I asked him if Wit was always gonna tell Kaladin a story in every book.
Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)
Wit will always tell someone a story, but it won't always be Kal.

I asked him if Wit was always gonna tell Kaladin a story in every book.
Wit will always tell someone a story, but it won't always be Kal.
Aluminum in the cosmere cannot be Invested or generally affected by Investiture processes. The exception to this however is the Metallic Arts where aluminum can be burned, turned into a metalmind, or charged with Hemalurgy. Is this due to an exception in the normally Investiture-proof properties of aluminum specifically for the Metallic Arts? If so, what kind of Connection is there between the Metallic Arts and aluminum which allows this to occur?
RAFO
My brother and I have been debating about Hoid and how he got his abilities. We have a couple theories. One of them is Hemalurgy. The other has to do with the portals into the worlds themselves, because the birds in Sixth of Dusk--
Ok, he doesn't have Hemalurgy right now. He has powers that predate the Shattering of Adonalsium. Not all of his powers predate, but he does have powers that predate.
Ok, so I was wrong on both counts then. Am I wrong on both counts?
I'm not saying that, I'm saying that he does have powers that predate but he has also gained powers since.
Did the original Shardholders know what Shards they were grabbing?
Another RAFO. Sorry. You're asking really good questions. Really good questions.
I know that with Harmony, he has difficulty interacting because he holds two Shards. Did Adonalsium, since he had all these other personality traits, also have issues directly interfering?
A RAFO! Good question. I've never been asked that question before.
Are any of the Lord Ruler's descendants alive during Era 1?
RAFO. A lot of people have asked that. The descendants of the Lord Ruler only are things I've confirmed in Words of Brandon, they are not confirmed in book. RAFO. They did exist, he has had progeny.
Have we seen the new Shardworld yet? ...Obrodai?
RAFO.
Felt told Dalinar that the Nightwatcher doesn't like to talk to foreigners. If he had the opportunity to talk to the Nightwatcher, what would he ask for?
*Excited* I would have to think about it so I'm going to give you a RAFO. I'd have to consider actually what he really, really wants.
If Nightblood were out of its scabbard and then you hit someone who is wearing a Shardplate, what would happen?
You will find that out in the books eventually, so that's a RAFO.
What can you tell us about Vax right now?
About who?
V-A-X
Not much.
During his conversation with Shallan, Wit said that, "Failure is the mark of a life well lived," and I'm glad that you shared that because this question has been on my mind a lot, and he says, "And in turn the the only way to live without failure is to be of no use to anyone." Is there anything Hoid has failed at that we haven't seen on screen that you would be willing to share?
There are certain people he thought he was going to be able to help who ended up not surviving.
Can someone get hold of the Shard of Ambition?
RAFO.
I've been listening to the Graphic Audio The Hero of Ages and just got to the point where Vin meets with Slowswift. While the meeting itself revealed nothing knew, the events after it made me wonder about something. When Vin leaves Slowswift, she burns her bronze to check whether the informant is an Allomancer, and then heads off to meet with Hoid - where, of course, something makes her turn away. Was she still burning bronze at that time? Was Hoid maybe manipulating Investiture in a way unfamiliar to Vin, so her bronze alerted her of something, but because it was such a foreign experience to her, she didn't recognize it for what it was?
I have to RAFO this one. It's been hard not to spill the beans here, as it's such a small thing, but it has important ramifications. You will have an answer eventually, I promise.
Should the fact that the Aons in the Hoid/Riina painting are missing the chasm line be taken as canonical? If so, is this because of whatever method they are using to perform AonDor outside Sel? Or because of post-Elantris changes to Sel?
We let Howard pick what he wanted to illustrate, and then send illustrations in. And originally, he just did a whole bunch of weird, arcane symbols. And I’m like, “No, you need to actually use Aons in this art.” But we let him just kind of pick the Aons. You should not consider that art to necessarily be… Imagine that art to be somebody on Silverlight painting a picture of a story they heard. That art can be in-universe. (In fact, I believe that I would consider it in-universe.) But somebody painted it, and they just used whatever pictures of Aons they had sitting around, like Howard did. In other words, don’t be looking at those Aons as actual representations of how you would program in AonDor, how about that. And don’t read too much into that.
By the time of Tress, stories from things happening around the cosmere, and stories that Hoid tells, have become of interest to some people, and because of that it’s plausible that there could even end up being some sort of book written where it’s like, “Hey, he told me this story. I’m writing it down for the rest of you guys to read.” I’m not saying that’s what Tress actually is; obviously, we have the audience for Tress. I’m just saying, you can imagine world of people doing Hoid fanart.
Does Hoid have fans?
Yes, by that point in history Hoid does. He has far more detractors, but…
Is there an in-universe Hoid fan club?
Depends on what you call people who are fully aware of who he is and what he is. I would say yes. I mean, the royals in our world have fans. There’s fans of the royals, there’s fans of equivalent, just people who are known throughout. And he is a figure in a lot of peoples’ mythology and religion. Would you call the Horneaters Hoid fans? Because they have legends stretching back thousands of years to him as a trickster god, to the point that Rock is fully able to recognize him (not when he’s in his Wit persona, at least not at first).
Prior to Words of Radiance, when did Wit last get a hug?
It had been a long time.
When are we gonna find out who Luthadel was named after?
RAFO!
So, in the last battle, Jasnah has some pretty interesting armor. Does she already have her Shardplate?
RAFO!
Have we seen anyone use Connection to become immortal?
RAFO.
Hoid is not capable of hurting anyone, but in Way of Kings we see him wearing a side-sword, is that simply for show?
That's just for show. He is going to do that again in the next book. It's symbolic.
If Khriss were to describe the Cognitive Anomaly to another Silverlight scholar, how would she do so?
She would RAFO you.
And then, is the Cognitive Anomaly either one of Nalthis's lagrange points or that another RAFO?
It's a RAFO. Everything about the Cognitive Anomaly is a RAFO. I'm sorry.
It was worth a shot.
It is an anomaly and that is all we're saying.
I was thinking about some assumptions I have made. Are you going to write Hoid's series in first person?
I have tried it both ways in test scenes, and am undecided, but leaning toward first person.
I had a question regarding the sixteen Shards... If they are, or when they are reformed to Adonalsium, will it have to be one person holding all sixteen Shards?
That's a RAFO. I'm gonna RAFO that partially because there's not even-- who knows if it can all be recombined.
First of all, Lord Ruler had his Lerasium beads. Did he use them for feruchemy?
The Lord Ruler, that's an excellent question, I'm not answer that one.
Will you answer if Hoid used it for Feruchemy?
His bead, he originally got it because he wanted to become an Allomancer.
Exactly how turbulent is the Cognitive Realm around Sel? Khriss seems to think it's rather difficult [to travel] but how difficult would it be for Hoid to get through?
How difficult would it be to get through to Sel, how difficult would it be for Hoid. I would say straining his resources and capacity. It is difficult for him. So take that as you will. But it is worth his effort and he has done it numerous times.
He RAFO'd any questions about where the Shardpools [Perpendicularities] are.
Was Jezrien sent to Braize when Moash killed him? Or is he gone?
RAFO.
Do all the original Shard holders come from the same planet? Were there world hoppers prior to the shattering?
RAFO (sorry.)
Does Hoid have all the abilities of the planets he's visited?
Not yet.
Are there any underwater societies or cities on Roshar?
That will be a RAFO. *slides card across table*
Are we going to see any chapters that are expressly Hoid now that he is becoming more and more important?
You have seen two. Are you going to see more? Yes. I would say that if you look at the structure of the first two Stormlight books, you will find several themes and those themes are likely to be repeated in future books. And Hoid does like having the last word. *laughter*
If someone created another Awakened sword, just like Nightblood, with the same process, and then brought it to fight Nightblood the same way, would they destroy each other?
RAFO!
Has Hoid ever submitted a painting to the Court of Gods?
Hoid has... potentially submitted a painting. *group laughs* That's something he would do. But I have to say that as, "Brandon says that's something he would do. And 'sure.'" But that's not out of the notes or anything.
What does First of the Sun look like on the Cognitive Realm? I think it’s a whole bunch of grubs, or worms.
*laughs* That's read and find out. C’mon you know I’m not gonna reveal Cognitive Realm on the other ones! You know I am keeping that one only in my head.
Hoid likes to be in interesting places. What was so interesting about the Yomen/Joshin wedding that he had to be there?
In that case, he went to congratulate friends. Not everything is about large-scale cosmere problems.
Is there anything you are willing to say about how he befriended them?
Afraid not.
What metal is Nightblood made out of?
Uh, RAFO.
Is Hoid real, or is he just a fantasy form.
Is Hoid real? Hoid is real in the books.
In the books, yes. So the characters are not hallucinating him.
They're not hallucinating him. We're not pulling a Fight Club or anything on you.
When did Lift meet Hoid? *inaudible*
Lift met Hoid in between the visit to the Nightwatcher and her first <interlude>.
I don't know what you can or cannot tell me but I read a comment that Hoid is your favorite character, I don't know what you can say about that.
Hoid is definitely a favorite of mine. Picking a favorite character is like trying to pick a favorite child, It's just not productive. Robert Jordan always answered this question by saying "My favorite is the one that I am writing right now" and so-- But yes, Hoid is the character-- one of the very first characters I came up with, and he travels through almost all of my books. So you can watch for him.
Did Lightday exist before humans arrived at Roshar exactly as it is now, a day without rain in the middle of every other Weeping?
Hm. I'll RAFO this, as I might flashback to this time in the second half of The Stormlight Archive.
Is Hoid's real name Cephandrius?
No, but it is one of his earliest aliases.
How does one become an Herald? And is there any way for a someone else to take up the mantle of a Herald?
RAFO
When Nightblood killed the Fused, are those Fused souls retrievable?
RAFO.
Trellium could be Hemalurgy-viable without Trell messing with magic?
Yeah, I'll go ahead and give you [a RAFO card].
I've read a little bit of Oathbringer and I've been wondering-- is Oroden going to play a bigger role in future installments [of Stormlight]?
Possibly.
Is it kind of a RAFO?
It is kind of a RAFO.
Are the Hemalurgic constructs in Shadows of Self as twisted as they are because... something was spiked out of them?
Okay the Hemalurgic...
Or something spiked into them?
We're talking about who?
The Hemalurgic constructs in the catacombs.
There's something spiked into them.
Is there anything spiked out of them? Making them more feral?
That's a RAFO, but-- Let's just say this it's a RAFO with the star of "Nobody knows how spike someone without killing them right now." So it's a "Most likely, just spikes in."
So that scene in Warbreaker when Hoid is doing the storytelling with sand, was he doing--
There is indeed some sand in there.
Is it sand mastery though?
There may indeed be, not everything he's doing is sand mastery, but there may indeed be some things involved in that.
What about a person makes a Ryshadium choose them? And why are so many in Dalinar’s family…
I will talk about that eventually. That is a RAFO.
What was the name of Ambition's Vessel?
RAFO.
In the flashback [of Words of Radiance] with Shallan meeting Hoid, Hoid pours something from a pouch into his cup and drinks it. Are these Allomantic metal shavings?
His answer was that there was something indeed significant about what Hoid placed in the cup, but that it was not necessarily Allomantic shavings. He wouldn't tell me what it specifically was and gave me a R.A.F.O. card.
I know about Harmony but is it possible for like two Shards to procreate and make a brand new Shard?
That is a Read And Find Out. Assume I'm not hiding too much from you in that realm, but there will be some fiddly bits as we go further in the cosmere about stuff like that.
