Location of Shardpools: are they determined by the Shard, by the planet, or something else?
RAFO. *laughter* RAFO. We end on a RAFO.
Is it possible to make a perpendicularity large enough that you can move large groups of people through?
Yes.
Or a spaceship?
Yes.
Are there one or two Shardpools [Perpendicularities] on Scadrial?
RAFO.
Do shardpools grant, basically, easier access into the Cognitive or Spiritual Realm--
Yes.
What would happen if Nightblood was drawn inside of a perpendicularity?
It depends on the perpendicularity. It has a good chance of collapsing it.
As you've stated that the magic of First of the Sun is natural and independent of any particular Shard, what is the nature of the pool on Patji? Is it also a natural manifestation of magic, a perpendicularity, or simply a pool like any other?
It's a natural manifestation, but on a much smaller scale than you might find on other worlds.
Does Hoid go to the same place the Elantrians are going?
Yes.
Was the Trust in [Hero of Ages] a perpendicularity?
So... No. Asterisk.
Does she use the Shardpools to get between various worlds.
The Shardpools are the primary method that most people use to get between worlds.
<Why AonDor is not used around Shardpool? Was it a cultural thing or...?>
There are more than cultural reasons.
Can you tell us anything about perpendicularities?
Can I tell you anything about perpendicularities? No. *laughter*
He RAFO'd any questions about where the Shardpools [Perpendicularities] are.
Is the liquid in the Well of Ascension Invested mercury? What is the chemical composition of lerasium + atium?
No.
RAFO!
Both times when Kaladin has had to survive a Highstorm outside, he finds himself in an area of unnatural calm. Is the eye of the Highstorm not entirely in the physical realm? I've had this feeling that the calm area pulls people into Shadesmar, at least a little...
This is not 100% physical realm.
In Secret History, Nazh briefly mentioned that there's requirements or conditions to become a Cognitive Shadow. Can you tell us one of those?
Uh, lots of Investiture. Is one way. As a certain person discovered.
If that person were to not have entered Preservation's pool, it still would have given the same result?
If they had not, they would be gone.
I wasn't clear. If they had done a different pool, not Preservation's.
Oh, if they had been able to Invest themselves heavily, then they could have stuck around, yes. That wasn't Preservation's pool, that was more a function of--dipping themselves, pulling an Achilles inside of a Shardpool when you are dead, turned out to work. It's not the only way, not everyone on... Threnody, for instance, is heavily Invested.
What about [Nightblood] compared to a Shardpool?
Nightblood compared to a Shardpool? Depends on the Pool.
Do any of the worldhoppers that we've met so far-- Do they all just use this sort of perpendicularity to travel?
Perpendicularity is the primary way to get between planets.
But are we going to get a conventional inter-planetary travel, like based on Allomancy maybe?
You have seen conventional inter-planetary travel in Arcanum Unbounded, in the story Sixth of the Dusk, which takes place many hundreds of years after most of the stories in the cosmere. So yes.
Ok so that's where it's--
Yeah there's actually space travel involved in that story but not from the main characters, they just reference them, but yes.
Hoid went through Cultivation's Shardpool to get to Roshar as opposed to Honor's. Yet, he notes he never got along well with Cultivation. Why did he choose her Shardpool rather than Honor's?
You're making assumptions!
Is it possible that it is Honor's?
It's possible.
Why does Devotion's Shardpool act so differently from Preservation's?
For similar reasons to why the Dor acts so differently from Preservation's essence...
Brandon said this is the first confirmation of a second Shardpool on Sel when he signed my book.
There is a second Shardpool.
So, Hoid says he couldn't use the Pits anymore, but couldn't he have used the Trust, with a lot of atium all together? Would that have not formed a Perpendicularity?
No. There's a reason for that.
If a Shard were to divest itself from a planet, would the perpendicularity there disappear?
Normally the Shardpool would cease to exist, but there are circumstances that could prevent the Shardpool from disappearing.
So I was reading the Wheel of Time and in the first one when they get to the saidin and saidar, the pools—they're very similar to Shardpools.
Yes, and that is something that he kind of dropped. The Eye of the World is just like pure saidin, and I would be surprised if that weren't an unconscious influence on me. I didn't think of it when I was coming up with these but that's definitely way back in my brain when I was creating these.
I guess... At what point or which book will Sixth of the Dusk eventually tie in to?
So... Heh...
And if that is unanswerable, then how many years until that book comes out?
It's not unanswerable, but it's a ways off. The problem is that's a weird planet, and visiting it from Shadesmar is-- it just-- in the Cosmere Collection I'll talk about that, okay? It's a weird planet, and getting to it is interesting.
Okay...
There's no Shard in residence, but there's a Shardpool. But it's on... one of the most dangerous places... that exists. And so, let's just say it's not going to be relevant until you can regularly travel there somehow that doesn't involve popping up into a giant death trap.
Okay, follow-up question though. How many people have tried to pop up, only to find out it was a death trap?
Go ahead and read what Khriss has to say about it.
If Dalinar summoned his perpendicularity during a highstorm, while the perpendicularity was open, would the areas that the highstorm was over not have spheres become Invested/full of Stormlight?
RAFO!
What would happen if Nightblood cut into a Shardpool?
Um, well I'm going to RAFO that for sure.
Is the Well of Ascension Preservation’s Perpendicularity? Or at least related to it (i.e. one is in the Physical Realm but the other is in the Cognitive but are still essentially different aspects of the same “thing”)?
You're on the right track.
