Mason Wheeler
(paraphrased)
OK. Now, the Weeping that happens each year on Roshar. Does that occur each time when the 3 moons are in a particular alignment?
Brandon Sanderson
(paraphrased)
No. It's more related to the planet's orbital position than the moons' position.
Questioner
Will we ever get an explanation about the cosmological feasibility of the world [Taldain]?
Brandon Sanderson
Oh, the cosmological feasibility of a tidally locked planet between two stars?
Questioner
We have one of those in our solar system, and it's not very habitable.
Brandon Sanderson
Yeah, *crowd laughs* the nice thing about the cosmere is I can do planets that would not work in a large scale way because I can hang something and say, "This orbit will degrade in two million years, but it was created and placed there," right? Which allows me to create planets that on a geologic timescale are not stable, but are stable on a rise and fall of human civilizations scale. And that's one of the advantages of being in fantasy, is I can go back to that. Like I try to be rule based when I can, but I also have magic and things that can interfere. So the answer is that. *crowd laughs* We know it's-- I mean, I don't think Roshar's moons are stable on a geologic timescale either. I think they're too close. There's a bunch of stuff in the cosmere that is not stable if you look at tens of millions of years, but it's just fine for a million or two years.
Questioner
So I wanted to know if the asteroid belts around some planets are because of Splintering of a Shard there?
Brandon Sanderson
Okay, one more time. If the what?
Questioner
Asteroids belts around some planets.
Brandon Sanderson
Are caused by the Splintering of Shards? So the Splintering of Shards has had cosmological effects; you should not assume that most asteroid belts are caused by the Splintering of a Shard.
Questioner
Yeah, you know most of the planets, I think all of the planets where the Shards were Splintered have asteroid belts. So is it like the physical manifestation of the Splintering?
Brandon Sanderson
You should not assume that all planets that have that are the result of a Splintering of a Shard but the Splintering of a Shard can have such an effect.
Leiyan
Do you know, do the moons orbit the opposite direction of Roshar's rotation?
Brandon Sanderson
I believe they do but I'm not 100% sure.
Leiyan
There's no eclipses as far as I can tell, so the plane of the orbit must be inclined pretty strongly, because there'd be an eclipse every day if there were eclipses...
Brandon Sanderson
We had to fudge that because as you said, if there were any it'd be all the time.
