Hoid and Vasher/Zahel, they haven't been seen on screen together. Have they been together? Have they met?
Brandon Sanderson
Yes.
JoyBlu
Are they aware they are both worldhoppers?
Brandon Sanderson
I wouldn't necessarily go that far.
Hoid and Vasher/Zahel, they haven't been seen on screen together. Have they been together? Have they met?
Yes.
Are they aware they are both worldhoppers?
I wouldn't necessarily go that far.
Could someone who is spiked, not on Scadrial, still talk to the Shards?
Yes. Little asterisk, but yes.
So, the sixteen Shards. Is it possible that there are more than sixteen, yet they do not know of them?
This would be possible but I'll just go ahead and tell you no there aren't. *laughter* That'll stop a lot of theorizing, though it is possible that Shards have been divided and things like this. And so you can call two subsets-- But it's kind of like there are twelve tribes of Israel. They became twelve other tribes of Israel. There were still twelve because two were the sons of one. Yeah, stuff like that.
You see, in a few places, Shards that can read people's minds, or send thoughts to people's minds. What, in other settings, would be called telepathy. Do we have, in any Shardworlds, a magic system where ordinary people have telepathy?
I've actually designed one that I think is interesting, whether I will make that work or not, I'm not sure. But there is a very interesting world, one that i have right now in the Cosmere, that we will see. I try not to canonize these things till I actually write the story. As happened with Silence Divine, where people have been for six years, "When are you going to write this story?" Because I wrote one chapter of it.
But yes, I do have something that works that way.
Is the reason that the Fused have access to unlimited Voidlight because Odium is alive, and did the Radiants have that sort of access [to Stormlight] when Honor was alive?
Not exactly... They do not have access to unlimited Voidlight, how about that.
What would it take for a member of the Seventeenth Shard Shard to convert over to a member of the Ghostbloods?
Oh, the Ghostbloods would actively recruit from them. So, I think it would not be terribly difficult. It 's gonna depend on which kind of Seventeenth Sharder. Because there are a lot of non-field-agent Seventeenth Sharders, which would be less interesting. Field agents, they would actively recruit.
In The Stormlight Archive, do corrupted spren act differently in fabrials?
Yes. Excellent question!
The metal of Shardblades. Cultivationspren versus honorspren, for example. Are they different metals?
No, but good question.
Are all orders the same alloy, essentially?
Yes. There's a little asterisk on there, but not in the way you're asking... You could call those all the same alloy. Because the mixture to different spren is different, I think that you could argue that each one is its own alloy.
So, different proportions of tanavastium?
Yes, but it doesn't quite work that way with these magics, right? I'm going to say that's up to the individual cosmerologist who is in the world, the arcanist, defining it. You would be able to find enough differences to legitimately call them different alloys if you wanted to.
Would you say different ratios of the same two metals?
Yes. They are not going to have a third one in them, if that's what you're asking. But it doesn't quite work that way. Like, if you were going to take brass, you could measure the exact percentage. In this case, it is a thing; it's not like you could divide it up and split them apart, because they are a thing. And that thing would be called one thing.
But you won't say what that thing is called?
No, I won't say what that thing is called. But I think you and the 17th Sharders and folks that are dividing them would prefer to call them ten different things, and I think their nomenclature would be relevant.
You mentioned White Sand Volume 3. Do we have a release date for that?
We do not have a release date but the script is done. We like the script. We've fixed slatrification, we hope. The ending is much improved over the novel in our humble opinions.
You published that as part of Arcanum Unbounded--
Just a sample. If you want to read the whole prose edition, just sign up for the newsletter. It sends you a link to download it. Or you can just ask from the 17th Shard. I let them distribute that. The ending of that has one really good element and one really bad element, and we took out the bad element and focused on the good element. I think it really kinda came together.
How do the spren in Shadesmar feel about fabrials? Are they mad that people are trapping spren?
Let's say there's a wide variety of emotions, but the general response would not be favorable.
The second set of Stormlight books, [six] through ten, will that-- will those be more focused on the Heralds' point of view, is that the idea?
Yeah, so Taln and Ash, who are both Heralds, are going to be main characters, and they'll each get books dedicated to them. The characters who survive the first five will still be main characters as well, but it's gonna turn more on what happened with the Heralds and things like that. The first five are turning more on what happened with the Knights Radiant and then the last five are more what happened with the Heralds... 'Cause we'll get flashbacks to the time of the Dawnsingers and things like that.
The missing number of Shardblades. I just want to confirm that, when the Blades were abandoned, that all of them stayed in the Physical Realm. My question is, did some just evaporate?
Ahh, good question. They did not evaporate.
Regarding Dysian Aimians. The cremlings that make them up are spread about in a large area--
They can lose touch if the distance is too far. They can lose contact with the mind of the whole thing.
Would their Cognitive aspect be affected by that?
Yes it would be. I'll just leave it there, but yes.
In several instances of the highstorms, several characters mention seeing large creatures walking in the highstorms; they don't seem to be super fazed by this. Do they know these creatures exist, is it part of their lore?
Yes. But you've got to also remember that people who are out in highstorms, they expect it to be... they expect to see odd things. When you're out in a highstorm, it does not faze you in the same way that if you go to a horror movie, you expect something horrific to happen.
Do they have a name for said creatures?
There are names in various parts of the lore, but there is no one name.
Could you give us one of them?
No.
Is Yaalani a character in any other stories?
Right now, no. Good question.
Does not seem like a Eelakin name. And there are people in Stormlight who seem to have aviar.
Yeah. People in Stormlight do have aviar. That has happened. But let's just say, during Stormlight era, getting things on or off of First of the Sun is really hard.
What would happen if Hoid held Nightblood?
Uh, Hoid would not do that. Hoid would stay very far away.
Not even hold it??
He would stay really far away. There are very few things in the Cosmere that Hoid is afraid of, and Nightblood is one of them.
I thought he'd be afraid of the blade end.
So let's just say if very, very, very few things in the Cosmere had a chance of destroying you, you wouldn't even pick one up. You'd try to be in a different room entirely.
*Whispering about Nightblood being able to destroy Hoid*
I didn't say, I said theoretically. I said "had a chance of", I did not confirm. Hoid doesn't know. But there's a chance, and so he is not going to risk that.
Is there a limit to hordeling size? Like what the size of one is?
Yes.
Should I be worried about whitespines being a hordeling?
They are not a hordeling.
So what's the size limit?
Fist-sized is about how big they get.
And how many can you have? For one.
Lots. More than you have seen on screen.
Can a metalmind be made into a sentient object?
It's already got Investiture in it? Yes.
Would you be willing to share the failed process that Hoid used to attempt to become an Elantrian?
No.
How about something related to Emperor's Soul?
I had a really good idea for a sequel earlier this year, but I don't know if I'll ever do it. I don't want to Lucas it. I don't want to take something that works so well on its own, and then make something that makes it not work as well on its own. I might do it, I might not.
In the Death Rattle, "In the storm I awaken, falling, spinning, grieving," have we seen it on screen?
Not yet.
Wit states, "Some men as they age, grow wiser. I am not one of those, for wisdom and I have always been at cross-purpose, and I have yet to learn the tongue in which she speaks." Is Hoid referring to wisdom as a concept?
*Sly smile* RAFO.
You have said the fandom puts too much emphasis on the Lord Ruler's children. Is that because the Lord Ruler suppressed his ability to pass on his abilities to them?
No.
Brandon, that makes no sense. What? Now I'm even more upset. It's actually my fault, 'cause I keep telling people that the Lord Ruler's kids should be important, so you can blame me.
People can be important and not be cosmere-relevant.
Yeah, but they'd be like super-powerful Mistborn!
Yes, who died nine hundred years ago!
But he spent so much time getting Feruchemy away from Allomancy!
Yeah, that's true.
If an Awakener with Perfect Invocation turns something white, can they or another Awakener then use the white thing back to gray, back to white.
I actually thought about this. My answer ended up being a no.
Can you give a little explanation why?
I will delve into it more as I delve into the nature of color and why it's relevant to multiple magics in the cosmere. So it's a RAFO.
I'm curious, you mentioned at the Legion release that the Fused were after the spren that Hoid bonded. Was there a specific reason why they wanted that spren? Or was it just because [it was] the enemy?
I will say they would have done that for another spren in that situation.
Any other spren?
Not any other spren; but there wasn't something uniquely identifying about that spren that they were hunting.
They wouldn't have done it for any spren, but there were other spren they had done it for?
Yes.
Do the people on Ashyn know about Roshar?
Some do.
Is there a group on Taldain that's tied to Autonomy? Directly, like working for Autonomy? I'm after sand mages versus...
I would say yes. Though there is some wiggle room in that question, I would say yes. I wouldn't canonize it. I would call it Word of Brandon canonized. Until it appears in the books, it's not super canon.
Stormlight, when you hold it, gives a sense of immediate urgency or movement. Does Voidlight have a similar emotional impact?
Yes.
Is it the same as the urgency, or is it something different?
Something different.
What is it?
RAFO. Good question.
What is the opposite of Stormlight called?
Some would argue voidlight is the opposite.
Does every Shard, of divinity so to speak, have a metal associated to it?
They all have at least one.
Is the gold blade that Odium has, his equivalent of an Honorblade?
Not quite.
Are you going to add space whales to the cosmere?
There will be things like that, but they won't actually be whales.
