Does Earth still exist in Skyward?
RAFO
Since you established that all the worlds you created in your books are linked, any chance to see in the (very) distant future a book/series that delves into this overarching story/universe/rules more directly? Possibly with a crossover of characters from your different stories, specifically characters that became "immortal" or at least achieve a "different" state: Sazed, Kelsier, Raoden. Is that something you would even be interested in doing?
Or will you stick to placing subtle hints in your different books/series about the overall system?
VERY distant future is correct. I will confirm that I do have stories planned that delve into what is going on behind the scenes. There will be short stories dealing with Hoid, most likely posted to my website.
Some of these stories are novel length, and I can't say what I'll do with them. Perhaps I'll write them out in novel form and release them in bookstores, but I have a feeling that most of my readers would be completely confused by them. So perhaps these will all just be on my website only. (If they are released that way, they'll most likely be free for download and reading.)
The subtle hints will continue until then. Mostly, I want the stories to be enjoyable and self-contained. I don't want anyone to HAVE to know any of the behind the scenes, regarding Hoid, Adonalsium, and the rest. (Yes, there is more.) Those are there for the readers who want to dig, and who want to see the greater story. But I don't want them to overshadow the stories of the books themselves. At least not yet.
Is Hoid's restriction on not hurting someone living absolute? Could he cause pain for pleasure situations?
It is not absolute; you've seen at least one loophole. The thing about is, this is Dawnshard-derived, and weird things happen with the Dawnshards.
Could a shadow from Threnody be manifested as a Shardblade?
RAFO.
Why did Rashek leave two beads at the Well?
RAFO
Why does Hoid show up in all your books?
Because all the books are connected, and he's searching for something.
Okay, so he can go on another world?
That is possible.
In Sixth of the Dusk, and where that fits in the timeline, are the visitors from anywhere we've seen before?
You have seen people from that place before.
And if I were to speculate more on which one, you'd say...
Then I would say RAFO.
You suggested Secret History gave the definitive explanation why Vin didn't meet Hoid but many years ago you hinted at something different (that something he does spooked her and she is too observant for her own good). Can you reveal what the original reason you had intended was? (My favorite theories were eerily skillful humming and her picking up very faint pulses from his Investiture usage.)
I went back and forth on this one, honestly. I knew Kelsier would be involved, but one thing I was really worried about with Secret History was undermining Vin's story or her agency. While I liked Ender's Shadow, the closest parallel I knew of to a story like this, I didn't like how it weakened a lot of what Ender accomplished and gave it to Bean instead. (I think I've mentioned this in conjunction with Secret History before.)
So I wanted something to have stopped Vin, regardless of whether or not I ever wrote Kelsier's behind-the-scenes story or not. The official answer in my head is not that it was anything specific, but that the whole package that Hoid was presenting was WRONG to her. Her instincts picked up a dozen subtle cues that he was more dangerous than he seemed, and that made her freeze and assess. And that gave Kelsier the chance to nudge her away.
I wasn't trying to lead people to figure out a specific answer, with those comments. I was trying to hint that something was wrong, and Vin didn't quite know what set her off--because it wasn't one thing, but many. So I don't have a smoking gun, so to speak, of things Hoid was doing to drive her off.
Is Renarin technically Enlightening his visions into precognitive ones?
RAFO.
I asked what would happen if you burned lerasium or atium near ettmetal.
RAFO! :)
Is Hoid somebody I should be rooting for?
Depends on-- Depends... There's a big, uh, "depends" attached to that.
Is that something we're gonna see in Stormlight Archive?
You will see some of it in Stormlight. It's not the main place you're gonna see it.
How does Hoid *inaudible* in Scadrial, Roshar, anywhere else he might be?
Have you read the story Mistborn: Secret History?
No, I have not yet.
Secret History has a big clue.
Peter actually said on the 17th Shard that we should ask you about this, we'll see if I get RAFO'd or not.
Would you share with me how Vasher lost his sword to Nale?
How Vasher...?
Well uh "Zahel".
Oh, oh. *having far too much fun with this*
So how Zahel lost his "sword"...
We're talking about the same thing here. So Nightblood. How did that get in-- how did that transfer over?
I'm not sure why Peter's telling you to ask that, because--
Well he said something about that maybe you could share a little bit about, I don't know...
There will be a lot of information in the book Nightblood about how some of these things came to transpire.
What are the Deepest Ones? ...The quote is "God Beyond protect them if the fighting had drawn one of the Deepest Ones" from Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell.
You will find out if I ever write the next book... the next book set on Threnody.
He asked for "Something juicy about Odium that no one knows about yet."
Odium and Hoid were once friends.
Is something wrong with Roshar's afterlife?
Uh, why do you ask?
Because of the Tranquiline Halls stuff? Needing to reclaim them?
Um. So, I'm... not going to answer anything about Roshar's afterlife.
Will we ever see more beads of lerasium?
That's a RAFO. Definitely a RAFO. It's-- It would require some... *sighs*
Has Hoid ever used Allomancy on Roshar or in The Stormlight Archive.
Yes. On screen he has. I've mentioned times when he's pulled on emotions, or pushed on emotions? I think he... I'd have to look at the scene and see which one he's doing. But he is playing with people's emotions using Allomancy in a very obvious way. There are other places. He doesn't do it a ton. Wit, as you can see in Rhythm of War, considers too extravagant use of the various arts to be cheating to an extent, because it makes things too easy. There are other reasons to not do it, though. He would become visible very quickly to entities to whom he wishes to remain non-visible if he were aggressively using Allomancy. Allomancy is not a very quiet skill.
Were the Heralds born on Roshar?
RAFO.
You've mentioned before that Hoid ends up where he needs to be.
Yes, and usually without knowing why.
Is chromium involved in that?
Yes. Well, he's not necessarily using chromium, but the underlying mechanic, yes.
I'd like to solve the puzzle.
"Unite Them with Passion to Destroy Evil and make Positive Change."
Did I do the thing?
RAFO. :)
About Bands of Mourning... Marasi finds ReLuur's missing spike, and she describes it as pewter... Which is not one of the four metals conventionally used in kandra blessings...
Yes.
...and is used to steal Feruchemical abilities. Was Marasi just mistaken, or is something going on there.
That you will eventually find out.
You once said Nightblood can do some really freaky things when he is fully consuming Investiture, have we seen Nightblood do that yet?
That is a RAFO. But you will find out...
If you took Nightblood into the Cognitive Realm, what would he look like?
RAFO, and yes, he has been taken into the Cognitive Realm before.
More specifically, would he stay a sword or would he give himself a sort of...
That's a RAFO... that's the RAFO. Just make sure when you go through that perpendicularity, he's in a sheath. Otherwise, bad things happen.
There would be a difference, you say?
Yeah, bad things would happen if you took Nightblood through.
Are the stars in the red rip naturally red, were they turned red, or does someone (and I feel like if i mentioned his name this loses all chance of not being RAFO'd) use lightweaving to make them appear so?
RAFO! :)
I asked about the Evil on Threnody.
Yes.
Is it a Splinter?
That's a big RAFO.
Are there any fain or formerly fain holders of a Shard of Adonalsium?
What an excellent question! It's a card, it's a RAFO card.
Is Hoid able to use soulstamps?
Hoid is working on how to figure out how to use soulstamps. As you have seen so far, he has not figured out how to make that work. But he only just barely managed to get access to Selish magic systems. He's working on it.
From Rysn's observations in the epilogue, it seems like she has a lot of the same aspects of a Fifth Heightening/Returned at the least. Is this because her Dawnshard is particularly connected to Endowment or because the effects of a certain level of Investment result in similar effects?
The latter.
Interesting. So are actively Surgebinding Radiants or metal-burning Allomancers just not Invested enough to gain those passive effects, or do they not experience perfect pitch/color/etc. because their Investiture is just not as tightly bound to their Spiritweb as Endowment's Breaths or a Dawnshard would be?
Be aware that the two groups you mention don't generally hold much Investiture themselves, at least not in large quantities over time. More in Surgebinding. Almost none in Allomancy.
But RAFO to specifics.
The Epilogue of Words of Radiance.
Yes.
Hoid makes particular note of a cremling.
Yes.
Dysian?
Hehehehe. You're starting to learn! You're starting to learn.
That epilogue just got so much--
Yes, he was speaking to one of the Sleepless there. He has spotted them and they--
So, he knows.
Oh, he knows!
Because he makes a comment about having “no intelligent audience.”
Yes, yes, yes. *laughter* Of course he doesn’t have an intelligent audience!
When Dalinar and Honor are having a "chat" at the end, Honor says "I don't know who you are, or how you found your way here." Does Dalinar visit the Spiritual Realm in his dreams then?
RAFO. (Sorry.)
Does Hoid have a safety-deposit box somewhere, or does he carry all his souvenirs with him?
He has a home base.
Doesn't Zahel mention that he has 'Lost a Friend' maybe in a worldhop he dropped it, or nightblood has grown in power since landing on roshar and was able to move enough on his own that Zahel didn't notice til it was too late and he had already been identifed by Nalan.
RAFO.
Stormlight production by Bondsmiths. Is this a Dalinar-only thing, or a Bondsmith thing? Has it been used historically? Or am I getting RAFOd?
You're getting RAFOd... I'm gonna RAFO it. You should know the answer to that eventually. But not yet.
Feruchemical aluminum stores and taps a marker that seems to suffuse all Investiture within a person, removing or strengthening Identity. Does Feruchemical duralumin work similarly? Does tapping connection while storing in a metalmind increase the connection of the Investiture stored?
RAFO. Mostly because I've got a main character who's going to be doing this, I'm not going to spoil the fun or lock myself down yet.
I was just wondering--I'm a big Hoid fan--and I was just wondering if he's in this [White Sand Volume 1] and if I will recognize him as Hoid.
He is, yes. So...
And is that how he actually looks, or is that just like...
Nah, that-- it-- he disguises himself a little bit, but in this book he doesn't have to go to magical extremes. So if you is wearing a wig or something it's still kind of how he looks. I don't think we even disguised him at all. We did change it from how he was originally, because he had such a small part. I'm like, people like him more. So we beefed up his part.
Also, I noticed that Dalinar fits well enough with the Hero of Ages prophecy. Lines like "The Hero of Ages was the person who united others, who brought them together" and so on. So I wanted to ask if there is a coincidence or not? Or that's a RAFO?
RAFO.
Is the Old Magic a Shard?
Is the Old Magic a Shard? That's a Read And Find Out.
The last Unmade, the one that's hypothesized to Dai-Gonarthis. It looks suspiciously to me like Cusicesh, because of the feeling of being drained, because it's a large spren-- Is there something to that or is the feeling just because Cusicesh is a large spren?
I'm gonna RAFO.
What would happen if Hoid held Nightblood?
Uh, Hoid would not do that. Hoid would stay very far away.
Not even hold it??
He would stay really far away. There are very few things in the Cosmere that Hoid is afraid of, and Nightblood is one of them.
I thought he'd be afraid of the blade end.
So let's just say if very, very, very few things in the Cosmere had a chance of destroying you, you wouldn't even pick one up. You'd try to be in a different room entirely.
*Whispering about Nightblood being able to destroy Hoid*
I didn't say, I said theoretically. I said "had a chance of", I did not confirm. Hoid doesn't know. But there's a chance, and so he is not going to risk that.
Is Soulcasting more efficient if the item you're Soulcasting resembles the item you're trying to make?
Good, no one's asked me that yet. RAFO.
What happened to Hoid after he met Kelsier at the Well?
He went to figure out Feruchemy. When Vin found him beaten up, it was because he got more involved than he should have.
When you compound copper? What does that do?
That is-- *hands RAFO card* --the first one tonight. The first one I brought. I'm leaving a lot of the compounding questions for me to explore in later books and show you. And part of the reason is because I like the-- I like letting the readers discover new things and saving things back. And partially it's because I do change it as I go. Once in a while I'll write the book and be like, "No, this thing just doesn't work." Or, "Oh this other thing worked way better." So... That's kind of a double RAFO for those reasons.
This is a follow-up on something I asked you in person last year. What is the bronzepulse of atium? They thought that it shares pattern with gold so I guess there would be some resemblance between those patterns? Also, did it Push or Pull, or something else even (like those uniform pulses Ruin's avatar set off)? Cause I can't help but wonder why did they not notice something very odd about it. And, well, what pulse would even atium alloys have?
RAFO
The unknown spike, raysium?
I’m not going to tell you. Good question.
Are we ever going to see the Moon Scepter on screen and what it does?
Yes, you should see the Moon Scepter on screen. What it does is it works as a kind of Rosetta Stone for interpreting some of the magics.
So that's why Hoid wanted it?
That's why Hoid wanted it, yes. He's trying to figure out how to give himself-- To be able to use the magics on Sel, and that's a key that he wanted.
Do you have a favorite character that you've created or one that you've tended to favor over another?
Do I have a favorite character? No, that's again, you know, the thing. I will say Dalinar is my oldest character, followed by Hoid. Those two have been around since I was 15 and so, there is some favoritism for them, perhaps, just in longevity sense.
If Hoid could have picked to join any order of the Knights Radiant, regardless of the Oaths he had to swear, just the powers, would he have picked Lightweaver?
He would have.
Tell me more!
Lightweaving matches him very well, he's quite familiar with it and experienced with it. He's very good at using it and he likes it.
It's the fulfillment of a long, long quest of his to finally get full access to Lightweaving.
Even though he had some sort of Lightweaving?
He did have some sort of, yes. He's a very very happy Hoid.
Is there any particular reason Hoid's hair is white?
Yes, and it will be revealed in the future.
So, Sigzil is Hoid's apprentice.
Sigzil claims that Hoid is his master.
Cool, very cool.
Well, you didn't ask me any questions. You just made a statement.
Is there anything you can tell us about that?
Is Sigzil a worldhopper?
Sigzil is not a worldhopper. Sigzil spent some time with Hoid during one of Hoid's visits.
