Are the Heralds from Roshar originally?
RAFO.
If a [Vessel] were to hold Nightblood, who would give up first?
RAFO.
There's a WoB on Theoryland that if Hoid was tempted by a Shard it'd be Endowment. Why is that?
There's a word on Theoryland that if he was tempted by a shard it'd be Endowment? Things in his past, that make sense. Will make sense once you know him more.
Will Scadrial actually develop internet?
Um... We will see, won't we?
Along the lines of chromium, according to the new Hemalurgy table, they "might steal destiny." Is destiny Fortune, or is it something new?
RAFO.
Who is going to be the antagonist for Stormlight Archive 4?
I can't answer that without giving spoilers, so you get a RAFO.
From Shadows of Self, you just sort of name Hoid. Is he just not caring anymore, or is it just space in the book?
In Alloy [of Law], he wasn't really interested. He showed up only for a wedding. By this [Shadows of Self], he's noticed something else is happening on-world, so he's come back to investigate, but he's not really relevant. You will see him taking a larger role as he becomes more interested in what's happening on-planet. His level of involvement is kind of directly tied to how interested he is in what's going on.
Hoid, in the Liar of Partinel sample chapters, is referred to as a Jesk. Is this related to the Jesker Mysteries religion in Elantris?
No. Good question.
Khriss mentions in the Ars Arcanum that her research suggests another set of abilities more esoteric than the [Voidbindings]. You have said before that the only magic we haven't really seen is Voidbinding, but you have also said that no one has used Cultivation magic on-screen (not counting boons and curses). Is this other set of esoteric abilities Cultivation's magic, and is it called Lifebinding?
RAFO! What a great question! What an excellent question.
Remember that when I originally conceived The Stormlight Archive, I was thinking of thirty magic systems. And I decided that that was instead three groups of ten, and I wasn't going to call it thirty magic systems. And indeed, that's even vague, because are fabrials their own magic system? What is going on? But anyway, who knows. RAFO!
The quote that Dalinar says at the end [of Oathbringer]. "I am Unity." Is that something that happened specifically because Honor is dead, and, for all these different reasons, that was able to happen? Also Odium said that he had Ascended. He wasn't supposed to Ascend, but he did...
I am totally RAFOing all that stuff; I knew people were gonna ask about it. You're just gonna have to wait and find out.
I think the Ghostbloods and the Set are related?
I will RAFO that; but I will give you a card.
What colors are the Shards Preservation and Ruin Associated with?
RAFO!
So if you burn duralumin at the same time as the metal that speeds up time, meaning stuff flows faster outside, would you basically warp into the future a long ways?
That's an excellent question.
I'm so sure! I'm so sureā¦
And I am not going to answer that question yet, because I don't... Because you are asking questions that they are going to be trying to answer in like five more books. So telling you right now would give spoilers for books way too far ahead in the future.
Did pre-Shattering people on Yolen swear by the God Beyond?
RAFO
Will you give us a spoiler without context for the next Stormlight book?
Let's see if I can think of one. This is usually pretty hard for me. Let's see... Wit's very annoyed. He often is.
This is just from our discussion earlier. So Taravangianā¦ He asks for two things. The capacity to stop what is coming and the capacity to save humankind. And then he gets this weird thing to happen. Is the intelligence and empathy thing because both of those things can't come true at the same time?
That's an excellent question. RAFO!
Let me ask a parallel to that. Are those-- Does the Nightwatcher perceive those as the same boon or two parallel boons?
RAFO!
Hoid says he would watch Roshar burn if it meant his goals were achieved. Would Hoid go so far as to kill to achieve these goals? Can you give a hint about what his goals are?
Yes, Hoid would kill--if he were able to make it happen--to achieve his goals. His goals are super secret. Some you would agree with. Some, maybe not.
Was aluminum around before Adonalsium was Shattered?
RAFO.
What are the basic requirements for a chalking to function in the Rithmatist world?
I'm going to RAFO that because I'm working on the second book right now and I don't want to-- Yeah.
I was wondering, how many pieces of different Shards does Hoid have to collect before he is considered Ascended?
You know that's even a little bit false, uh-- not begging the question. Whichever logic fallacy is assuming that he could. Or, you are assuming that he could. Who knows if it's even possible, or anything like that.
Are the Heralds originally from Roshar?
RAFO.
[questions being asked on behalf of Alyx, a.k.a. FeatherWriter] About Renarin's Surgebinding. Are [his visions] influenced by Voidbinding instead of Surgebinding?
That's a RAFO.
And then if they are influenced by Odium the way that Dalinar's are influenced by Honor.
That's a RAFO. I'm not going to talk about stuff like that! I have dropped some very blatant hints, and that is enough for me right now.
I asked pretty much the same thing last time, and you pointed me to a certain page. Can I tell her what the page was?
Yes. There are certain things going on with him that I feel are very blatant. I think he [Argent] is going to point them out to you.
Stormfather is the spren of the storm. What is the Nightwatcher the spren of?
RAFO.
Did Honor and Cultivation interact with Odium when he first came in a neutral way or was it immediately an all out conflict?
RAFO.
With The Bands of Mourning, now that we understand flight with potassium, or whatever alkali metal that actually was... So is that part of where we’re starting with the Faster Than Light travel? Something along those lines with potassium and maybe like--
I’m not going to tell you, but this is the bridge into the next Era, which the Era beyond will be FTL, but this sort of stuff needed to happen first.
Right, right exactly and the good stuff and the technology trying to get them up to speed and plus with Kelsier going to that other realm and the glimpse of Sel and stuff.
Yep, yep, there will be so much fun stuff in the next series.
I was wondering if, at the Recreance, the Radiant were deliberately trying to put Shardblades in the hands of non-Radiants? Since they left them all outside a military base.
RAFO.
Can you share any abilities that Hoid has accrued so far in the books, does he-- with him taking the bead, I can't even pronounce the L-word...
Yes, lerasium, he is indeed an Allomancer. So. That has happened. I haven't confirmed much else, but he does have that.
In Shadows of Silence, there's another guy named Red in that one, so that's our third guy named Red. Because we have Shallan's groupie, and then we have the guy in Mistborn that's named Red. So , there's three different ones named Red. Is that a coincidence? Or is that intentional?
RAFO.
So, will Hoid and Frost continue their letter correspondence in Stormlight 3?
RAFO
How did Odium's people know that Taravangian stole the Honorblade?
I'll RAFO that.
Can you tell something about Vax? Shardworld?
No, I can't tell you anything about that. But I can give you a card [RAFO] for not telling you anything about Vax; they're very interested in Vax, everybody's interested in Vax.
But I stayed very close-lipped on Vax.
Nicrosil Feruchemy stores Investiture. Would a Nicrosil Compounder be able to gain Investiture up to the power of a Shard by infinitely Compounding?
I talk a lot about that in an upcoming Mistborn book. So that’s a RAFO. The reading is coming. I will explain what it does.
Do all Epics' weaknesses come from things in their past?
RAFO.
Can you confirm if it's possible to reform Dominion by uniting the world please?
RAFO.
Why is Hoid’s color aura from his Breaths not noticed by anyone on Roshar? Are the characters just not used to noticing that sort of thing, or does he not have one?
There are a mixture of reasons. Not the least is Hoid's control over Investiture.
Would someone with Breath be able to notice his aura on Roshar? E.g. Vasher?
Various methods of detecting Investiture would still work, depending on how good a job Hoid is doing of suppressing his.
Could you create a fabrial capable of showing past events using a Radiant spren and a gold cage?
RAFO. Theorize further along those lines, but RAFO.
Seeing that Vin and Kelsier was able to absorb Preservation's power due to Connection, is it theoretically possible for a duralumin Compounder to compound Connection so much to the point where they could draw in the mists and 'absorb' some of Harmony's power?
RAFO
What's the technological level of Nalthis by the time of Stormlight?
I'm going to RAFO that also.
During Adolin's exploration of Urithiru (right before he murders Sadeas) he comes across a painting
A fanciful picture with animals from mythology. He recognized a few from children's stories, like the enormous mink like creature with the mane of hair that burst out around and behind its head. What was it called again?
Let's answer Adolin's question. Is that a lion. Does this mean that normal animals once inhabited Roshar but became extinct or were forced to adapt after the arrival of Odium or the Highstorms. Or maybe these were artist illustrations from stories brought over to Roshar by worldhoppers? What do you think?
With shardpools being a thing and worldhoppers like Hoid being a thing as well it's entirely possible that people brought stories of the fauna of their world with them when they came to Roshar. After all, we know (via Word of Brandon) that the Horneater lakes are shardpools so they could have knowledge of lions via travelers, seeing them in the pools or some other way (worldsingers?)
Edit-- just noticed you mentioned worldhoppers. I think that's what it is, but it could also be stories from the original inhabitants if (big if) the original inhabitants came from elsewhere in the Cosmere.
Edit again -- They might have gone extinct after the arrival of Odium. If the rest of the world was akin to Shinovar prior to Odium then it's entirely possible for their to have been lions, tigers, and bears (oh my!).
Unless someone asks (or has asked) Brandon then I have no clue.
[Brandon]can you aid us in our questions?
No, it seems like you're asking the right ones.
Can you aid us in getting answers?
I've done so already, by providing two in-depth discussions of the nature of Roshar. They're called The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance.
Can you transfer consciousness via Hemalurgy? Like could you spike someone's ability to--
I'll RAFO that for now. It's a good question.
We know that Hoid has three apprentices. Are all of them human? Is Design one of those apprentices?
Design is not one, and they are not all human. [...] I've almost written a book about one of them multiple times. In fact, one Secret Project started off about one of them. When I was planning one of the Secret Projects to do, there was a plan to attempt to do one of them. That was the kite magic system. And I never got beyond the design stage in that. The kite magic book would have starred one of Hoid's apprentices who is not human.
What's the deal with Hoid and instant noodles?
...He likes his ramen, right? Like any sane person, he likes his instant noodles. Nothing more than that.
...Has he ever had instant noodles?
Yeah, he's had instant noodles before. They have them on Taldain, yeah.
If I took a fabrial to Shadesmar, would it work and what would happen to the spren trapped in it?
RAFO.
Question that I expect to get RAFOed: Does each Shard correspond to a particular Dawnshard? i.e. are there 4 Shards that correspond to the Change Dawnshard (of which I assume Ruin and Cultivation would be 2)?
RAFO, as expected.
Are Legion and Emperor's Soul contained in their own worlds or are they part of the universe of The Stormlight Archive, etc (anywhere with Hoid in it. lol)
The Emperor's Soul is set on Sel, the world of Elantris. It's far off, though, so you have to have your eyes open to catch the clues. Hoid shows up in a deleted scene, and is referenced in the story.
Why are specific focuses chosen for specific Shards? Why metals for Ruin and Preservation and not Commands like Endowment?
RAFO.
So, the Shades on Threnody, they're enforcing the Three Rules. Would something bad happen if they weren't enforcing those rules?
I'm gonna RAFO that. The book on Threnody will not take place in [the Forests of] Hell, it will take place on the continent where the Evil is, but I hope to get into some of the rules for Hell when we're there.
Were Bavadin and Edgli sisters?
RAFO.
Is Adonalsium a kind of godmetal to the 'real Adonalsium being'
RAFO.
About the end of Elantris. When Hoid is speaking with the dark seon? I was wondering, like, what is that relationship there? Is he, like, working with them, or for them?
More alongside each other.
Is that something we're gonna see more of in the future?
Probably.
