Identity can be very useful for all sorts of things like this.
Oudeis
If a seon were on Roshar, could it still communicate instantly with seons on Sel?
Brandon Sanderson
So, let’s just say the Cognitive Realm is bounded by distance, and the Spiritual Realm is not. So it depends on how that mechanic is working.
Blightsong
Last year I asked you if shadows turn the wrong way in the cognitive realm for a reason, you said to basically think of it like important flavor text. Is this happening because people are being drawn towards the Beyond?
Brandon Sanderson
Um, yea that's part of it. Definitely.

[WoB compilation about spren]
Brandon Sanderson
Hmm. With a casual glance, I see at least one here that I might have been fixated on a question that wasn't actually being asked. I do this occasionally, particularly at signings, where we're going so fast and I think someone is asking something that they're not.
In regards to there being spren bonds before the Last Desolation--there obviously were. (We see Knights Radiant in Dalinar flashbacks that are before the Last Desolation.) I think I was trying to talk my way around a different question, without giving RAFO answers, that I'm not going to get into now.
Another sketchy one on this list is regarding whether the spren call the nightwatcher Mother or if they're calling cultivation Mother. I don't think the text of the books actually implies either way, despite what I said. (Unless I'm forgetting something.) For those in the know, with the Nightwatcher being an analogue of the Stormfather, that implication is there--but I don't want to confirm it either way. You'll get more on the Nightwatcher and Cultivation, and their relationship, in the books.

Hoid uses the term subastral, is that the term for a region of the Cognitive Realm, like Shadesmar is?
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah. It’s like planet but-- That’s his term for the different-- Because Shadesmar is all like one plane.
rani
So wait you’re saying subastral is different?
Brandon Sanderson
No subastral is a region of Shadesmar.
TheOneKEA
(paraphrased)
I asked him if it was possible to enter or exit Shadesmar in interplanetary space.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
He laughed nervously for several seconds with a look that suggested "Uh-oh!" and replied (as best as I can remember):
I would say no. The Cognitive Realm does exist there, but Shadesmar is a special case.
Aurimus
As the Cognitive and Spiritual Realms aren't something that exists in real life, is it safe to say that everything within those Realms are comprised of Investiture?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
Questioner
How is the Cognitive Realm of Nalthis?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, Nalthis. I'm gonna RAFO that. You will see it before too much longer, I hope.
Argent
Spren grant control over surges because surges are perceived as fundamental powers on Roshar. Would other Cognitive beings grant different powers based on what they perceive to be fundamental? Such as electromagnetism is on Earth?
Brandon Sanderson
It is plausible, although this was set up in a specific way.
Argent
By Honor or Adonalsium?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO on that. Set up might be the wrong word. There were seeds that caused this to happen the way it did.
Argent
The Surgebinding thing?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, specifically... Those influenced what people perceived as fundamental forces.
Questioner
Would Kelsier be able to Return to the Physical Realm in the same way that Vasher did?
Brandon Sanderson
No. Mmmm… which time? Let me parse this question. Could a Shard with a great deal of Investiture take his Cognitive Shadow and staple it to a body, or indeed recreate (which is usually what happens) an entirely new body for him? Yes, that could happen. It would need, really, the will of a Shard and the desire to do so, but that could happen.
He couldn’t do it himself, though; because you could also have been asking: “return to the Physical Realm,” pop through; ‘cause Vasher popped through a perpendicualrity to get onto Roshar, which is another way he returned to the Physical Realm. I didn’t think that’s what you were asking, but sometimes, once in a while, you’re asking multiple things at once to be tricksy.
Questioner
Exactly how turbulent is the Cognitive Realm around Sel? Khriss seems to think it's rather difficult [to travel] but how difficult would it be for Hoid to get through?
Brandon Sanderson
How difficult would it be to get through to Sel, how difficult would it be for Hoid. I would say straining his resources and capacity. It is difficult for him. So take that as you will. But it is worth his effort and he has done it numerous times.
Questioner
Will we ever see protagonists ever come back? ...Once they're, like, dead and stuff?
Brandon Sanderson
So, there's a couple rules for people coming back in the cosmere. If you could be revived by CPR, you could be saved. If you can't be revived by CPR, only a direct infusion of Investiture immediately to the soul will turn you into a Cognitive Shadow. Those are your two kind of outs. I'll leave it at that for you, and you can see where it goes from there.
Questioner
Does Stormlight go into the Cognitive Realm during a highstorm?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Questioner
After a highstorm does the Stormfather always appear regardless if someone's watching or not?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes
Narkac
Where does the Stormlight in highstorms come from? Is there like a "rain cycle", but for the Stormlight?
Brandon Sanderson
The Stormlight in the highstorm is transferred from the Spiritual realm through the Stormfather into the highstorm.
Questioner
The Stormfather, has he bonded with anyone else besides Dalinar?
Brandon Sanderson
In the past? Yes.
drzjj
I noticed some interesting things during my re read of Oathbringer after Rhythm of War and I am not sure if they are mistakes or not.
First thing is voices in Dalinar's head. In previous books he could hear Honor's voice (assuming this is indeed Honor) only in visions.
Because obviously Honor is dead and cannot talk to Dalinar for real. In Oathbringer Dalinar suddenly starts to hear this voice even outside of the visions and it's not the Stormfather.
Second thing is warm light that comes from a place beyond. Dalinar always says this light comes from a distant place, but in the final scene of Oathbringer (Dalinar rejects Odium) he can feel this light inside of himself.
So the question is: is this a mistake or was it done intentionally?
And the last thing I notice - Dalinar exhibits aspects of all three shards and he's been literally touched by all of them. Is it important?
Brandon Sanderson
The first one is intentional. Read into that what you will. Though I don't know if you're completely interpreting it right.
This second one is also intentional, and you are reading it correctly.
And yes, Dalinar exhibiting aspects of all three aspects of all three shards is important.

Does the chasm on Sel have a counterpart in the Cognitive Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, it does. But moving around there is really tough…
Questioner
Can holders of Shards give them up voluntarily? If so, what would happen?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes, a Vessel for a Shard of Adonalsium can give up their power if they wish.
As for what would happen...well, there are some variables in there. Kind of like the variables in what happens to a bucket of water if you dump it out. Depends on where it falls, how strong the wind is, what the air is like.
Power dropped like this, if left alone, could end up Splintering and turning into something like spren/seons. It could become something more like the Stormfather--a large, self-aware entity. It could become something like the Dor or many of the Unmade--something proto-aware, but not truly an individual. There are other possibilities as well, depending on lots of factors. (Are sapient beings involved? what is being done with the power--is it concentrated in the Spiritual Realm as normal, or is it being pushed somewhere else?)
Questioner
Do you actually know exactly the map of the whole Cognitive Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
I have one, it's not a really great one yet. Isaac is working on a better one.
KChan
When are we gonna get to see that?
Brandon Sanderson
Mistborn Era 4, far future era.

Are the Cognitive Shadows on Braize the Shades of the Knights Radiant?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
*RAFO card* There you are, there you are!
Dragon13
Is the conduit that seems to be powering the Ire fortress, can that act as a safe passage through the Cognitive Realm of Sel?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Maybe not the way that you're implying, but yes.
Questioner
Why did Hoid in Secret History have to ride on another person to get to the Well, when that person could float on--
Brandon Sanderson
Sooo, what he's floating on is a Cognitive Shadow. It's a spirit, it's not an actual person. He is floating on someone who is--
Questioner
Do we know them?
Brandon Sanderson
You did not know them, don't worry about them. But see, he's using that as a boat because it's easy to sink through the mist. And if you notice, he has to coat his oar with Investiture in order to move him. So yeah, he's floating on a person's soul... It was so much easier with the Pits, but that's because there were boats and things.
danimalod
I just read Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell and loved it. How did the first shade come to be? Are there shades in other worlds? Do shades have bones?
Brandon Sanderson
Shades are what we call "Cognitive Shadows" in the cosmere. They're basically "spren" or "[seons]" created from human souls. (Where Investiture--or magical power--keeps a consciousness alive after it has lost its Physical connection.) Yes, shades all once had bodies.
Think of them like petrified souls, where instead of stone replacing the tissue of a corpse, magical power replaced the parts of a soul that connect that soul to the Three Realms.
WeiryWriter
To what extent are Cognitive shadows the same as the individuals they are shadows of? Do you count them as the same person or are they just a "copy" so to speak? Or is this a discussion for philosophers (which you've said is the case with the cosmere's "far afterlife")?
Brandon Sanderson
I've considered answering this a few times, and have decided I just have to RAFO it. This is a discussion for philosophers, as you've said. It may become a plot point in future books.
Stuart Eliason
If a planet was orbiting a black hole, would time be distorted in the Cognitive Realm in that area the same way?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes. Good question. And in fact, if you could get enough Investiture, it will do the same thing.
Herald
(paraphrased)
Is it possible to reliably deduce what a Shardworld's Cognitive realm will look like if we knew a lot about its Physical realm? For example, mists in Scadrial, spheres in Roshar etc.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes, but it works in odd ways. So it may not work in the logical way that you think.
Herald
(paraphrased)
Why spheres on Roshar? Something related to the highstorms makes more sense, right?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Yes there is a reason for them being spheres. RAFO
Commicommand
Does emotional Allomancy work on animals?
Brandon Sanderson
Emotional Allomancy requires a certain level of sapience.
Phantine
So dolphins, oragutans, mistwraiths and parrots might work?
Brandon Sanderson
I was intentionally vague. :)
A_Shadow
Huh, so that would mean that divine Breath (or just regular Breath?) works in a completely different underlying mechanism than emotional Allomancy in providing that calming effect for animals and children. I had previously thought it was just an overlap in abilities.
Brandon Sanderson
There is an overlap. But it involves playing with Spiritwebs and/or the Cognitive Realm.
Questioner
(paraphrased)
It seems like a movie adaptation would have just constant spren everywhere?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
That's why I made it so that not every use of the emotion causes them-so it wouldn't get too crazy even when I'm writing them. And what's happening is the spren exist on the Cognitive plane, on Shadesmar, so they have to be attracted, they have to be nearby enough to flock to you, so it depends on how common the spren is.
Strumienpola
Are all Cognitive Shadows outside of Threnody afraid of silver?
Brandon Sanderson
Read And Find Out on that one.
Questioner
So, Sel: Investiture has been pushed into the Cognitive Realm. Threnody: Has it seen something similar?
Brandon Sanderson
It has not seen... Okay. Yes, something similar. It would count. Something similar, yes.
Questioner
If that's the case, what would happen if you were to push Investiture into the Physical Realm?
Brandon Sanderson
It generally manifests either as a solid, liquid, or gas
Questioner
I thought about that. I was like, "We've seen that," but it seemed like a concentrated form. What if you did for like a whole Shard?
Brandon Sanderson
That would probably have disastrous effects.
Questioner
That's why I was thinking for Threnody, but if it hasn't been that, then something else happened.
Brandon Sanderson
It hasn't been that. Something else happened.
drabgod
Without necessarily naming the particular Shardworld, could you describe what the Cognitive Realm looks like in a Shardworld other than Roshar? Again, you don't have to say which one in particular, and it could even be a Shardworld we haven't seen before.
Brandon Sanderson
Hmm... There is a place where it's an empty wasteland of near-nothingness.
TurtletheFlsh
What would happen if you created a Lifeless with more Breath then is necessary? Would they be more or completely human or just a Lifeless that's holding more Breath?
Brandon Sanderson
Lifeless with more Breath are an interesting situation. It's quite possible for the BREATH to start taking on a personality, much like a Cognitive Shadow, related to the individual. Whether or not it is actually them, though, is a big question. Note, this doesn't always happen. Often, dumping a lot of Breath in them is like sticking it in an inanimate object with no Command.
Argent
The lake above Elantris... When Raoden goes in the lake above Elantris, he hears a voice. Is that a voice of a Cognitive shadow?
Brandon Sanderson
That's an excellent question.
Argent
Yes it is. *laughter* RAFO?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
The "substance" who compose Shardworlds's Cognitive Realm has not yet a Canon name, Essence would be nice but it may be confusing with the Vorin's Essences therefore he have to make a better choice.
College Advice 12
What does the Cognitive Realm of this world [Lumar] look like? Please tell me it is just normal liquid water.
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. It's a good guess.
Jozomby
In the Nalthis system, with the Cognitive Anomaly, does it orbit the star or is it stationary in space?
Brandon Sanderson
RAFO. Good question.
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
Shadesmar- you can WALK to the other planets. It’s a pretty far ways away (at least days, if not more), but you can go to Shadesmar, walk in the directions where it says "The Realm of the Vapors" and it runs into Scadrial (which is confirmed). In Shadesmar all of that empty space doesn't really have any human interaction, so it doesn't really have an aspect in the cognitive realm, so all of that place gets shortened immensely. Whenever a planet has enough thinking life on it that's it's considering it a planet, it drops into Shadesmar.
Eventually, he’ll come out with a Shadesmar map of the Cosmere, and a Starmap as well.
Questioner
What does the Everstorm look like in the Cognitive Realm. Is the reason you didn't describe it--
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, I'm saving that for another book. So it's a RAFO.
Tell us something new about Cognitive Realm, please :)
You will get plenty in the next Stormlight book. But more than one type of spren live there.
Questioner
In the Cosmere, as space becomes more developed...*inaudible* outer space.
Brandon Sanderson
It's an interesting question that I've had to ponder. Would the space race happen more slowly because there's an alternative, or would it happen more quickly because you know other planets are inhabited. I'm not going to answer what I came up with, because it's a plot point in the books. So I'll give you a RAFO card, but that's the question to ask yourself.
Questioner
That wasn't my question! My question was, in the Cognitive Realm, with the gap between planets...
Brandon Sanderson
Oh! Will the gap between planets get larger as more people travel in between it. So, barring things like space stations, there's going to be so few minds in between, that I don't expect space to become larger because of that.
I don't expect it to be a factor, except--barring--there will be possibilities of certain regions popping up.
Boogalyhu34
Will the cognitive realms of shardworlds be heavily affected by a more widespread knowledge of modern science among its population?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
